    When I worked in telemarketing, I had to call residents of Massachusetts for health insurance purposes and we seriously had an entire training segment on how to pronounce the names and cities.

And unfortunately, those of us who make the calls have no control over who we call, when, why, or how many times. And you'd be surprised at how many people are kind or even purchase something! :)

      Elijah Falconer Despite it being the most historical state, it's never about Massachusetts. It's always all about California or New York; the places where the celebrities, stores, restaurants, hotels, etc. are, which is pretty disappointing. Regardless though, I love this state.

    I live in MA and I didn't realize these names were ridiculous until watching this. It's funny how we normalize our surroundings when we grow up. And NO we do not all have that accent that everyone loves to do. In fact, people from Mass whose families go way back to the pilgrims and puritans (like my grandma) have a weird sort of British-ey sound to their voices...

    Weirdly pronounced cities always get me. My best friend (who's from Kentucky) got SO pissed off at my pronunciation of Louisville-apparently it's pronounced loo-uh-ville. I was like, sure Jan.

      Hannah Z. It's actually closer to "Loo-uh-vul", with emphasis on the "loo". The closer to two syllables, the better.
      Just so you don't get dirty looks if you ever find yourself in the Commonwealth and need to ask for directions.

    I've lived in Mass my whole life. I think it's easier to say Lowell is pronounced: Low-Wool. (Of course the w in low is silent so it will sound like Lo-wool) ) Concord: Con-Curd. Quincy: Quinn-Zee Peabody: Pea-Buddy or Pee-Buddy. Worcester: Wuss-Tah

    They're all English town names, that I'm very familiar with. All except Cochituate, I guess that's Native American? It's interesting to see that modern Massachusetts people (Massachuttians? Massachuttese? The Mass-o-Chusetts???) still pronounce nearly all of them the same way we do. Though Leominster is even more basic in England: "Lem-ster".
    Anyway, nice to see one corner of the U.S. with sensible names; you can keep your Omahahas and your Albukweekways ;-)

      Not at all. At least one of these is a Native American name, the state is named after the Massachusett tribe. Take British Columbia, for example. Most of the place names are of Inuit origin!
