Gotta say Jon; you've become such a better and complete painter over the last year by pushing yourself outside your comfort zone, thus increasing that zone and the ease with which you present to the viewer. Great video!
Holy crap. This must be one of the biggest "trust the process" painting sequences I've seen on all the painting channels I subscribe to. It really came together in the end, but the way it looked during each step.... I would have ripped all my hair during that. I bow to your skill and perseverance! Thank you for your videos and have a Great Christmas!
Dude, you effin' slayed that (grey)! I gotta say, I don't play Warhammer or this video game or half the things you paint on this channel, but I DO watch you because how you explain the concepts of painting minis I think can work with almost any kind of painting project from minis to dioramas to larger sculptural pieces. I think most of the minis I'd like to paint would be for scenes like this little mini-diorama you've created and frankly, you did great with this and your explanation of the approach you chose was spot-on. I learned a ton watching this and that right there is why I watch your channel - because I LEARN from you.
This looks stellar! I have been playing Warframe since 2018, and have well over 2000 hours in it. I started mini painting in 2019, so to see that I can now combine my two favorite things is making me so happy right now! I'm kinda hoping they expand on this and give us npc's, enemies, and our Warframes.
Love the video, thanks Jon! I started 2d painting (or as the square community refers to it, “painting”) sometime in the past 4 years, and it’s a ton of fun. So many of the skills translate (e.g., bush control, color theory, paint control, blending, etc.) so you’re 100% not starting from square one. If anyone is curious, I encourage you push yourself and give it a go. It’ll only improve your miniature painting skills, and you might end up finding something new that you love.
That face is absolutely awesome! I don’t know how much time you spent on it, but the color choices were bold and your ability to make it work is no small feat. I really enjoy your art style and vision. It’s inspiring me to push myself to do more of the same. Great job!!
Holy hell my dude. That looks amazing. You can barely tell that they are separate parts. They look like they all exist on the same 2d surface no matter what angle you help it at. You have helped me so much as a miniature painter, you and your passion for it have inspired me to take up the hobby again after 20+ years. Thank you and keep on slaying the grey.
Your genuine approach to the hobby and the scripts you put together are a constant font of inspiration for me as a mini painter. I wouldn’t have stuck with the hobby for the last four years without you. Happy Holidays to you Jon!
As a young person, I had time and energy in abundance, but no money to buy all the things. As an adult, I have money, but no time or energy. I can buy the things, bot no time or energy to hobby. My quest is to obtain all three at the same time. I am not optimistic.
You are AMAZING! I have been watching your videos for several months now and by far, this project was my absolute favorite. Every part about it is stunning. The backdrop works so well with the mini itself. There is a point at timestamp 16:57 if you pause the video, it looks like the mini and backdrop are book cover art because everything blends so well together. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
Love watching your videos. The perfect mix of skill, humor, and explanation of how you paint. Also, my wife ordered me a Slay the Gray t-shirt as well as your collaboration shirt from Into the AM. Can't wait 'til they get here. Say hi to Darryl for me!
I am SO EXCITED! I don't play Warframe, but my husband does and this will be an amazing way to try to bring him further into the painting world! I already downloaded the STLs and I'm very happy that they come presupported and unsupported because this way I can scale it up as big as it can go on my printer to be BIG display pieces!
The end result is absolutely beautiful. We love how honest you are. You explain your process really clearly. I've gained a lot of confidence within my ability as a minature painter from learning from you. Thank you for everything you do ❤
Liking the result Jon! Especially your experimenation with environmental lighting is working out really well. Would only change one thing: the color of the wood of the plinth messes with the color scheme. Something more neutral like black (or near black) would have helped the overall look IMO.
I'd never even heard of Warframe before this. Putting models from their game out for free is probably some of the best advertising they can do. Watching how you too a simple miniature and created an whole diorama out of it was amazing! It's always fun to see what people can accomplish with their passion. Besides mini painting, I like blacksmithing, because sometimes beating the tar out of a piece of steel with a big hammer is therapeutic in so many ways...
There is a Bob Ross Channel on some smart TVs. It is fantastic as background noise while painting. He has this whole "happy little accidents" that tells you to not worry about making mistakes, and, instead, just own it. Things will look great if you just move on with the whole image.
This works for me. I'd like to see the day that companies allow the user to generate a print file from within the game. Or even give you a side-app you can bring up to open your character files and turn them into printable files. It would be awesome to be able to print all the parts you want for say, "Kerbal Space Program" and make your own personal modular building set.
Great thing about an airbrush is you can create the haze much more easily by going back over what you've painted on that background art to create the haze.
Art is about perception. Paint what YOU see and keep trying. Its like a conversation with paint rather than words; if it doesn't work right the first time, try again doing things a little different. What I like about art is that you're really "allowed" to show the differences whereas in conversation people tend to dislike repetition.
It got me thinking when you said that you painted the background layer too dark/prominent. Wouldn't you be able to airspray a thin layer of the "cloud" to make it look kind of misty again to build up the 3 or even 4 layered depth background feel? Thanks. Love your videos!
Interesting method. I find if my first layer after zenithal with liquitex ink, is too think, it reactivates the white layer and I end up going back to primer.. is this because of the liquitex?
I love all the chromatic variation. It feels intense with such a static pose. I feel if she was given eyebrows and eyeliner that the piece would pop more aesthetically.
I'd be very interested to know ,just because. How many different colour paints you actually use regularly. As i expect its a small number compared to your collection
Well, I'm still playing Civisation 4 and my 6mm armies show it... Oh boy. But what a lovely job and fair does to the company for allowing he print for free. Now back to my star ships............
Nice, surprised more companies don't do this given that they have 3d models and animations rigged to them already. Lovely paint job, especially that 2d bit, incredible!
Amazing work as always Jon. However how old are you? I only ask because of your comment on playing video games since before the original Nintendo entertainment system.
Ninjon, I pledged for your Exemplar Wet Palette and there's no sign of it being shipped out to Europe and they won't reply to my messages. Can you get some answers for your European and UK supporters?
Gotta say Jon; you've become such a better and complete painter over the last year by pushing yourself outside your comfort zone, thus increasing that zone and the ease with which you present to the viewer. Great video!
For someone not comfortable with 2d painting that background looks top notch

*brush control, not bush control…Thats a skill from an entirely different hobby.
That face is absolutely awesome! I don’t know how much time you spent on it, but the color choices were bold and your ability to make it work is no small feat. I really enjoy your art style and vision. It’s inspiring me to push myself to do more of the same. Great job!!

These are great miniatures! I also really enjoyed your base, zenithal, thinner base technique. I am looking forward to giving it a shot.
That background looks awesome! I like how it all came together, including the base, which I had doubts about until you finished it.
As a young person, I had time and energy in abundance, but no money to buy all the things. As an adult, I have money, but no time or energy. I can buy the things, bot no time or energy to hobby.
My quest is to obtain all three at the same time. I am not optimistic.
What's the saying in business? You want something fast, cheap, and good quality. Now pick two. That's best you get. Substitute fast for time.
Just hire young talented painters to do it for you. Adapt Delegate Overcome
Spend your middle years optimizing health, so that when you start to step down into retirement you can achieve all three.
I wasn't sure about the narrowness and height of the base and background when you started, but it really worked when it all came together.
your natural talent is showing again, really good background art
Big fan of using contrast paint as a tool rather than a crutch. Awesome job.
You are AMAZING! I have been watching your videos for several months now and by far, this project was my absolute favorite. Every part about it is stunning. Dude it turned out great! Love your pre-shading method and use it all the time.
I am SO EXCITED! I don't play Warframe, but my husband does and this will be an amazing way to try to bring him further into the painting world! Loved watching this Jon. Well done. Nice to see you expanding out into other mediums as well as minis.
Cool base and background and super nice painting GREAT WORK!
Loving Warframe since day one and that Arachnus guy is a rly cool dude C:
I’ve felt it more and more as I’ve watched your content: you, sir, are an artist 🤘🤘🤘👌👌👌
Well done. You did a fantastic job with the background
Great work! I can't wait to get painting again. I would love to see more developers do this.
The end result is absolutely beautiful.
We love how honest you are. You explain your process really clearly.
I've gained a lot of confidence within my ability as a minature painter from learning from you.
Thank you for everything you do ❤
That came out dope af! Imo that’s almost better than your golden demon entry!!
Bob Ross would have nailed that background with less then 10 brush strokes =D
Liking the result Jon! Especially your experimenation with environmental lighting is working out really well.
Would only change one thing: the color of the wood of the plinth messes with the color scheme. Something more neutral like black (or near black) would have helped the overall look IMO.
Best sponsor ever :D
Played the game already over a thousand hours and still love it ❤
OK of the Warframe content Ive seen around mini painting RUclips this month, yours seems the most on brand; Ninjons play free after all.
I'd never even heard of Warframe before this. Putting models from their game out for free is probably some of the best advertising they can do. That looks stellar brother
Damn, your Nyx Fashionframe is strong.
I watched this waiting for the moment it all went wrong.... which never came. Its a great result!
Yup. Brings a whole new level to the term humble brag! If I'd produced that, I could die happy!
She's a beaut Clark.
Looks great. Little full, lotta sap.
There is a Bob Ross Channel on some smart TVs. It is fantastic as background noise while painting. He has this whole "happy little accidents" that tells you to not worry about making mistakes, and, instead, just own it. Things will look great if you just move on with the whole image.
That's awesome dude. Really cool. I love the backdrop. Where do you guys get all these beautiful plinths from?
Love the diorama you've done. I haven't played Warframe for years, maybe it's time to revisit it.
This works for me. I'd like to see the day that companies allow the user to generate a print file from within the game. Or even give you a side-app you can bring up to open your character files and turn them into printable files. Love me some Warframe, and delighted with your working with them on this!
Great thing about an airbrush is you can create the haze much more easily by going back over what you've painted on that background art to create the haze.
I was thinking the same thing!
Perhaps he'll do this next time
Love this project. You seemed a little shakey on your presentation, it is really cool.
Looks amazing! I have...many hours in Warframe but haven't played in a few years. The 1999 uodate may get me back in though.
Great collab(?)/sponsored video. I totally forgot when Warframe 1999 comes out, so this is a great ad!
I'll surely check out the update!
warframe and ninjon is not a crossover i expected, but as a fan of both i'm here for it
Just remember, you can't restart when you fight the IRL aliens.
8:44 .. makes sure to work the word "slap" in right as he's dropping paint on the cake. I'm on to your games Jon... you "cheeky" devil.
It turned out really great ! I love it !! The combination I've found out I enjoy the most is Minipaiting + WarCraft ^^
... Well That's just chuffin Awesome isn't it... Great Job mate, that was fantastic... Oh and the model looked fantastic.
Good job Jon. 💜🐇👍
Every mini painter youtuber, their grandma and the kitchen sink are now painting and advertising Warframe.

I dunno, man. That free hand work looks pretty good to me.
It got me thinking when you said that you painted the background layer too dark/prominent. Wouldn't you be able to airspray a thin layer of the "cloud" to make it look kind of misty again to build up the 3 or even 4 layered depth background feel? Thanks. Love your videos!
Great video, love the scene and scheme. I'm also downloading the game onto my switch, am interested to see how it is.
Where did you get that amazing plinth with the slot for a backdrop? Love it!
That was really awesome! Well done!
Fabulous work, sir. Bravo.

Whoa super smart of them! I’m actually gonna try warframe now
Glad I seen this I didn't know warframe had miniatures. Excellent job on elanore aka nyx
Look That happy little Eleanor... In a happy little cave...
Dude! That looks brilliant
warframe is goated and now so are you for this collab.. cant wait to hear you talk about this on tup
I love the whole process and the results are damn good 😊
Tbis seems like a very "CraftworldStudio" process, much like your Leagues of Votann guy
Fantastic interpretation and execution.
Ayyyy love Warframe, been playing for almost 10 years. What a perfect crossover of interests 👌
I’d like to know more about this so-called “bayg of tricks”.
Awesome! side note...Mini painting aside, Now I'm curious to see your skills set to purpose at full power on a canvas too
I'd be very interested to know ,just because. How many different colour paints you actually use regularly. As i expect its a small number compared to your collection
Where did you get that plinth?
hell yeah i started painting with bob ross and eventually switched diorama and mini painting.
Well, I'm still playing Civisation 4 and my 6mm armies show it... Oh boy. But what a lovely job and fair does to the company for allowing he print for free. Now back to my star ships............
I've definitely been looking for some warframe mini files.
I think the background looks great!
Nice, surprised more companies don't do this given that they have 3d models and animations rigged to them already. Lovely paint job, especially that 2d bit, incredible!
Looks beautiful!
Would have used a 3D printer and made multiples to layer the background to give a 3D effect usually done for Pokémon card crafts
Looks great Jon. Be kinder to yourself!
Before 1985? How old are you? You look good for someone in their 40's.
In my defence they never asked me if I was colour blind.
Looks Stellar
Where is the plinth from
Looks great!
Dude love the vid but you're a harsh self critic cause that backdrop looks great. Keep it up broski!
I feel the game or paint dichotomy 😂
Do another video about your progress on vizzik!
Amazing work as always Jon. However how old are you? I only ask because of your comment on playing video games since before the original Nintendo entertainment system.
I've been having a really crummy time and your videos brighten my day lol I know that's corny but it's true.
Awesomo Jon 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Channeling Bob Ross with your own eccentric hairstyle??
Non-GW Content!? YES PLEASE
hell yeah, i got them already
Ninjon, I pledged for your Exemplar Wet Palette and there's no sign of it being shipped out to Europe and they won't reply to my messages. Can you get some answers for your European and UK supporters?
Shame that the Warframe 1999 portion is so quest gated behind multiple lengthy quests.
hmm, turned out looking great.
My first game system was the Atari 2600. I was 14. 👾 👾👾
Shiiiiiiiiii..... Looks damn good to me Jon.
I just got robbed at Cycle Gear,l for 500 bucks. So these GW toys and paints are gonna take a break
