How so? Different skill levels. There are black belts & then there’s people like Gordon Ryan, Craig Jones etc. Are those other black belts not black belts or are there different levels even for black belts.. I’ve trained traditional MA (Karate & Taekwondo) & I’ve seen students at the same level training for different lengths of time. That’s how it should be. I could be training for 15 years but only hobbyist (max 3x/week). You could be training 12 years yet as an avid competitor. Those years of “experience” I could have, you gained from competition…
A friend of mine just got his black belt after 16 years. Long overdue. You move, change schools, associations they are going to hold you back and get their money and teach "their way". Some people go twice a week and don't get serious and don't care about belts. Bunch of different paths and reasons
"The GREATEST teacher - FAILURE is" - Yoda. I've seen so many crappy Black Belt tests (from other styles), where crappy performances were rewarded with a Black Belt. I trained in ITF TaeKwonDo from a former ROK marine on a military base - some of the toughest training I've ever had (had studied 2 other arts previously). I poured my HEART and SOUL in my first BB test. Sparred with 3 different Black Belts (3 different times, not all at once) and almost got KO'd twice. Thought I couldn't do any better if I tried - and still FAILED. Congrats to these 3 gentlemen - THIS is how martials arts SHOULD be!!!
Thanks for capturing this and for the kind words. Honored to share the mats with you and everyone else in this video. If you get 1k views over the next day or so it's probably just me watching on repeat 😁
Fantastic weekend and this video captures some of the essence of it, as well as some of what makes Capital MMA such an amazing environment. Awesomeness.
Not showing anything related to the test or even describing the types of things they would be doing (physical endurance, technique, sparing) makes for a lackluster viewing experience.
I appreciate that you took the time to watch this short film and also appreciate the time you took to leave a comment. Every little bit helps the algo. Have a great day, Christopher. 🤙🏽
secret society non-public tests only enhance the building of cults just keep in mind I don't know any of these guys, so I assume they know what they are doing However, transparency is key to innovation
Damn the first guy who has been training for 20 years and was going for the 4th attempt, wow 20 years and no black belt maybe he was training once a week, but that test must be crazy hard.
Search Roy Dean, he shows the crucibles in good detail for all belts and it’s very well filmed 👍 I get good vibes from him in comparison to this place, one guy was being tested for 4th attempt. It’s a business to this place.
Nice :) Good job. Knowing me I would not attempt any kind of a test for not feeling worthy of any promotion and I've been training for many years. I would happily stayed a white belt if not being promoted every couple of years by my coaches ;) Actually I used to know a guy who refused any kind of a promotion and I bet he would still ragdoll me today with his white belt on ;)
Thanks for taking the time to watch my film and also for the kind words. As for the closed door policy, I'm not in a position to speak on behalf of the gym. Doesn't seem like anyone testing had any issues with it though for what it's worth. Thanks again and have a good one! 🤙🏽
The tests are done individually and can take up to an hour. We don’t want those testing later to have an unfair advantage over those testing early. Second, we don’t want people who will be testing in the future to train only for the test (though we will change up the modules over time). Finally, it is a test, not simply a right of passage. So, like most tests I’ve been through, the door closes once the exam begins.
@@CapitalMMAFit thanks for the prompt and courteous reply. There should be few if any surprises in a blue belt test, I honestly cannot see how anyone could gain an advantage by being first or last. Either compare it to a test, or don't. You cannot say it's just like a test, but say it's not a test. The closure of a door in an academic test is for a different reason. No one who walks into an academic test can see the questions or anyone else's answers. Just my thoughts from many decades of grappling, you do what works for you and your members.
@@CapitalMMAFit How do you train those people for so many years and have no clue what their skill level and favorite gameplan is? Do you just not watch or teach them personally? The closed door thing is sketchy AF btw. Nothing you say can make that make sense.
@@micaylapresley Clearly you've made assumptions about our test, and you've disclosed that nothing I can write would make sense to you. This isn't a recital, it's the cumulative test of a decade+ of training. People do fail, and it is unnecessary to invite the public to witness that. However, our requirements are communicated to our candidates, and our candidates are invited because we feel that they are capable of success.
do that. guaranteed bb in 2 years. It's funny when I pass on my way to the gym kids with black belt at taekwondo, meanwhile I've been training bjj for longer time than those kids are alive and I don't feel worthy of a black belt (brown belt from not long ago).
Some of the testers tested more than once - but it was said this was the first BB test in house. Does that mean they attempted at different Capital affiliations?
As an instructor I see my students everyday and I know wether they are black belt level or not. No need for tests

Not necessarily, they may be just hobbyists, took breaks for life or changed locations.
Congrats to the new black belts and great job capturing this! 👏
Thanks Murph!
Interesting. 99% of bjj clubs don’t test and just promote at intructor’s discretion.
yeah even a test is made by someone too... at someone's discretion.
Great video! I love Zach’s statement about pizza and Netflix 🤣
Congratulations to the Black Belts! Fantastic accomplishment ❤️

No cameras were allowed in the testing room because otherwise the secrets to the Oil Check escape might be made public, and we can't have that.
Probably a stupid ass arbitrary test that the proctors couldn’t even pass today
most likely lol
