I like your grasses with the Verbena and Echinacea. Daisylike flowers pair well with grasses. I am zone 4, clayish soil, Germany. I grew Carex 'Irish Green' for some years. After hard frosts it gets brown tips and look not good. Then I cut it down to the ground in spring and it comes back beautiful. In Sun it needs water to look lush. Shade is better suited. it spreads with rhizomes! I had Molinia arundinacea 'Karl Förster' for 3 years and suddenly I have seedlings everywhere. Didn't know this can happen. Calamagrostis 'Karl Förster' is the most easy and well behaved grass for me. you can use it as hedge or to devide a small garden area. Calamagrostis 'Overdam' has white stripes and is the best companion for tulips in april because it is a cold season grass and emerges early. I love Pennisetum 'Cassian'. you need the sun BEHIND these grasses, to see the potential.

Hi Marta. The border is looking beautiful. It's amazing how fast the plants filled in. I like Calamagrostis Karl Foerster grass. I also like the Japanese forest grass, blue fescues, and some carex grasses. I'm in the Seattle area of the United States, Zone 8B. I don't really like the monster grasses that turn into huge clumps that are six feet wide. But that's probably because I don't really have the space for that type of grass.

They are tall and have so much movement with the breeze. The negative about them is they flop with the rain, but usually stand back up as they dry.

The plumes are massive on my Pink Pampas Grass but has never been pink, always white. Mine stands 7 ft in size and can be a beast to divide. It’s otherwise maintenance free and really makes a statement. Tufted Hair Deschampsia cespitosa. These spread too much and I have to pull baby plants. I’ve cut the seed off but then the plant doesn’t look right. Hameln Dwarf Fountain Grass Pennisetum alopecuroides. This is my favorite. It’s reddish-colored plumes that arch above the green fountain of foliage. In fall the foliage turns a lovely golden russet color. USA Zone 5A

Well obviously you know what you’re doing 🤣 I was wondering: does the Verbena bonariensis self seed for you even on mulched areas? Or do you have to remove the mulch completely around the mother plants to have them self seed? Because I’ve noticed some plants manage to self seed even in corse mulch as long as it’s not too thick, but some just need very neat crumbly soil free from any mulch to seed and it’s always a dilemma for me: I want some seeds to germinate but I’m afraid to remove all the mulch and have lots of weeds 😅
Thank you. As to your question about verbena/ I have compost as mulch in every other part of my garden and only experiences there- it self seeds well in sunny position, sandy soil and gravel best. I have best results in my lavender bed that has a lot of sand added to the soil, also is more alkaline as I added dolomite and ashes from the fireplace over the years.

I'm curious to see how you will respond to Sesleria next year. The older the plant got for me, the less I liked it in my beds. I have a question regarding white perennial species. From my experience, white species, such as catnip and liatris, grow much worse or slower and produce fewer flowers. Have you had similar experiences?
Hello Martha. Beautiful border! I do not have ornemental grasses yet but you are encouraging me to try some. I was wondering if you had experienced bad rain storms in your area a few weeks ago? I heard Poland got very bad flooding!
When we bought our home there were seventeen huge clumps, seven feet wide, of various grasses, populated by the rodents who love them. We removed all the clumps and continue to weed out baby clumps that pop up. I can see the beauty of many grasses. I don’t want to live with them and their maintenance. To me, all but a few look like weeds.

Hello Marta USA Zone 6b yes I have and love a miscanthus zebra grass . Outside of it flopping if not staked a bit , I too live the seed plums and leave it through winter for birds and structure. Verbena also a fav just live how it spread itself and so much color. The border will be and is perfect for a timeless look lower maintenance. Interesting how we think of the years coming and our gardening energy ha ha ha. We won’t be young forever???😉💃🏻🤣😳🫣😀. Your information always so interesting and helpful.
