This is great! Been playing guitar since 1974, and every time I go to Hawaii, I am lured into the music/ukelele shops and am so tempted to get a uke. Never felt comfortable with the differences between the styles (and the range of prices!) so always chickened out. Now I have something to base a decision on. I also appreciate the suggestion of going b budget (not to say cheap, though) to see if it's for me. I realized that my first guitar was probably around $100 from a used instrument store, and now I have 6 of them in a whole range of prices. Thanks for the tips. Mahalo! ;-)

I have been told to get a tenor ukelel but I am going to get the soprano first. Then I will graduate upwards. I have played the piano for years and can read music, I played the ukelele when I was young but I do not remember much. I am so looking forward to learning it again.

To me, the act of making music is the most fun that you can have with your clothes on. I really love music and its always the song you wanted when you play it. I am definitely going to buy one. I am curious as to do they have them with the steel strings as well??? Just seems that the sound would be better from steel strings and just too easy to play... a great teaching tool

This was entertaining and informative - just a shame I didn't see this before I bought my first Uke , a Noah ' Super Concert' , which is a concert size body with a tenor neck. Not hugely expensive but not budget either though very good value i.m.o as they are handmade by a family of luthiers in Vietnam that a guy called Matt here in the UK got to know and went into collaboration with. Think mine was around £270. All solid mahogany and bears the serial number No. 6 ! It's a nice Uke but had I seen this before I might have gone for something a bit cheaper as I mainly play guitar ( yes, I do subscribe to your teaching forum and recommend you to others!). Didn't know you played Uke as well but should have guessed you do. They are good fun! That Maton you have is great which is no surprise because they make really good guitars as I'm sure you are aware..

Not sure how you can generalise about all sopranos with a Mahalo as an example. Some of the fullest sounding ukuleles I have ever played are sopranos and not hyper prices either. It's just a different sound, but not not 'lesser'. Oh, and ukes don't lose tune with friction pegs if they are set properly.

I love ukulele, I started as a drummer at the age of 8. Then my wife brought me an acoustic guitar for Christmas when I was 33 years old because she couldn't think of anything else to get me even though I was always happy in bands playing drums in the bad. Anyway I learnt to play guitar and have a few now.
Then on my 52 birthday my grown up sons brought me an good ukulele. At the time I was a band tour bus driver and on tour with Rod Stewart, so took the ukulele with me to learn to play while on tour for 9 weeks in UK and Europe. I asked one of the band members if they could show me some stuff on it which she did. This was 8 years ago now and just had my 60th birthday and take the ukulele whenever I go away. Brilliant channel by the way Justin 👍

Thank goodness I found this channel. I've been searching for information about what type Ukulele would be best for me and most videos I found here on RUclips, confused me more than they helped me in my decision making, this one here seems to do the trick :-) . I'm a total beginner, it would be my first musical instrument (that's if you count out Maracas, Radio and HiFi) and I'm in my late 50s, which limits the list of musical instrument I can realistically learn without too much frustration. So it's a Concert Ukulele I want. Now I've narrowed it down to the type and half the battle is won. Thank you :-)

I have an Enya X1 tenor ukulele. It is OK and does the job. It doesn't go out of tune too much, and the sound is decent, but I have to say the volume is a bit muted and the sound is not very bright. I've been playing for about a year and a half now, and have come across quite a few ukes that sound better for not much more $$$ at all. If you're in the market for a new uke, Enya is not bad, but you should note that Enya ukuleles are on a MASSIVE marketing campaign all over the internet and pay so many ukulele RUclipsrs to promote their products. So, take what people say about Enya ukes with a pinch of salt.

I like Ukeleles, please don't get me wrong, I'm happy for anyone with £850.00 who can afford to buy a Uke with that money.
I see them, however, as a bit of fun - and as something that you wouldn't cry over if someone accidentally sat on it.
I do get that some people might be professional musicians and make a living out of playing it - and good luck to you if that's the case.
But a Uke that sounds 35 times better than another Uke... It's still a Uke.
In my narrow-minded, limited view, cash strapped universe, it'd be ridiculous to spend that kind of money on a Uke.

Hi! Can you recommend a uke around $150-200 that doesn’t have a blunt edge? I am a beginner with a concert sized uke, and the uke I have is literally digging into my right forearm while strumming causing painful marks/bruises. I’ve experimented with various positioning, but I’ve concluded that it’s not the positioning that’s my problem, but the instrument’s design and the blunt edge where the side meets the top - no matter how I position, my forearm hits a corner one way or another. I am thinking that something with a more rounded edge would resolve the issue. Can you recommend some options? I’d really like a concert size, preferably an acoustic-electric. Thanks in advance!

I think you'll find uke's with "contour edges" and arm rest in a slightly higher price range >$250 like the Ortga's etc. | LievenDV | JustinGuitar Official Guide

This is so great!! Thank you. My niece had one that she just beat around on much like you’ve described your daughter. And I looked up the tuning, tuned it up. Looked up a couple chords.. and boy oh boy is it fun
