I love this game so fuckin much. Seriously it's incredibly sad that it didn't take off. I hope over the years people will finally start to play it. Unfortunately I don't think we'll get the planned sequel because the game sold really poorly. I played it immediately on launch so I didn't have the luxury of a guide for anything even tho I really wished I did. I had to pull out a pen and paper which I haven't had to do since I was younger playing games like myst. It was such a magical experience playing this game. Yes some parts were a little frustrating but I loved it anyway. Excellent video btw, thanks for trying to get the word out
Exactly how I feel. What a hidden gem. It's insane how long and immersive the game is (easily 30-40+ hours). It's not perfect, but given the team size and the game's scope they did an unbelievable job. It's such a shame this game didn't see more success. Sadly, given the sales and the time it took this game to be made, I can't imagine them putting out another game like this :(
The game has seen gradual success since it's release and I think the devs have at least broke even now. I actually emailed the devs to ask about some stuff and offhandedly mentioned the low sales. Quell's reply was: "Since the blog post, the game's performance has been better. It was slow but steady. And one year out now, I can say it was worth the journey to create. We're not currently working on Phoenotopia 2, but this game universe holds a fond spot to me, so it is something I hope to return to one day when the circumstances are right." No Cap Gaming also made a video on 15 Underrated Indie Games, one of them being Phoenotopia: Awakening which now sits at just over half a million views so that probably gave them a nice boost in sales. So Phoenotopia 2 isn't 100% a given but the devs seem to have seen more success and Quell does want to return to it one day. I read on a Japanese site where they did an interview that they're working on an unrelated Metroidvania which they're hoping to announce next year: flyhightimes.jp/entry/2022/06/19/120000 I do hope we get Phoenotopia 2 one day though. Awakening is my favourite game of all time.
@@Erik-gp3il Thanks for the response! I'm glad it's starting to do better. Hopefully it will keep spreading and more people get to play this. I'm glad they at least broke even. I'm exciting to play whatever they make next, but my heart really wants a sequel some dsy
Phoenotopia: Awakening is definitely one of the greatest Metroidvanias of all time! I finally beat this game after a hundred hours or so, and I can't believe it's not on every greatest indi of the year list!
"A world you're gonna get attached to." Yeah, so attached in fact I planned out an ambitious novel greatly inspired by this game and its amazing world. Seriously, it opens up slow but I fell in love with this game. It was indeed slow burn. That aside, nice review! Subbed :)
I had the same experience, the game was enjoyable but not amazing at first. I don't know when that changed, but the more I played the harder it was to put down. Now, 50 hours and 100% later, it's easily in my top 3 games of all time.
Just saw this. Actually, I only played until later into the desert region myself. Got frustrated by the story forgetting to mention the big dilemma to others. (Terrible event X has happened! Go out and find help! ... *Find people and then a town... but don't say anything? Okay...? Then meet someone formerly from the village... And don't mention this event to them either...? Felt less like I was going out on urgent business seeking help, and instead just going off and doing whatever. Like fishing or solving all the worlds problems. And returning back to the first town showed no change in time at all...) Which is fine, but I found myself less interested in return. All that said, still a lovely game. I probably should give it another shot.
In retrospect it is pretty strange how the abduction takes a backseat storywise in comparison to how much you learn about the kingdom's history and lore. I think to enjoy the game fully you need to be able to suspend your disbelief a little bit, haha. Definitely worth a second try if you enjoy the gameplay though!
I feel like the main turn off of the game is the keyboard controls, I wouldn't have loved this game if it wasn't from plugging my shittiest ps2 controller 5 hours in. The game isn't optimized, actually wasn't in mind at all for keyboard controls, I mean look at fishing, but still, anything else about this game, is just beautiful, the difficulty is debatable, but skill issue

I'm at the last boss (not the secret last boss) clocking in at 96 hours. I've not found or done everything.

Thanks! I think the game's general plotline would be a great basis for a book or tv series. Good luck with your novel!
