Brilliant. Thanks Ollie. Much appreciated. Good to be able to see so much of the stuff we haven't been able to access too. See a lot of it on a daily basic but SO sad to see My beloved city with her knickers still round her ankles almost 3 years on. :(
Hi Ollie It's great to see that Holden clearly appreciate and value being associated with Eye in the Sky Christchurch Aerial Photography. Certainly a big vote of thanks to the Press & TV3 for their coverage. David Lynch - Momentus Public Relations Ltd
Nice shots Ollie, the DJI Phantom is a great machine. I have recently purchased one too. Still learning to fly it. Cant wait for my Fatsharks to arrive. All the best!
Thanks mate :) I used a remote control quadcopter with a GoPro hero 3 black edition and video goggles. As for the song it is Tidal Wave by Sub Focus. Cheers.
Hi Ollie, Excellent coverage in today’s Press: “Mini-chopper films city from above” and great to see you have received 14,350 views, which is up by almost 10,000 since today’s Press. David Lynch - Momentus Public Relations
A very different view than from the ground. Thanks for the video, always good to see what's happening. An idea might be a video every couple of weeks/months and then at the end it would be cool to see how the progress came along. P.S. I really liked the music! :p
Yea for sure, i'll try get some footage there over the next couple of weeks, not sure how well it will turn out as the buildings are usually allot smaller but will check it out :)
I'm glad you enjoyed it :) As for the swimming pool type things, if you are meaning what I think you are they are not any type of new development. Those are the basements of the buildings that have been taken down, the video was taken a day after some very heavy rain so the basements have filled up with the water. Cheers :)
Hey mate, no extra transmitters, I upgraded from the original radio to a Futaba T8J and the receiver has diversity antennas so I believe that gives me a little extra range but the stock radio for the Phantom can get at least 1km line of sight. I attached the fpv transmitter using double sided tape and its taking the video output from the gopro. Since this video I now have a Tarot T-2D brushless gimbal, am very happy with the footage I get from it. Thanks.
Thank you for posting that. We left Chch nearly a year ago for an extended "quake break" and it really good to finally get a clearer idea of the state of things now. Some really massive changes; far more cleared areas and some new buildings. Still a long way to go, but great to see progress. The arches are pretty cool. What's the new water feature in the middle of town? Looks like a massive swimming pool but they're building something overtop of it?
Just the clear the air, 3news stated that the video was illegal when CAA rules state that as long as its not for commercial use that it is fine and this video was made purely as a hobby. I have applied for my licence with the CAA to allow me to start charging for photography. Thanks everyone for the support! :)
hey man i just got a phantom, you don't use any alt range boosters just the stock transmitter? also how did you attach your video transmitter to the quad? are you using vid feed out from the gopro for fpv? or a seperate camera? any other upgrades you've done?
Great video, Ollie. What Fatshark setup do you use? I just bought the Zenmuse gimbal for my Phantom, now waiting for it to arrive. Next step is FPV! :D
Thanks mate. I use the 250mw transmitter with the predator v2 goggles. Would love a Zenmuse but a bit out of my budget and i'm afraid the battery life would plummet haha
I'll see about doing a setup video in the future but its basically a quadcopter with a gopro and a live video downlink to some video goggles. Any multicopters can be called drones, just depends on who you ask. I tend to call them multicopters as I believe the word "drone" is seen in a negative context. Thanks :)
A really interesting perspective...you might have thought the authorities would have released similar footage in order to document the changes happening in Chch! Were your required to seek permission to film / fly or were they happy for you to explore?
I didn't seek permission for anything I did, the workers were usually the only ones there and they were just curious as to what it was and how it worked. No one guarding any fences seemed concerned so was pretty much free to roam. Thanks :)
Great work Ollie ! Wonder why the feds couldnt do that over the last few years. Its getting pretty hard to figure out wheres what. Man they got a bit grumpy with you on the news, keep up the good work
Olive made the news tonight... Apparently you now need to be sitting on half a tonne of paperwork to fly these. Thanks for the birds eye view Ollie. Im sure you wouldn't have tackled this without putting in plenty of flying hours.
I think you mean "heard"? Guess you haven't seen any of my newer videos, this was filmed 1.5 years ago, before gimbals were as readily available, but thanks for your input.
Good concept, but if you're using this to promoting a business you should really invest in a gimbal to steady the footage or at least shot in 2K then stabilise in post.
That's really nice to hear, you weren't doing anything that should have needed permission, nice to see common sense prevailed! Perhaps you could head out to the residential red zone next?
Great footage but slow down with the quick cuts - very distracting for those of us over thirty! I disagree with Harryharrypusspuss; Chch is what it is. We can't pretend it's normal. Thanks for sharing.
i hate how people are getting all negitive about this, he hasn't hurt anyone, imagine how useful these would be if another earthquake happened and people where trapped in buildings, this shit is the future.
Ollie, - you have some great footage but I think you're pushing the boundaries and potentially making it harder for others who're wanting to do the right thing with the sanction of the CAA. I'd like to do the same as a you as a hobbyist with my new DJI S800. Please be responsbile and do the CAA tests rather than take the 'Team Black Sheep" approach.
Can't believe they called this illegal. Typical NZ reporting not doing the research. It's not. If it was a commercial operation it would be. The end. By the way cool stuff.
EVERYONE around the world knows there were bad quakes down here whats wrong with showing the great progress that hard working people of Chch achieved? Not to mention that for people who has never experienced quakes is really powerfull to see what nature can do. Such a video will be unique couple years later.
Great video. -I want a quad copter now!! ;-) One comment; in your description write out your URL: h t t p : / / instead of w w w. That will make it clickable, and will be more likely to result in clicks :-) (I put spaces in there just so I could post this comment)
I wish they would pull the church down as christchurch can not afford it. would be really great if you could also some of the other places that have been damaged like avonside and all the houses gone. Christchurch is not about a church its about getting the homeless homes that they can live in unless you want to make the church for them but like that would ever happen. Plus the church has more money than a bull can ???? so why do the tax payers have to pay for it in the first place.
Nice video, unfortunately the type of information you supply on your web site regarding not needing a second person and the way you fly over people either not knowing or ignoring what could happen make you at the very lest, reckless. You say you are CAA approved. It is my understanding that all of these approvals have been withdrawn yet you still display it. Flying FPV, a spotter is a basic safety prerequisite. How else are you going to see another aircraft in your flying area. You fly an aircraft with no built in redundancy, if a propeller breaks or an ESC or motor fails in flight, that thing is coming down at an uncontrolled rate yet you happily fly over people unaware or ignorant of the dangers. Surely a hexcopter should be a minimum for this type of flight. At least then if a failure occurs the flight control system can still help to bring the aircraft down in a controlled fashion. New rules and regulations are being discussed at present and you as a "professional" should be setting a better example. Not putting up video and statements that shows the authorities why this area needs to be more regulated. Just my rant for what it's worth.
When applying for CAA approval I wrote my own 19 page operations manual that covered all aspects of safety, from pre flight checks to having a supervisor when flying. When the UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) specialist from CAA came to Christchurch to view my flights before issuing approval he did not express any concern about it only being a quadcopter only that the required maintenance and pre flight check would be carried out. I understand that the approval is now not required but have not updated my site. When talking to the UAS specialist I inquired about flying over people and when to draw the line as part 101 states that you cannot fly over "congested areas" he said for the most part it is fine and by congested he gave examples of concerts or large events. I understand your concern but trust me when I say that I have done countless hours of research into all of these matters and always try and ensure safe operations.
Congratulations and thanks for sharing. Just saw the interview of you and the video on TV 3 news. Look forward to other videos you share with us all.
Utterly awesome perspective footage. Well done you.
Brilliant. Thanks Ollie. Much appreciated. Good to be able to see so much of the stuff we haven't been able to access too. See a lot of it on a daily basic but SO sad to see My beloved city with her knickers still round her ankles almost 3 years on. :(
I LOVE THIS CITY!!! So much fun and so much beauty. It will be even better when they finish fixing it all up!
I totally agree. Christchurch is awesome
After 3 years in Brisbane, I can honestly say a broken Christchurch is still better :)

A droners paradise … but for all the wrong reasons.
What is the building at 2:25 with the white ‘umbrella’ thing concealed inside the higher bit?
Thanks mate :) I used a remote control quadcopter with a GoPro hero 3 black edition and video goggles. As for the song it is Tidal Wave by Sub Focus. Cheers.

Great!! Thanx for sharing. Did we really need the music though?
Thanks for the info. Keep up the awesome work!

The licence does exist, its for use of UAS aircraft and applies to commercial uses or quadcopter and other remote controlled aerial crafts.
Thanks David, thanks for all your help :)
Awesome vidoe going to put his on my faceboook. Love the song, who sing it please?
Would love to see the setup. I see multiple copters covering live paintball games. Or is that too drone?

Just Wow!!!!!! - AMAZING Look at the current Christchurch
Thanks!

Great vid mate, thanks for taking the time to do it. The music is an awesome choice, goes well with the vid. Who is the track by?
hey man i just got a phantom, you don't use any alt range boosters just the stock transmitter? also how did you attach your video transmitter to the quad? are you using vid feed out from the gopro for fpv? or a seperate camera? any other upgrades you've done?
Thanks mate, they are very handy for footage that you cant get any other way! Thanks for the tip.
Love the video! What is the music track?
Hi Ollie.I finally got one of these birds from I drone in ozzie.Just wondering if anyone local sells the fatshark fpv system.
Mike Timaru.
Wow, Ollie, great footage. Horrid to see such a great city arseholed.
This is excellent!! Cheers : )
Awesome stuff Ollie!
Hell I love this song! Keep watching this video because of it! Good choice lol
Great video, Ollie. What Fatshark setup do you use? I just bought the Zenmuse gimbal for my Phantom, now waiting for it to arrive. Next step is FPV! :D
Nice video and music. Dnb!! See you soon Chrischurch!
I highly doubt it, alot of websites don't have the kit in stock internationally so its just a matter of finding one that does.
Thanks mate. I use the 250mw transmitter with the predator v2 goggles. Would love a Zenmuse but a bit out of my budget and i'm afraid the battery life would plummet haha
Nice video :D What was used to film these amazing shots? I also really liked the song :) What was it called?
Great video though, you use a DJI NAZA do you not?
That sounds cool Dave! Hopefully we can organize something in September.
I'll see about doing a setup video in the future but its basically a quadcopter with a gopro and a live video downlink to some video goggles. Any multicopters can be called drones, just depends on who you ask. I tend to call them multicopters as I believe the word "drone" is seen in a negative context. Thanks :)

props dude, sick vids
Great video!
Holy crap! GREAT movie.
fantastic video, keep it up.
Thanks mate! and yes i use the NAZA M with gps, works great.
Absolutely, will see what i can do.
I didn't seek permission for anything I did, the workers were usually the only ones there and they were just curious as to what it was and how it worked. No one guarding any fences seemed concerned so was pretty much free to roam. Thanks :)
Thanks mate, I appreciate it! Might have to take you up on your offer when you are back :)
CAA, Part 19 defines a pilotless aircraft as “an aircraft, other than a balloon or kite, designed to fly unmanned with a gross mass greater than 25kg.
Should have included some of the footage around our flat :D
Cheers for the support mate :)
That might be a bit dangerous as there are cables that cover the entrance ways that propellers wouldn't enjoy hitting haha
Damn, bet me to it.
I've been collating film on my tri over the past week for something like this ):
Great work Ollie ! Wonder why the feds couldnt do that over the last few years. Its getting pretty hard to figure out wheres what. Man they got a bit grumpy with you on the news, keep up the good work
Very cool

Herd of a Gimbal?
I think you mean "heard"? Guess you haven't seen any of my newer videos, this was filmed 1.5 years ago, before gimbals were as readily available, but thanks for your input.
Ollie Wall The ones where you are breaking CAA laws by flying drone right beside the airport, yeah I have seen them.
wow useless troll.
TheCommanderNZ I know right my DJI Phantom 4 pro and Dji Phantom 3 Advanced have one
Very good video
Thanks
R.I.P Christchurch :(
well done
Good concept, but if you're using this to promoting a business you should really invest in a gimbal to steady the footage or at least shot in 2K then stabilise in post.
YEAH COOL, A REAL CHCH SOUNDTRACK TOO RIGHT?
Very good but heartbreaking
That's really nice to hear, you weren't doing anything that should have needed permission, nice to see common sense prevailed!

great vid Ollie...fark the old fart from civil aviation.......maybe a new vid of planes taking off at CHCH airport is what we need lol

This video has oddly uplifting music. Its almost as if this videos target audience is for people who hated christchurch with a burning emotion.
nek minnit

can i just say in all my years of flying quadcopters, which is none, i have learnt nothing. nice video btw
Man that music is annoying!
Awesome video!
