Nice review Mister Heaton of a great album. I agree with you about this cover. I like both but this one is classic. The Stones really could do no wrong from Beggars to Let Bleed, to Sticky Fingers. To think you had these three albums from the Stones and The White Album, Abbey Road, and Let it Be from the Beatles all released within 2-3 years. Just an incredible time in music. Although Exile is seen as their masterpiece, personally I'll take this album, or Let it Bleed, any day over Exile. About Brian Jones contribution, he was sadly coming to an end. He was there erratically for the sessions. Still, he did play that great slide guitar on "No Expectations". That's enough for me. Anyway, another enjoyable review.
I like both album covers.I think Salt of the Earth is very underrated, when I bought mine around 88 I actually was disappointed to find out Jumping Jack Flash wasnt on it!
John Lennon used to say that the Stones used to emulate the Beatles, and as you pointed out, the sleeve looks like the "white album" Anyway, "Beggars Banquet" is a great album. The Stones got their act together in the late 60`s and early 70`s. That`s like their golden period, although i love "Satisfaction" and the "Aftermath" album.
John Lennon was wrong..I'm a fan of both ..but I prefer The Stones every day ..especially with Mick Taylor..on the CD now..they have the graffited toilet wall..
Hi John... another great review... love your background settings for your video's.....going on your review I will be checking out this album... hope to find one like yours... cheers ... Alan.
Great review john. I like this album. Growing up in the 60s "Aftermath" and "Between the Buttons" we're more my speed. Still this one was great, but never could understand why they didn't put "Jumpin Jack Flash" on here. Another thing that pissed john off was the stones doing "connections". John said it was the stones doing "Doctor Robert"
good review john, big stones fan myself i rate beggars banquet up there with the stones best, love factory girl, salt of the earth, stray cat blues and the brilliant no exceptions which Brian Jones guitar work is second to none, even mick jagger sometime later said it was top draw, just on Brian for moment, Brian ,added mellotron, sitar, tambura acoustic guitar and backing vocals on this album, h e played a active part, also played on you can,t always get what you want on the rock n roll circus, later in 1968,although not on beggars but thought i would mention it, just felt Brian s work needed to be noted. a fine album by the stones picked my copy up in Valencia some years back the white Rvsp. shelve also have the graffiti one also i agree the white shelve is much better. Making my way through your stones reviews at the moment loved the Beatles stuff you have done.
I just read that the Stones are releasing a deluxe edition of their "Rock and Roll Circus" Jun 7 (US) and Jun 28 (UK). It will be 28 songs on 2 CDs or 3 LPs. I'm most interested in hearing The Dirty Mac version of 'Revolution' although I think if it was any good we'd have heard it before now. There are a couple of clips on You Tube about the release, curious to know what you think. For me The Who's performance dominates the sessions, I'd love to hear you review their albums.
Hello John, I am a music aficionado and a huge fan of great music. I am enjoying the Stones in Mono box set. I absolutely adore your interpretation and review of this album. Your reviews are the epitome of class as you seem to be as a person. Very well done. Your details of the musicianship, writing credits and art work... and the history involved with the timing of this release. Loved your reviews of Fleetwood Mac albums as well. Great. Keep them coming Sincerely, Tino
Thank you John. As usual, I am enjoying the enthusiasm you bring to music. I believe that the Stones could never rival the Beatles' staggering qualities. However, I have enjoyed themusic Stones have provided us. Addressing this particular review of the BB album, sadly the only songs with original & creative tunes are SF MAN & SF the DEVIL. The rest are simply exercises in arpeggios & rehashing traditional blues tunes, done tastefully & in accoustic style. The White album's "fillers", if they can be called that are all creative & fresh melodies. BB rather presents as two great songs waiting for an album to carry them. It doesn't. The Stones had great songs, but too many "fillers". Keith must have hurt as a result. Probably why he keeps comparing The Stones to the Beatles. Sad that he dies that. He doesn't have to. He can hold himself high with what he's delivered. But with BB I believe he didn't. Thanks again John.
Hi John great review, I also prefer the white cover. I think they should re-issue it. I have the Decca stereo version, practically the same as yours except the label. Most of the guitar stuff is Keith as you say, Brian's stamp is the slide work on No Expectations and he also plays melatron and harp on a few. Sitar on SFM..
Both the White Album and Beggars Banquet were released in the U.K. on the same day, November 22, 1968. The Stones announced in early November that the album was finally coming out after months of holding out over the album cover artwork and that the new cover was going to look like an invitation - and that was before the White album was released. The fact that the album covers were white was a coincidence and nothing more. If the Stones were to have had it their way, like you mentioned, it would have been the 'bathroom' wall cover - which was nothing like anything the Beatles had done.
Robert Weingartner Beggar’s Banquet came into this world on 6 December 1968. As you correctly state The Beatles (aka The White Album) came out on 22 November 1968.
FYI When the original, ie the one you have here, was released, it was discovered that the speed of the master was wrong. This was repeated on the early cd releases. It wasn't fixed until the remastered cd with the toilet cover.
My biggest disappointment with "Beggars" is that the Stones didn't include "Jumpin Jack Flash".....the greatest rock record ever made.....on the album. "Street Fighting Man" is fabulous as are several other tracks. What an improvement over the hideous "Satanics" mess of an album. The first of their classic 4 in a row run of terrific albums. It's not my favorite (that's reserved for Sticky Fingers) but it's an album of what the Stones did best....a mixture of dirty rock, blues and a touch of country. Good stuff. AND ANOTHER GREAT REVIEW!!! 👍
Never actually listened to this album. Except symphaty for the devil wich is a favorite mine. So nice to know what songs to give a listen now after this video. Thanks
I'm more into the swinging London psychedelic pop era stones but I like some tracks like the folkie Factory Girl and the Low Fi Parachute Woman (I guess parts of parachute woman use a cassette recording like Street Fighting Man)
I agree. The cover is elegant, a fine invitation to a great party. The picture is great, La gran bouffe.. The LP was their first big one, they found their way and sound, Let it be, Sticky Fingers, Exile, Goat's, It's only R&R.. The best years... The Beatles were becaming decadent, studio band, good songs and say goodbye... Salth of the heart and No expectations, parachute woman, three great hiding songs... Sympathy and Street fighting are the obvious songs of the album
From what I have read it was delayed several months due to fight over cover(I also prefer white cover) so the copying of white albums was a case of unfortunate happenstance. Their is a great storyJagger about to and thro with Decca in that Decca said cover was in poor taste, Jagger pointed out the cover for A-tom-ic Jones sleeve as poor taste.
Being from the US the white album cover is the one I purchased as a teenager. I never thought it was a great cover, but I don't think the toilet cover was either. I like the music way better than the cover, this used to be my favorite Stones album, but now I can't say I like it any better than Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile or even Some Girls which might not be thought of as highly but is a personal favorite of mine. And at the beginning I thought you were to say you preferred this to the Beatles White Album but then you said you preferred it to the Toilet cover. I was worried for a second. Cheers.
One could make a case that "Beggars Banquet" is their greatest album, although in my own personal ranking I would rate it as my second or third favorite.. I grew up with the white cover, and was glad to hear that you also feel the same way about preferring it over the graffiti cover - I always felt that maybe I was a prude, but that being said, when I was a younger guy I always enjoyed the risqué humor of "Parachute Woman", lol.... Maybe it's because I'm American, but I never had trouble understanding Jagger's affected blues voice on "Prodigal Son" - great song! - Glad you reviewed this one John, I think that it might be a bit overlooked in the VC generally, perhaps..nice video..
Hi John. Do you, like Keith, have a second home in England then? Nice review of a great album. I recently picked up the reissue with the toilet cover. I love that picture actually. What you said about Mick and the protest movement was very interesting...I suppose looked at it that way, Street Fighting Man is the song that marked his permanent retreat from trying to be a figure of political relevance....which ultimately lead to him becoming the somewhat carnivalesque figure we know today! Btw, the Keith guitar solo on SFTD is one of my favourite guitar moments in rock history. Bye for now.
James Griffiths ha! I wish! No this one was shot in my patents' garden! I think yes this was almost the last gasp politically although gimme shelter was to come of course! Cheers James
I think the white version of the cover was imposed on them by the label and it's not bad but it doesn't suit the feel of the album and it wasn't what the stones had intended.
For me, song for song, the most consistent Stones album. It is absolutely flawless, in my opinion. I wouldn't have changed a note. I think it is the band's favourite too, or at least some of the members, including Mick Taylor, who had yet to join.
Harrison Clark 75 berwick st ...phone 0207 734 3297 ....it was second hand do not at all sure if they would have one now or if they ship stuff....you can always ask!
Brilliant Album as you say John in reference to Brian Jones No Expectations stunning slide guitar a real treat as his contribution to the sessions were almost non exsitent due his life style what a shame and a waste of such a great talent
Songs on it ranked worst to best (IMO): 10: Prodigal Son 9: Factory Girl 8: Dear Doctor 7: Salt Of The Earth 6: Parachute Woman 5: Jigsaw Puzzle 4: Stray Cat Blues 3: No Expectations 2: Street Fighting Man 1: Sympathy For The Devil
John Heaton Hi John, Brian played the acoustic guitar buried in the mix which you can just about hear on the first verse of Sympathy. He also played Harp/Harmonica on Dear Doctor, Prodigal Son and I believe Parachute Woman as it is more his style of playing than Mick’s. The Tamboura and Sitar On Street Fighting Man and Mellotron on Jigsaw Puzzle and Stray Cat Blues. He does play the beautiful Slide on No Expectations but all the other slide parts were played by Keith. The only songs he does not appear on are Factory Girl and Salt Of The Earth. Thanks for an interesting review of this great album.
Brian played on several tracks acoustic guitar on Sympathy and Parchute Woman. Brilliant slide guitar on No expectations..Sitar on Street fighting Man..Meletron on Jig Saw Puzzle and Stray Cat Blues and I believe harmonica on Dear Doctor and Prodigal Son as well as Parachute Woman.Overall the album is outstanding.
A good album, but no expectations and jigsaw puzzle, are hardly great songs, side 2 is superb though, stray cat blues especially. For those who want to compare this to the White album by The Beatles, its no contest......The White album dwarfs it!

TheRagBag yes salt of the earth is overlooked although it goes on a minute too long perhaps
Great video John. Loved the info on Street Fighting Man. Enjoy London.
John Lennon used to say that the Stones used to emulate the Beatles, and as you pointed out, the sleeve looks like the "white album" Anyway, "Beggars Banquet" is a great album. Yellyman Gonzales agree! Thanks
John Lennon was wrong..I'm a fan of both ..but I prefer The Stones every day ..especially with Mick Taylor..on the CD now..they have the graffited toilet wall..
John Lennon was an admittedly super insecure freak show of an individual and talking shit about others endlessly was one frequent byproduct of that.
Beggars Banquet - Ten times better than the Beatles White Album ! Thank you for the review. I enjoyed reading the comments too.
I also prefer the white cover. Much more classy in my opinion. Jigsaw Puzzle is an amazing tune!!
Hi John... another great review... love your background settings for your video's.....going on your review I will be checking out this album... hope to find one like yours... cheers ... Alan.
alan edwards thanks Alan..hope you find a good copy!
Great review john. I like this album. Growing up in the 60s "Aftermath" and "Between the Buttons" we're more my speed. Still this one was great, but never could understand why they didn't put "Jumpin Jack Flash" on here. Another thing that pissed john off was the stones doing "connections". John said it was the stones doing "Doctor Robert"
day tripper thanks Kregg...interesting about Connection see the similarity but what the hell! Cheers
Stray Cat Blues is my favourite here, but as someone else said I prefer their Swinging London period from Aftermath to Satanic Majesties
My favorite album stones
Parachute woman (brian harmonica) jigsaw puzzle (brian melletron)
No expectations (brian slide guitar )

Jensibird 64 worth checking out for sure...I would recommend the full album as it flows well....cheers
Enjoy it is essential .... give it some time too it needs repeated plays to sink in.
Fantastic album. Agree, the US cover is better.
Vinyl Richie thanks I think the cover the same worldwide on initial release...cheers
Love your reviews. Starting to do some
Myself. What kind of camera do you use ? Thanks for the great videos
Irishfan007 hi there...thanks....I am using the camera on my I phone
My favourite Stones album and coincidentally my 1st review on my music channel
I'm more into the swinging London psychedelic pop era stones but I like some tracks like the folkie Factory Girl and the Low Fi Parachute Woman (I guess parts of parachute woman use a cassette recording like Street Fighting Man)

The start of the classic period, ending with Exile 4 years later.
I really want an original copy of the album.

Ron Brown ha ha! Don't worry I would never say that although I this period saw bands peaking at the same time I will say that!
LOL. And I'm only half joking, I love the Stones also and their best work is on par with the Beatles... Almost.
Hi John . I totally agree with you about this lp !!! that's y I don't have it . Is the cd the same ? but good video .
Beatle Brad hi Brad yes the cd has the graffiti cover
One could make a case that "Beggars Banquet" is their greatest album, although in my own personal ranking I would rate it as my second or third favorite.. Thomas Calden thanks thomas yes mick got worse in terms of intelligibility later on like on exile...cheers!
Not a prude at all, just your preference!, i prefer the invitation card cover as well, and i had as a present, the original album/sleeve in 1968.
Hi John. Do you, like Keith, have a second home in England then? Nice review of a great album. I recently picked up the reissue with the toilet cover. I love that picture actually. Oh well....as I always say of my parents' garden, 'it'll all be mine one day'. Having said that, they'll probably outlast me.
I think the white version of the cover was imposed on them by the label and it's not bad but it doesn't suit the feel of the album and it wasn't what the stones had intended.
Tumbling Dice 72 yeah I know the history but of the two I prefer the invitation white cover...horses for courses I guess
For me, song for song, the most consistent Stones album. It is absolutely flawless, in my opinion. I wouldn't have changed a note. I think it is the band's favourite too, or at least some of the members, including Mick Taylor, who had yet to join.
They can be found...I paid 30 pounds for mine...then saw a copy for 50 the next day!
John Heaton Where did you buy it?
Harrison Clark sister ray record shop in berwick st in London
John Heaton Thanks! I've just been to my guitar lesson. What's their number?
Harrison Clark 75 berwick st ...phone 0207 734 3297 ....it was second hand do not at all sure if they would have one now or if they ship stuff....you can always ask!
There are actually some 80s reissues with this cover. I have a German one. Very affordable.
Brilliant Album as you say John in reference to Brian Jones No Expectations stunning slide guitar a real treat as his contribution to the sessions were almost non exsitent due his life style what a shame and a waste of such a great talent
He played on many of the tracks
He played on more than what you think (8/10 of the tracks, not including jumping jack flash and it's B side Child of the Moon)
Good video John. Not on my list for favorite Stones album save sympathy for the devil and Street fighting man
James Hyatt thanks james
John Heaton And I like the original white cover way better
My gawd. Is this guy a barrister/stamp collector ?
Songs on it ranked worst to best (IMO):

Irishfan007 yes heard that...cheers...about the last gasp from him I guess
