      Nothing went wrong. It was designed to do exactly what it did. The big problem is that people trusted someone with an old money name like bankman lol. He’s never been able to explain where he got his initial money. Plus all your tax dollars that go to Ukraine have been going to ftx, which is then being donated to organizations and politicians by bankman. This wasn’t his idea and I doubt he’s the top of the food chain. There’s a whole network of people profiting of the scam.

      You probably do understand it actually which is why you haven't invested in it. But you've been gaslighted by cryptobros. It literally is a decentralised ponzi, whereby those that hold coins propagate the scheme. Either that or they are incredibly stupid and believe that if one person puts $20k in the pot, and the next one puts $40k in, both can walk away with $40k each or more, which of course is impossible. Either way they think they can watch a few yt vids and get rich without working.

      You clearly don’t know how the world works. Bankman is an old money family name. He’ll get a little slap on the wrist. Maybe pardoned lol. Heck, maybe he’ll buy an 8 million dollar mansion in Israel like Zelensky did for his parents. But he’ll have to take a genetic test to make sure he’s one of them to get his citizenship. It wouldn’t be the first time someone ran there to avoid justice from their scams.

      At least funds for ukraine would not have been taken because they only used FTX as a payment processor to turn crypto into cash for immediate use. But he stole from a lot of rich people, same as madoff.

      There are lots of companies like that. I wouldn't want to invest with them, either. The difference is that those companies don't lie about what they are. You can read the prospectus and see that you're not actually buying gold, you're investing in exposure to the gold price. Like if you buy unallocated shares with the Perth mint, no one actually believes they're buying gold....do they? If they do, they should probably read the prospectus.

    Alexandra Larkin really did justice in the explanation of the sudden liquidity crunch that led to FTX collapse. Though, it is stale news that Idle money gets killed due to inflation. I'm in a privileged position to be able to save almost 65% of our net household income, as I placed it on safer investments. The key for us was not spending beyond our means. If you invest and have other sources of income outside of dividends then you will be able to live off dividends. Got north of $520K in my portfolio as I bought a lot of dividend stocks before, I'm buying more now, and I will buy more when it drops further.

I don't watch the media but the news that you present has enough to know issues going on without riding the emotional rollercoaster if I were to watch the news everyday.     This collapse illustrates the basic problem of investing in a mysterious asset which basically consists of encrypted code which does nothing and is intrinsically worthless without willing buyers. In simple terms, “There’s no there there”. If there’s a “Run” on the “asset”, people trying to convert asset into cash while there are buyers, there’s no bottom!

    The reason that Sam’s clients (most of whom are super-rich) are not taking any loud action against him in the media is that they are embarrassed in front of the world that they had trusted a kid (literally a child) because of their greed to make money out of thin air and that they have been conned by a kid (literally a kid).       I agree with you about derivatives....however they are widely used. How many pensions and insurance companies are invested in CLOs? All of them. Even GLD and SLV are derivatives...and are actually a great analogy to buying crypto on an exchange. If you purchase shares of GLD you don't actually own any gold...just as if you purchase btc on an exchange, you don't actually own any btc.

Like a jeweler may hedge the price of gold or a wheat farmer may hedge the price of wheat.       X Moussa, even if you have the keys, you can still lose lots of money as the value of crypto plummets. The potential for fraud/scams due to the lack of regulation is just another risk on top of that.

    Over the last few years I have looked at crypto several times as prices rocketed, but decided to stay clear. If something appears too good to be true, it probably is. How these big players could get duped is another matter, as with subprime scandal a lack of oversight and pure greed has won again.

      An uptick in volatility is not necessarily a bad thing, there are opportunities to be found even in this whirlwind..Volatility gives you a chance to rebalance. Netflix , Amazon , may have gotten beaten up, but they are still good companies.. You have to get a fiinancial-advisor/brokerr to aid you diversify your portfolio.

      Right, I've been in constant touch with a fiinancial-analyst since covid . You know these days it's really easy to buy into trending stock`s, but the task is determining when to buy or sell . My advisorr decides entry and exit commands on my portfoliio, I've accrued over $550k from an initially stagnant reserve of $150K.

    Binance knew what it was doing: it offered help then withdrew its help a couple days later. Why? Because by doing so the demise of FTX would be guaranteed in a matter of just days instead of weeks or perhaps even months.
    You try to save then back off at the last second, beautifully executed!!! For sure and without a doubt CZ was applying a secret technique from The Art of War.

      Yup, CZ even tweeted something like: "Binance has full rights to NOT go through with acquisition after DD." At this point, CZ had already seen the balance sheet. He knew very well that they would not acquire them."
      In doing this he was also able to prop up the price of FTX coin long enough to dump his massive amount of FTT. A double win. Smart indeed!

    This scam was common in small public companies where one asset, i.e. a patent or copyright, was valued on its future cash flows and used to support the company's stock valuation.

      Like mines, most don't make it on their one asset: but that doesn't make it a scam. It's a penny stock play that doesn't pan out. Venture exchanges are there for a very good RISK reason. RISK is not a scam. This guy was born a scam.

    This is the same thing that happened during the depression, banks did tons of borrowing which lead to bad investment with depositors money. Then that triggered a mass withdraw from said banks forcing them to collapse.....all because it wasn't safely regulated

      I think this is different.
      FTX weren't a bank. They were a currency trader. They had no right to treat their customers' funds as collateral.
      They treated currency gains as realized gains, and therefore profits, when they weren't. Completely at odds with IFRS.
      To me - this seems like a case of fraud.

    I appreciate your approach to teaching.. To my understanding this just proves how much we need an edge as investors because playing the market like everyone else just isn't good enough, we just need to hold onto our hopes and wait to see how things turn out because market movements are almost always unpredictable. In my portfolio, I'm noticing more red than green.
