    Thank you for this video, my winchester was having ejection problems and I managed to find the issue. After racking it, the shell would just stay stuck to the bolt with nothing pushing it out. From watching your video, I figured out that my flat spring was chipped off. Bought a new one. Saved me time and money. Thanks again.

    I'm pretty gun savvy and honestly take pride in being able to totally break down a gun and understanding how they work even if it's the first time I've handled it but I just picked a 1897 up today and and wow, I was scratching my head for a while. This video is really just fantastic and does just an insanely great job of helping me understand this action. Great great great job. I'm very impressed

    I can't imagine how much time went in to making this animation. Thanks for making this video, which should be mandatory viewing for any 1897 owner. Although I completely restored an 1897 and am intimately familiar with its inner workings and function, it was still nice to be able to "see" into the mechanisms and watch them interact.
    Bravo!

      eariamjh71 Unfortunately, he missed how the slide lock works on the 1897. I mentioned how it works in another post, but I did not mention how the recoil lock of an 1897 works. There is a spring between the forearm and the part of the tube that stops the pump from going any further ( all of my 1897s lack the spring right now, so the recoil lock does not work). When the spring is not compressed and the pump is forward, the action slide is in a position where is partially blocks the slide lock on a slope. When the gun fires, the recoil will send the gun back, and the slide will stay put due to inertia. That will free the slide lock to contract and the slide can now be operated. When cycling manually on a properly functioning 1897, you need to push the pump forward a little bit. I believe this was intended to prevent out of battery discharges on hangfires.

    • @TreeWizard648
      @TreeWizard648 7 лет назад

      I got my experience with the inner workings of an 1897 by restoring two 1897s and an 1893 ( the predecessor of the 1897, missing features such as a manual slide unlock or a recoil lock). They are all in shootable condition, and I shoot them all (I fire black powder brass shell loads in my 1893, and it is fun as hell to shoot). Also, my 1897s are all C series guns (one made in 1898 and the other made in 1903), which lack the cartridge retainer buttons and have 3 screw forends( wood mounted to slide by 3 screws).

    Thanks for this video! I inherited a Winchester Model 1897, 16 gauge, shotgun that was my grandfather's. l know that it hasn't been fired in over 40 years & I' now trying to get it cleaned up & ready to use again. The gun appears to be in excellent shape & this really helped me understand how it works. Again, thanks!

    Got one in front of me and trying to figure out what it's hanging up in the return action. This is way fun to watch. I thought mine was way old because it's a trenchgun with a bayonet lug, 20" barrel and sling rings no barrel shield, looked up the serial number ... it's two years younger than I am 1948! Has a number 136 stamped into the stock a couple inches above the steel hashed butt plate. Thanks

    My bolt rubs on the top of the trigger as I begin the cocking of the gun. There is a lot of pressure on the trigger for about 3/4 of an inch before it eases off and finished cocking the gun. Why so much pressure on the trigger from the bolt?

    Thanks for your video. It's 6 years past release date, so doubt my question will be answered. Here goes. I traded for an 1897. Very rough condition. I have most of it sorted. When cycled and ready to fire, without a shell in the chamber, the firing pin can move through its entire stroke. No spring, nothing to keep the firing pin in the full "back" position. Is this normal? Seems like a hard drop with a loaded shell in the chamber could be fired with the inertia of that huge firing pin moving forward. Is there anything that is supposed to block or restrict the firing pin from moving? Or is it just part of the design? Seems dangerous to carry loaded and locked with our some kind of FP block. Thanks

    Seeing how the half-cock feature works (or fails) would be interesting, since accidental discharges in the Model 97 are often blamed on the half-cock feature not working properly.

      37 Ithaca is very simple, much easier than a 97 Winchester.. Directions found via Google are more than sufficient to disassemble and assemble a 37. One suggestion: For your first time, disassemble on a white sheet because of 3 very tiny springs that are very easy to lose and are so fine that they can be difficult to find if dropped.

  • @Berniessen
    @Berniessen 7 лет назад

    I have a 93 and this gave me a big idea of the working and timing of the parts,now i understand exactly how a 93 works,it erms of internet crap that u here thats a 93 is a week gun....The locking mechnism is the same the bolt and carrier lock the gun but the chamber of a 93 is smaller shooting 2 3/4 can cause some unwanted effects.....so much over a 93 this is about a 97.
    The only thing thats not discussed is the pump lock wenn the hammer is cocked,not that its a great thing but its not discusses.

    • @TreeWizard648
      @TreeWizard648 7 лет назад

      Ben Niessen When the hammer falls past a certain point, it will hit an extension on the slide release, pivoting the front towards the right and unlocking the slide. If you look at a slide release, it is mostly straight, but there is an extension sticking out the side.

    • @TreeWizard648
      @TreeWizard648 7 лет назад

      On an 1897, there is a button that interfaces with a piece in the bolt carrier that pushes on the far end of the slide release past the extension ( on an 1893, the extension is at the far end)

    • @Berniessen
      @Berniessen 7 лет назад

      Sorry i wrote it wrong (english isnt my first language) but what i ment is:
      The basic between the 93 and 97 are the same the main moving parts carrier and bolt are designed that wenn a fired shells created recoil it puts pressure against the front/face of the bolt pushing the bolt back,but the carrier is designed that its impossible to go down by the recoil pressure it will only lock itself harder......................Yes the pump locks are 100% diffent,the 93 has a small hook comming from the bolt and falling in the carrier wenn the firepin is ready to be hit................
      A 93 with a chamber for 2 3/4 inch shells is a gun that i am not afraid to shoot light smokeless power shells in...
      In fact a 93 with 97 barrel is in my vieuw just as solid,but the 97 is the better gun in terms of ejecting and it has a button to open the action,and the later ones can empty the magazine quickly,but in terms of strength........Wenn they both have the same barrel,i am pretty sure the 93 stands its man vs the 97,but people talk like chicken with no heads they just read the same crap:
      93 is made for smokeless power only,a 97 has better steel,a 97 is made stronger......
      Wenn u look at the techinal diffences u see that there is hardly any diffence in strength only the cut out on top of the receiver is a negative thing,but i like it that the shells from magazing that are pushed on the carrier push out the shells that are clamped on the bolt by the extractors..
      The real recoil pressure will go trough the bolt surface and then trough the carrier and it ends up in the rear of the receiver on that pin where the carrier moves on,and that pin is in nearly solid steel on both guns that piece of the receiver is the strongest part in both guns...But thats my idea of the strength of the 2 guns..

    • @codymoncrief2128
      @codymoncrief2128 7 лет назад

      Ben Niessen From what I have heard, it is the metallurgy, most specifically the barrel, that is considered weak.

    • @Berniessen
      @Berniessen 5 лет назад

      @@codymoncrief2128 I convert these guns here in holland from unsafe 93 to a safe 97 action and i mostly swap barrels for a few reason one is most 93 barrels are in bad condition so i need to swap them 2th a 97 barrel is thinner so the 97 action bar with screw cap wont rub against the barrel,if the 93 barrel is in good condition i leave it as it.
      U really think a barrel in 96 was made from diffent steel as a barrel in 97 by the way i had a very very early 1897 in repair a few weeks back serial number 39175 and it the barrel on it from the B model 1893,s with last patent date 1896 and it had a bigger bore then a later 97 i measured sooo basicly on the very first 97,s 1893 left over parts where used.....
      I shot a few 1700/1750 fps 1oz slugs with a 1893 made in 1894 and the shotgun stayed in piece (loaded with 39 grains accurate nr5) the recoil was not pleasant but a 93/97 is build as a tank really its a myth a 93 is weak and cant handle smokeless....
