That was a real BEES KNEES DAVE..! I guess the hint was when the previous owner stated he left it set awhile before parting with it. After seeing that, I will definitely pull the top covers to see what critters left. Your renters is a first for me. I had an old a Toro Super Recycler that a customer had it in storage in a barn. It had a large Fluffy nest init. I didn't look and it started smoking when I started it to warm it up to change the oil. On those shroud studs, After I get them off the cover, when I reinstall them I put a little medium lock tight on them to help keep them in. And do the never sneeze on the nut side threads like you do (I watch Taryl also and Bruce Pender). I got a Pender Lift also. I learned something about the auto choke when you took it off to get the carb off. I just had one that gave me a fit. It had an auto choke problem also. The left carb bracket was causing the the top of the choke shaft to catch on it and cause a no choke issue. I went back to Steve's Small Engine's channel and remembered he showed how to correct it. It was a last ditch effort by a dumbfounded mechanic that won this time. But when I pulled the cover and saw it, I thought 2 things. 1, the song I am a champion by queen came to mind, and 2, “hit the record on the phone fast!!!”
