  • Remembering my late Tang Soo Do instructor, Master Yun Tak Bong, as a martial artist and friend. Master Yun died in 1991 from a motorcycle accident in Korea. May he rest in peace and I hope to carry on his martial teachings and spirit in all of the content found here.

Thank you Master for sharing these wonderful stories about Master Yun Tak Bong. I have trained TSD with a few instructors in Kumi and Daegu. Their orientation was more prone to sports and competition than a Life Style. I love the way you explained in this 2-part videos. Makes me homesick to think about my years in South Korea and the many friends I have left over there. You Sir, had a great teacher! Long Live Master Yun Tak Bong! May his banner wave forever! God Bless You, Sir!

Thank you, Eduardo for your kind words. I have been blessed to have had great instructors over the years, but none like Master Yun. It was a different time, and it wasn't the Korea of today. To have trained in such a dojang in the old school ways and the lessons learned have stayed with me my whole life. Tang Soo! 👊

What a wonderful blessing of a lifetime. Such a great life coach. I wanted to learn martial arts just never had the time. Martial is mankind's greatest gift. Thank you for this inspiring video.

Hello Robert! Thank you for your kind words. My time training with Master Yun is a time in my life I truly cherish. You can still learn martial arts, you are never too old. I created online courses through the Udemy learning platform to give individuals the ability to learn in their own homes and at their own pace, learning Traditional Tang Soo Do as Master Yun taught me.
You can check them out on my website at kputala.com. and I help all of my students along their journey, currently over 250 in 36 countries.
Again, thank you for your comment, and have a great weekend!

Liked & Subscribed!, I started my MOODUKKWAN training in 1974. under KWANJANGNIM KANG MYUNG KYU, and SAWBUMNIM LEE JONG WHAN,... You and I are lucky to have trained in Old School MOODUKKWAN, ,.. and Yes, I also trained in Korea!

Hello David, I agree that we are blessed to have trained in a place and time that no longer exists. A time before sport, MMA, and in old school dojangs purely focused on the art. It was a very different Korea than the economic powerhouse it is today!

That was pretty cool of your base commander let it go when you were on quarters.

Hi Terrance, thank you, Master Yun was a great martial artist, teacher, and friend. As you begin, just remember it is a journey and takes time, effort, and patience. Don't focus on the belt, but the skill level you develop. Most importantly, enjoy yourself! 👊🥋

@Kevin W. Putala I got nothing but time. I'm a school teacher myself so I understand the importance of being prepared. Just one quick question I watched one of your videos about belts and was interested in the colours white, blue, red, black. Why was this adopted when the midnight blue belt is also used ? Was this master yun's personal preference ? Sorry just interested 😊

@@MrTerencemaxwell Traditionally, Tang Soo Do black belts where a midnight blue belt instead of black abs then get red stripes through the middle as they progress. I wear black because in the mid eighties midnight blue belts were extremely hard to find in the US, and as I started training in other arts and earned black belts it was easier for me to just stay with black. Also, everyone knows what a black belt is compared to midnight blue. I still have the midnight blue belt Master Yun handed me at my black belt test, but it no longer fits. (I'm working on that!) 🤣
As for the belt system, that was the same system Master Yun used, and thinking about it, the Korean Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan Association must have used the same system at the time, as they issued the official rank.
When I returned to the states I tried finding a Tang Soo Do school but there were none to be found anywhere I lived at the time. I came across two in NY, but neither looked anything like what I learned in Korea. One was a guy who couldn't even pronounce the name properly, and the other was a Soo Bahk Do school which Moo Duk Kwan founder GM Hwang Kee evolved his TSD into. It was all about who was who's senior and was alot more fluff than martial art. I also tried joining different governing bodies but they are all politics, so I have taught and promoted as an independent instructor for years. I like the belt system as it keeps the focus on the skill, but what color or stripes you have. Schools now have all the colors of the rainbow and all these stripes, and charge a fee for each test. Most will pass you as long as you pay. I've taught for free all my life except for a couple of private students. My courses are dirt cheap, but I charge regular testing fees for three belt colors, not 12+. I promised Master Yun to pass on his legacy and the art, and making a positive difference in someone's life is worth more to me than fees.
