everyone jokes that mario was hallucinating the whole time, they’re half right. mario really does save the princess in the mushroom kingdom and all that jazz, but the inanimate objects with eyes don’t actually have eyes*. those are just mario subconsciously remembering his tour, wondering if he should have shot his foot when he had the chance, until realizing that if he had done that, he might not have been able to save the kingdom with his jumps. *addendum: the powerups as a semi-exception to the “never actually had eyes” rule. they’re likely weird markings on the flora and fungi that had some evolution purposes, and stars are connected to star beings such as the spirits like geno and the paper mario ones, the limas from like galaxy, and whatever starlow is, but i HEAVILY digress. also lakitu’s cloud is alive too, it’s almost certainly a wind spirit like madame flurrie from ttyd

My favorite character in this game is the guy who smokes cigars, yeah, he does hinder you, but this is a great detail that you don’t get in modern day kids media due to obvious reasons.
