WHY Does Your Anatomy SUCK? Figure Sketch Tutorial

- Hello Everybunny!
I have whipped up a smol tutorial of sorts that imo takes a different perspective than other tutorials I've seen? I kind of want to take this concept and place it in your own hands so you can draw efficiently at your own pace. This talks about figure/gesture drawing and how to better anatomy for both anime artists and artists in general. This was recorded a while back so I apologize for art that's not completely up to par with how I draw now (both the speedpaint and figure drawing segments). That's the magic of all of this, you look back on it and can point out flaws. No need to feel bad, learn from it as you continue drawing!
There is a talking part and then a part where I pretty much live draw so it isnt cut like normal and you may hear lots of me shuffling lol.
Hopefully this helps! I know its an abstract one lol
Let me know your thoughts!!

I used to think that using references was somehow cheating. But I’ve seen the most improvement by using them.
I did too, so I had a really difficult time getting better.
References are so so important, even professionals rely heavily on it.
Same
That's stupid! THEY ARE NOT CHEATING
Everyone does them! Even Disney!

My anatomy is always stiff and then when I finish a piece I feel horrible because I see the mistakes and then go through an art block then get anxious and start comparing myself to other artists no matter what I do or practice they are always stiff and I don't know what to do I practiced every part of the human body but no matter what they always come out stiff.....
Uhm, I don't have much advice for the stiff poses but when you look at other people's art think what you like about their art and try incorporate what you like about theirs into yours, take your time and continue doing your best!
@@L0rdOfThePies Thank you for the advice and I will ! ^♡^
That might be a problem of posing rather than anatomy. Fluid poses are rather hard when you are studying, but they do make art look less stiff usually
Maybe try a line of action? It can help with fluidity and less stiff drawings, hope this somewhat helps

Shading: lemme introduce myself
Unfortunately, I find myself unable to break down real images. Instead I try to find drawn references to try and use.
I’m not sure why my brain is like this, but it is. Good thing I don’t wanna go professional lol it’s a hobby to alleviate anxiety.
Either or won't hurt you in the long run. Keep drawing and don't put yourself down! If learning in an "industry standard" doesn't work for you, don't pressure yourself to do it. Everyone learns differently, and there's nothing wrong with that! If drawn references help you, don't feel bad 👍
Personally I’m quite happy with where I’m at! But I shared that due to the frustration-most of the art tips are “reference from life” and I’m fairly certain it’s one mental illness or another preventing me. My pfp is actually a piece from a year ago that I adore! A few anatomy issues yes, but I started using Pinterest to find my references and that’s helped a lot :)
I used to have this exact problem! It's sometimes hard to see the shapes and lines in real life.
If youre interested in learning how to get through it, it helps to trace over pictures to see what shapes everything is made out of, eventually you just learn to see it in your mind. However don't use the traced layer for your own art, just to see the shapes so you learn how to recreate the shapes on your own.
I'm the EXACT same, i cannot for the life of me look at something real and understand how the hell to break it down and transfer it to my own style
references other professional artists for practice is 100% fine imo, you can learn a lot from other people, but you can also learn their mistakes too so its best to have a blend of real life references and other.
One thing I hate about my art is everytime I settled this own art style, when I try to draw a different pose it changes the art style and vibe I'm going with. Please help me get through this
Yo same
I used to have that problem too. But the best way around this is to drop the mentality that you *have* to do things *just* to fit this "art style" and do what you like because ur just holding yourself back, honestly. I believe that because of the same reason, a lot of artists just hold themselves back and get mad whenever they don't achieve perfection and make it look pretty for other people.
After a while of doing art out of nothing else but inspiration, I had this sudden urge to finally *learn* . So I dropped the whole "finding my art style" and just studied from a bunch of websites artists to know more. Because art style, this I can guarantee, comes *after* you learn how to do something properly, this is where you can finally stylize them and feel confident that you're doing it right. And everyone starts off trying to copy the other artists way of doing art so it's not wrong either, we take some things from them as we grow as our own artist too. Lol sorry for this long ass essay but wanted to share a bit of my journey. Good day
Why does it matter what "style" you have? Just draw what feels natural to you
art style is something youre not supposed to fit in, its supposed to be found when your fundamentals are already pretty solid and your art is gettibg consistent. dont force yourself to fit to a style it will just stunt your growth as an artist.
My artstyle just legit boosted idk how but it did. Maybe just keep doing that and you'll get one you like :/
I think my problem is that I need *everything* to be perfect unless I feel like a failure which sends me into an art block. I’m trying to develop my style but everything I draw doesn’t look right at all :(
not everything has to look perfect, start easy and simple! for example, you could draw a pose in stick figure form and then add precise details. you could also look at pose references on pinterest and start simple from looking at that! we all have art blocks at some point but try to get your brain working. when you're drawing either realism or cartoony, etc you can ask someone how it looks and what they think it is. that way you can get advice or tips on how to draw whatever your drawing. you can also start drawing something one by one bc you can practice that one thing everyday and eventually you'll get used to drawing it. for your art style, you want to find what makes you feel comfortable drawing. for example, what do you want your eyes to look like? try and practice what you want your eyes to look like. also, please don't copy other people's art style bc you won't be able to find and understand your art style from copying from that artist. ofc it takes time to perfect something but trust the process and keep practicing! idk if this will be helpful but this is what i have been doing!
If thats the case, figure drawing may be for you or not for you
same. i've always had the mindset of "if i don't get it right on the first try i'm embarrassing" even though i know no one is where they want to be when they first start something
thats part of the process ! look at some of ur favorite artists , pick out some things you like abt their art , it could b the coloring , the lineart yadda yadda , doing these small things will help u SO MUCH !!! people dont learn at the same pace , if you take longer to develop a style you like thats ok ! just take ur time
right this is why i stopped drawing
This opens my eyes up a bit more, I never use references but I'll start using them more. Also, COMPLETELY UNRELATED, but oh my god your art is literally gorgeous-- You are so underrated. Gesture drawings/refs are SO helpful. I recently started practicing with them a bunch and it's made anatomy a lot more digestible for me. I used to use no references because they were discouraged in the art community, but as time has gone on that mindset has mostly changed. I did alright teaching myself without references, but using them actively has sped the process up ten fold.
People need to pace themselves when they are trying to find there style and there are a lot of styles out there, you have to expirement and learn your video is really good. I like how you explain things

Edit: now I’m getting better UwU digital art is definitely my thing
If you do digital art, there's an option to select a part of your drawing, and reshape it to match the size of the rest of your drawing. I don't know what much you can do with traditional art, except you can first draw the head connected to the shoulders and collarbone, and draw out the torso from there. I'm not a professional, but this is just what I do and I hope this is helpful.
Random Comment12 thanks i will try that UwU
Nam Nam ;-; you could also try going down a chibi style with that! chibi/cartoony styles have big heads and small bodies, so maybe you could try looking up chibi stuff and go down that route! some "flaws" you see in your style can be a great part of a style you havent tried!
if youre wishing to do more realism/anime, try making the head smaller digitally. If you do traditional, just very lightly sketch the head and if it looks too big, keep making it a little smaller until you like it!
i have a big head and small body too and I dont like it
if I try to make a character or a busty one I fail so hard
You should learn the proportions of the body.
I would pay for you to mentor me in anatomy. I struggle with anatomy so hard because I’m disproportionate as a person and I use me for reference. Every time I try to use a reference I end up just copying it entirely and don’t learn anything.
Break it down. Don't try to learn everything at once. You can start with a certain body part first. Don't be hasty and the reward is amazing. After that you can practice proportions and if you want to take it further, study the muscles and learn the limit of a body. Perspective is also a reaally important thing and it includes foreshortening so it's tough but like I said, the product is satisfying. Don't ever stop learning because no artist does. Good luck!
Loll im also a disproportionate person my arms and legs long af
Me too"(
I asked an older artist about anatomy and the answer I got was: "Draw porn."
I deleted all my social media for 2 weeks
**EDIT** :for the love of God, this is just a dumb joke. These events did not even happen, I simply made it up to make the joke 'figure drawing helps improve your anatomy'. Please either take the joke or ignore this comment.
Ironically, it is the best way to learn anatomy haha.
But the ways she said are just as effective!
I mean.
It exposes everything. So it sounds... Fairly reasonable..?
But then again you would be drawing peepees-
Uhhhhh I think they worded that wrong 😂😂
To get a better idea of anatomy, you can draw (and study references of) nude models to get an idea of the shape of the body but you don't have to draw the naughty bits. That's why in a male blank base, down by the crotch doesn't have that "part" shown. It only shows as what someone looks like with pants on except there isn't any clothes. Basically it gives the basic shape of the body without actually showing the naughty buts
@@JewelWildmoon True enough.
Though it's funny to just draw a butt. And just a butt, nothing else. I don't think of considering to draw those naughty things-
@@shiningknight661 omg true. The first time I tried it for practice I legit couldn't stop laughing 😆

Even though I am a person who likes to draw animals in their anthro or feral form this helped me surprisingly much!
I am only 14, not professional at all, but I‘d like to share a technique tho:) (may be also helpful for people who draw furrys?)
I sometimes take photos of myself for reference purposes, and I have to admit , it helps me even more than just looking up refs on the internet, because you like, idk, feel the pose. I also do that with hands and stuff. I just feel more familiar with drawing from myself, because I can also check if the poses are natural and not stiff or exhausting. I don‘t know how to explain this, and it sounded way better in my head:,)
I wondered if making my own poses would help. Thing is... when I'm sitting down and in a drawing mood, it's usually late at night when I don't want to, well, stand.
Oh my god, another 14-year-old fur! Hello! The thing that helps me the most is looking at art. A lot. I have a couple of books on drawing anime that help a lot too when it comes to tips on posing and stiffness. Watching speedpaints also help with shading and just breaking down art. I’ve recently been getting into 3d modeling so I sometimes use 3d models for reference! It’s like an anthro poseable doll that doesn’t cost hundreds of dollars and that you can find on the internet. If you’re interested, you can download models from Sketchfab! I’ve recently opened commissions and am officially making money off my work at age 14 with these tips!
i cant draw animals for example if i try to draw a cat i draw a streched out bighead with a stick body so i definitely wont ever be able to draw furries
I do that alot too! Its worth my family asking me what im doing
I also do that It's a good way for references I saw your pfp Is that drawing yours If so It's so good!

Uhm, hiya! It’s my first time watching a video from your channel, and Im so glad this popped up in my recommendations. As a young artist myself, I’ve always avoided trying to draw bodies because I would never do it well. For the past year I have improved but not really a good way. I’ve gotten too comfortable only drawing bodies from the head to the neck/torso and because of all this free time I think its a good chance to work up my skills. This has bee one of the most helpful videos Ive seen on figure drawings and I’ve wanted to thank you. I’m not very self confident in myself and I always bring myself down, especially when it comes to art. I’m working on becoming better, and I will absolutely watch more of your videos. Thank you so much.

I really appreciate you saying that if we draw something, and notice that something’s wrong, that means we’ve improved. I feel like our mind for drawing has improved, and our actual ability of drawing just needs to catch up.
What you're talking about is actually called "gesture drawing." It definitely helps with both anatomy and avoiding stiffness in the body.

My anatomy used to look inherently stiff and it just wouldn't look the way I wanted it too, but I tried figure draw a long time ago because it touched upon the look I wanted. This definitely works👍
the most common reason is the artstyle.
yeah thats kinda it-
For hands I just use my own hand as a reference as well as the pose (I’m really weird so I always do dynamic poses at home where I can really do them without feeling awkward) I also put the facial features I want them to have on my face and put myself in that position that I am drawing them in. I am also just realizing how in depth I put myself in my drawings-
This is the most logical and helpful thing I’ve ever heard when searching for these videos…. And I haven’t even watched half of it yet…..Thanks!!
Not sure why this was in my recommended section but im glad it was💕
When you said figure drawing are meant to be fast I was really confused but then I realized you were talking about gesture drawings and contours. Then I was like "Oh. Yeah, that makes sense." lol
ive never heard someone curse so aggressively without actually cursing xD
I get art style crisis all the time, because I get so frustrated and the littlest bit insecure when I can't get the perspective of the anatomy right (like when a hand is being held towards the camera) and I go through an art block for a while, and then I get inspiration that gets me kicking for a good while and then repeat.
Even so, I'm not giving up. One day I'll be able to draw a pose in perspective and it's gonna be awesome 😌 i'll burn through as many tutorials as it takes. Thanks for the wonderful video! You really opened my eyes to all the possibilities that I didn't even know existed haha
Ah! Thank you so much!! I'm so gonna practice figure sketching right now, and once I get a computer that can handle an art program- I shall practice on that as well!
Oh my God.

Omg ur explanation is literally so true- like I watched so much bad or confusing tutorialsss
this was pretty helpful! for a long time ive been somewhat scared to draw full poses because i kiiind of suck at it. but now i know what to do and can really start developing my art more. plus i would be able to draw men in high heel boots once i learn how to draw poses haha :}

i found the perfect anatomy tutorial 😫 i always suffer in anatomy bc i dont use reference cause some people call it cheating but referencing does help you a lot.
Hey um ;-; i saw one of your older videos of amberlynn or what was her name.. But anyways you make very good content! All i want to ask is, how can I learn to love myself or at least like myself more?
It's very hard, even I struggle with that sometimes 😭 We are our own worst critics. Nobody hates our flaws more than ourselves. We tend to hyper fixate on what's not perfect and beat ourselves up about it. In Amberlynn's case, most people who dislike her feel that way because she's dishonest or makes bad excuses for herself. I rarely ever see a comment making fun of her appearance. We expect other people to think that way about us (insulting our appearance or small flaws, etc)
But you know what, the truth is someone out there is always gonna have something to say that we aren't gonna like. Someone is going to think we're ugly, fat, dumb, bad at whatever it is we're doing, and all that hooplah. It's always going to exist. But we can't fixate on that. Most of those people wouldn't spend more than 2 seconds thinking about you, and you shouldn't think of yourself like that for any longer either.
Treat yourself like you love yourself, even if you don't. Take good care, dress in ways that make you feel good, eat things that fuel your body and make you feel good. It's ok to make misteps sometimes. If you catch yourself thinking something negative, stop in the moment and turn it into an honest compliment, even if you don't believe it at the time.
You deserve to love yourself
These tips really helped me surprisingly, my anatomy is progressing so much as when i first found this video a few weeks ago, thank you so much
for me it’s the limbs that I have trouble with. “Are the arms too long/short?” “Did I make the arm bend at the right point?” “Are the hands too small/big?” and i look at other references but it just doesn’t help :/
My advice is to try to learn something in as many of your drawings as you can. Like in one drawing you try to improve your hands, or in another you try knees or maybe the placement of facial features on the head. Try to remember where things are positioned and how they're shaped and you'll improve (somewhat) quickly. I'd also recommend thinking about how it would look if it was 3d; how things curve around each other, what goes in front, what goes behind, etc. :)
You got me subscribed the moment u said "animuuuu"
something i do personally is look at anime figures (either ones i own or online, ones you own are better because you can get all sorts of perspectives on them) and do figure drawings of them! it's like an anime style live figure if you have any of your own, and images online of them work too for simple poses!
“WHY does your anatomy SUCK” me: I feel hurt.
I have been drawing for over ten years and I can honestly say that I WISH I WAS TAUGHT THE FUNDAMENTALS AT AN EARLY AGE.
“Gosh dangle” like three seconds in and I’m drawn to that weird red text on my screen.
I think another useful way to practice your anatomy is to use your own body as a reference sometimes. If you can't seem to find any reference to the way your character is keeping their hand, take a picture of yours and break it down. Also, my strategy with anatomy was repetitiveness. I drew the same body parts over and over again until it routinely came to my hand. :)
I dispise anatomy. I draw the hips of the the girls a little bellows their chest and short arms 👍
I try taking pictures of myself or looking at other anime chibi drawings like that's my art style so I look up speed paints google pics and analyze the body It helps me a lot.

My question: how the heck do you know where and how to place the lines in hair???
You need to treat those lines in hair like the piping in track pants. They need to
a) follow the direction and flow of the hair (if the hair is curly, they are curly too).
b) NOT be in the middle of the hair strand outline (they need to give the hair strand volume. They should curve closer to one of the outlines depending on which direction the character is facing. For example, if your character has straight hair and is looking to their right (and your left), then the lines should be placed closer to the left of your lines.)
c) practice. This sounds dumb but after some time, you'll know when the lines in hair just _look_ right. Just like how you can instantly tell a sentence structure is wrong before exactly pinpointing the type of grammar mistake, observe and refer drawings with hair you like, and copy that style as best as you can. Imitation is the highest form of flattery - and also the fastest way to getting a gut instinct. Remember not to always trace though!

I’ve been looking through some of the comments and a lot of people really recommend to use nude references, to see where everything is and how to get the anatomy down; but I don’t think these people understand that most of the children on here *dont* want to loose their “innocence”. A lot of children don’t know where the line between “right & wrong” is and they feel as if this would be wrong. I do think we should normalize nude referencing more and it not be “erotic”.
This was just to clear things up, personally I’ve never used a nude reference imagine, and I’m not planning to, but I wanted to let you know why children wouldn’t do it
I have been in an art block for well over a month
Funnily enough, during quarantine, and omg I get so anxious about it but watching this video, I can definitely practise figure drawing during this time
Thank u for this video
I love how you say that it’s kinda up to us how we draw each thing because I remember back around 5-6th grade my art teacher would fix my drawings because they weren’t realistic enough- They literally drew on my picture- which was funny considering my mountains had faces on them and the sand had faces on them- hmm I wonder if I was maybe trying to draw a cartoon drawing? Huh XD
thank you so much for this! i was actually having a lot of trouble with anatomy, and this helped me a lot. once again, thank you! your channel has inspired me so much it’s amazing. however, please dont stress over that statement! i understand that sentence can induce stress, however please post at your own pace. you helped me out during a really traumatic/rough time in my life, so if you are ever having a bad time, please dont hesitate to rest! once again thank you, im a young artist but this still helped me !!
I’m actually so excited to try this out. My anatomy isn’t the best and I really like your art! I’m really happy you made this video, other tutorials are never really “Straight to the point” and it’s hard to comprehend. I just subbed!
Not gonna lie I haven't even heard of quick poses or figure drawing but now that I've watched this video I think my art will get better!
its really good to use references of ballerinas for figure drawing when you want to work on dynamic poses. ballerinas are extremely flexible and graceful, wonderful practice. i recommend 1000%
thanks for this kind of insight, i never thought of it the way you thought of it, and now I do. I'm slowly learning.. THANKS ALOT!
I will admit, i expected to see a video saying "realism is thrash, you don't need it, don't listen to your art teachers".
Well, i'm positively surprised. You are actually giving good advice that i can even confirm they work for beginners
I think that maybe this will be the video i'm sending to everyone who asks me how did i get to this place
Ngl watching you draw helped me get more motivation and like my drawings for once
these are actually really helpful and professional tips tysm
