NFL doesn't actually have grass. It looks like it, but it's actually turf. That way players won't get itchy. But when they get tackled, it kind of burns them.
As someone who has played hockey their entire life, most of the time it doesn't hurt until you get out of bed the next day. That's when you really feel the pain.

Yeah it almost always took about 12hrs to really feel the pain and stiffness except the time I cracked 2 ribs on lip where the boards met the glass and the the open ice flip I took that actually cracked my Cooper from the adjustment screw to the ear opening both times it was hard to finish those 2 games. God do I miss playing and the satisfaction of laying another guy flat on his back. Played LD from late elementary school all the way thru highschool league. Didn't get my Letterman's jacket cause the last game of the high school tournament SR. Year I dropped the gloves and cleaned Drew Terry's clock me and that guy hated each other for 4 solid years and it was so worth it not getting my letter to punch that guy.

He survived because there was a team doctor who was a vietnam war vet there who pinched it shut until they could get it taken care of. It was pretty gruesome, definitely one of the scariest injuries I can think of in pro sports. Now the goalies all wear a protective piece of plastic around their neck to prevent that from happening though.
While not a goalie....nor a throat injury, there was also drew miller... skate to the face in 2015. Played very next game with full face cage. These guys play 82 games per season, many back to backs. You can fit an entire NFL season into one month of NHL play. Plus the 16 wins needed to win the ultimate trophy in sports.

A study came out recently and compared the power ( Decanewton ) between an impact in hockey and American football. The results showed that the impacts were 4 to 6 times more violent in hockey. They also determined that the risk of injury was higher in Rugby than in American Football. However, injury severity was higher in American Football due to speed and equipment.
As measured by the NHL in... I think it was the 2019 or 2020 season... the average skating speed of a normal NHL grade pro hockey player is 15 to 35 KPH. The fastest out there can skate upwards of 40 KPH. Defensemen, in particular, can skate 15 to 20 KPH BACKWARDS, which is probably the most stunning of all the stats.
@@vagabond142 funny you mention that, i was a defenceman most of my playing days, and when it came to skating speed, i was always one of the slowest on the team, however, when it came to backwards skating, i was always one of, if not the fastest.
As somebody that played both sports for a very long time, and I'd say it depends on the hit. in hockey It's not always a head to head collision a lot of times it's from the side or even behind in football you're running straight at each other, also in football its somebody actually planting their feet into the ground, which you cannot do in hockey, and driving the weight of their body through yours! So both sports have some very hard hits but I've definitely been hit harder in football than I have been in Hockey
Another one of the first rules when you're learning is how to check properly. Arms in tight, elbows down, shoulder first. That way, the most force is spread over the most area of the opposing player, allowing them to take the check and maybe get knocked down, squished against the boards, or even go flying, but you'll see in most clean hits that the checked player will adjust their helmet, get back on their feet, and keep playing. And often, on really good hip checks or non-interference checks, the checked player will sometimes go to the player that checked them and say "good effort" or "good check" or "playing hard today, eh?" with a smile. The players love going hard, having a good, clean game, and the thrill of the sport.
I’m a Canadian who plays rugby and hockey. Most people in Canada don’t know much about rugby and think that it’s insane rugby players don’t wear equipment. It’s cool to see that you guys have a similar reaction to hockey as most Canadians do to rugby.
As a Canadian i think it's cute when people call it "ice hockey" or " snow skiing " it's just Hockey and Skiing to us. I love other cultures different sayings.
I probably already said it on your other channel, but hockey is one of those games that to fully appreciate, you have got to watch it live. On TV the cameramen are tracking the players, and the puck, so you don't really get a good feel for how fast they are actually going. You might get a slight idea if you try to fix your eyes on something stationary in the video.

On a work trip to hockey-mad Minnesota, I was talking to someone who was a defenseman in high school. He said he loved playing defense because "every now and then you just have to whale on somebody". That's hockey: fast, athletic, passionate, and full contact.
my brother was a defense when he was in highschool he was 260 6ft tall people flew when he would go clear the corners we only have a 1 year difference i was the goalie laughing my butt of every time. if anybody touched me after the whistle they were dead my entire team jumped them. tip for anybody in hockey don't mess with the guy in the net blocking the shots he is like the teams younger brother touching him is touching the team.

"We're they fighting"? Um yeah they were, that's what A LOT of people watch hockey to see. There are guys on the team's called enforcers and their purpose is their willingness/ability to fight.
As a Michigander, I always love seeing people watch Hockey for the first time. I hope you find some videos of the more technical aspects of the game as well and check that out. The skill level is insane. And if you happen to find a video with people throwing Octopi onto the ice, just know you are watching a Detroit Red Wings game.
The most brutal thing ever witnessed in a hockey game was when a goalie named Clint Malarchuk had his jugular nicked by an upended player. The swift action of the trainer saved his life. He nearly died on the ice.

I was watching that game on tv. For a few seconds the other players continued to battle for puck, not realizing what had just happened. I was also watching the game in which Trent McCleary took a slapshot to the throat, crushing his larynx, which necessitated an emergency tracheotomy and ended his career
It is hard to see just how huge and strong these guys are. Like American Football and Rugby these guys are monsters. They are all well over 6 feet and probably in the 230 lb range. The speed at which these guys are moving, and in opposite directions, creates an impact force that is huge. The athleticism of these guys is amazing. They are indeed well padded up but those outfits are heavy! They are tough dudes you wouldn't want angry at you.
Great video. As a former hockey player your reaction was awesome. I am surprised that ice hockey isn't more popular in New Zealand. Many of the Kiwis that I know have been pretty tough guys from their playing rugby.
You should react to skill aspects of the game, not just hits and fights. It’s and incredibly underrated and under appreciated sport. It takes so much skill to do what they do while guys are trying to hit them like this!
My Dad played 🏒 in the Canadian Minor League Hockey, back in the 60's (before any kind of face shields, and extra padding)...He got hit by a hockey stick, so hard in the chest, and He got a Hiatal Hernia from it, and got His Nose Broken, so many times, that the Nasal Cartilage was so destroyed, that it was completely replaced with plastic (He loved to fight😉)...He still played, until deciding to go to the U.S. and joined the Navy, during Vietnam. The thing with hockey is the speed at which they are moving on the ice. Combined with the size of the players can lead to some large impacts. There have been some rule changes where players cannot directly target another player's head with a body check. Some of the hits in the video were from before that went into effect.
Yes, the physics are insanely fast. Keeping your head on a swivel is imperative. Sometimes the blades hurt players but not often. Hitting with the stick is cross checking and isn't allowed. You'll get a penalty. You can only hit players with the puck or who only just gave it up. Major strategy involves playing the body instead of the puck, especially on defense. It is really hard to time hits well. But done properly, you can really lay someone out

Dating my husband who was from Maine. His mom brought out family photos to go over. I started getting concerned, every holiday Thanksgiving, Christmas one or 2 of the children had bandages or casts. The best Center Ice Checker I have ever seen was Scott Stevens. EVERYONE always got up and cheered as his checks because in many cases the other guy needed help getting up again or went flying. I remember attending on Washington Capitals game at the Capital Center (RIP) and they were playing their rival Philly. Scott center ice checked a Philly player, and I kid you not, that player went flying a good SIX feet in the air flipping over and slamming onto the ice. The entire arena jumped up and cheered. That was a beautiful sight to see.
hey from Canada . I remember when hockey players had no helmets or faceshields. most the players had no front teeth and many face scars. Do remember 1 player having his throat slashed with a blade . They have cleaned it up lots in the past 30 yrs . helmets, face shields, mouth guards and fighting has been fround on also . What a game from early 70's to see what hockey use to be . Greetings from Canada. I married a Kiwi, (she's been here 22 years now.) I play recreationally 80+ games per year (not during Covid though.) I'm a goalie and my wife could only handle watching me play once... never again. She couldn't stand watching pucks being shot at me. I've never been hurt though. I play "beer league" hockey which means it not such a high level that you can't have some beers after the game, and there's no hitting allowed, (there's plenty of bumping though.) The big hits you saw in that video happen only occasionally. In a typical game there is lots of hitting but mostly not as brutal as the ones in this video. Fighting is a part of the game but it is penalized. You might get one fight per game if you're lucky these days. There used to be a lot of "staged" fights between the two "goons" or tough guys on each team, but it's back to being more spontaneous between two guys who have gotten under each other's skin. If you want to get a feel for the intensity of the playoffs, there's a montage put together by the Canadian broadcaster of the games that captures it pretty well. @@shenran9164 Chances of that happening anymore are slim to none. The worst you'll get is little bits of safety glass in your lap. Nowadays the glass shatters into small dull rock type things, if it shatters at all. And it's most likely going to have to come from a shot that found a corner of the pane where tempered glass has its weak spots. Brute force hits aren't going to break it unless it's been used for a long time and slowly weakened. I've broken one pane in my life. I was at an open hockey session and my shot hit the crossbar and then the very top edge of the glass. Shattered but stayed together.
I grew up in the south so didn’t know much about hockey. Then I moved to Michigan and got totally sucked in to the Detroit Red Wings. My son is still a fan even though we live in Colorado now.

You have guys who are the same size as players in the NFL going at close to 20 mph cause of the ice. One player stands at 6 10 without skates on and is over 7 feet tall with skates
I don't know much about hockey but I think one of the positions is called the Enforcer. His job is to do the hits and they get in a lot of fights. But I am probably wrong.

If you guys wanna see some hard hits I highly recommend a Scott Stevens compilation. He had a reputation for being one of the most feared hitters. Even shortening careers because of his hits.
Pretty sure he is safe bet for top spot in most feared category. Lindros was a big dude to flatten like Steven's did. And he probably ended more careers than anyone. When headhunting was an artform.

Funny story…so, I grew up in rural northern Oklahoma. On the southern Great Plains. Far from any ice rinks. Lol. We couldn’t get cable when I was a kid, so we had a giant old C-band satellite dish to get pay channels outside of what our antenna could bring in over-the-air. This allowed me to be able to pick up CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) stations coming out of Canada and watch the old-school Molson Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts. Which is roughly the Canadian equivalent of Monday Night Football or Sunday Night Football here in the States. Big-time TV sports. Hockey is not a very popular sport in the southern United States, so it opened up a whole new world to me. I used to love it. Still watch a fair amount of hockey to this day.
Playing hockey most of my life being from Michigan this brings back memories when i used to play and still feel the injuries till this day lol keep doing what you guys are doing love the videos and if a player gets a stick to the face its a 2 minute penalty for high sticking
I remember playing hockey as a kid, they enforced us to where neck gaurds to prevent our necks from being slit. Very glad I never saw that happen in person but it has happened in the NHL before

4:02 Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals (known to many fans as the "Great 8") is a tough cookie. The slap shots from some of the stronger players are a good 160 km/h. The footage of players going in front of the puck to defend the net are really hard to watch sometimes. Hockey is a brutal sport, but an amazing one to watch.

Hello my NZ friends. I am a hockey historian and have played the game for 56 years and played sem-pro in Europe for 3 years and then coached for 22 years. These types of hits are rare. A team can have 4 or 5 of these hits in a week and then go 4 months without another one. On average there is a big hit once every 3 weeks and often, the player throwing the hit can get a suspension. For instance, targeting the head can get you suspended. Anyway, I am Canadian and am not offended by you calling it "american". Let me know if you want anymore input or answer some of your questions. Cheers. PS. I spent 6 months in NZ in 2011 and loved it. I was in Blenheim on the south island for 4 months and then 2 months on the north island in Auckland.
Using a stick when checking someone is called a cross-check. That results in an automatic penalty of either a 2-minute minor or a 5-minute major depending on the severity.

There was a goalie for the St. Louis Blues whose jugular vein was severed during a game. Both teams medical staff came out onto the ice, pushed him down and applied pressure. Had they been even a few seconds later he would have bled out.
When you see how fast they are going. And see how hard they hit, and they do have people they call enforcers who are the bash brother of the NHL , and a lot of them come in the game to fight.
Some of my favorite memories are going to watch hockey. Best seats are always the ones right up front, next to the glass...but watch out if one of the hits break it!

As somebody that played both sports for a very long time, and I'd say it depends on the hit. in hockey It's not always a head to head collision a lot of times it's from the side or even behind in football you're running straight at each other, also in football its somebody actually planting their feet into the ground, which you cannot do in hockey, and driving the weight of their body through yours! So both sports have some very hard hits but I've definitely been hit harder in football than I have been in Hockey

One of the first rules you learn when you're learning to play hockey is keep your head up
Another one of the first rules when you're learning is how to check properly. Arms in tight, elbows down, shoulder first. That way, the most force is spread over the most area of the opposing player, allowing them to take the check and maybe get knocked down, squished against the boards, or even go flying, but you'll see in most clean hits that the checked player will adjust their helmet, get back on their feet, and keep playing. And often, on really good hip checks or non-interference checks, the checked player will sometimes go to the player that checked them and say "good effort" or "good check" or "playing hard today, eh?" with a smile. The players love going hard, having a good, clean game, and the thrill of the sport.

I’m a Canadian who plays rugby and hockey. Most people in Canada don’t know much about rugby and think that it’s insane rugby players don’t wear equipment. It’s cool to see that you guys have a similar reaction to hockey as most Canadians do to rugby.
As a Canadian i think it's cute when people call it "ice hockey" or " snow skiing " it's just Hockey and Skiing to us. I love other cultures different sayings.

I probably already said it on your other channel, but hockey is one of those games that to fully appreciate, you have got to watch it live. On TV the cameramen are tracking the players, and the puck, so you don't really get a good feel for how fast they are actually going. You might get a slight idea if you try to fix your eyes on something stationary in the video.
There is a lot of fighting in the NHL, less now than in the past but it is still part of the game.
Nothing like it used to be for sure, but it’s picking up this year without fans and playing in division only.

On a work trip to hockey-mad Minnesota, I was talking to someone who was a defenseman in high school. He said he loved playing defense because "every now and then you just have to whale on somebody". That's hockey: fast, athletic, passionate, and full contact.
my brother was a defense when he was in highschool he was 260 6ft tall people flew when he would go clear the corners we only have a 1 year difference i was the goalie laughing my butt of every time. if anybody touched me after the whistle they were dead my entire team jumped them. tip for anybody in hockey don't mess with the guy in the net blocking the shots he is like the teams younger brother touching him is touching the team.

"We're they fighting"? Um yeah they were, that's what A LOT of people watch hockey to see. There are guys on the team's called enforcers and their purpose is their willingness/ability to fight.

As a Michigander, I always love seeing people watch Hockey for the first time. I hope you find some videos of the more technical aspects of the game as well and check that out. The most brutal thing ever witnessed in a hockey game was when a goalie named Clint Malarchuk had his jugular nicked by an upended player. The swift action of the trainer saved his life. He nearly died on the ice.

That was scary but it happend in 1989 ... 32 years ago so it rarely happens.

I was watching that game on tv. For a few seconds the other players continued to battle for puck, not realizing what had just happened. I was also watching the game in which Trent McCleary took a slapshot to the throat, crushing his larynx, which necessitated an emergency tracheotomy and ended his career
It is hard to see just how huge and strong these guys are. Like American Football and Rugby these guys are monsters. They are all well over 6 feet and probably in the 230 lb range. The speed at which these guys are moving, and in opposite directions, creates an impact force that is huge. The athleticism of these guys is amazing. They are indeed well padded up but those outfits are heavy! They are tough dudes you wouldn't want angry at you.

My Dad played 🏒 in the Canadian Minor League Hockey, back in the 60's (before any kind of face shields, and extra padding)...He got hit by a hockey stick, so hard in the chest, and He got a Hiatal Hernia from it, and got His Nose Broken, so many times, that the Nasal Cartilage was so destroyed, that it was completely replaced with plastic (He loved to fight😉)...He still played, until deciding to go to the U.S. and joined the Navy, during Vietnam. The thing with hockey is the speed at which they are moving on the ice. Combined with the size of the players can lead to some large impacts. There have been some rule changes where players cannot directly target another player's head with a body check. Some of the hits in the video were from before that went into effect.

Yes, the physics are insanely fast. Keeping your head on a swivel is imperative. Sometimes the blades hurt players but not often. Hitting with the stick is cross checking and isn't allowed. You'll get a penalty. You can only hit players with the puck or who only just gave it up. Major strategy involves playing the body instead of the puck, especially on defense. It is really hard to time hits well. But done properly, you can really lay someone out

Back in the 1960's before helmets and face guards, hockey was a game of skill. Some of the greatest hockey players are Canadians and it is one of 2 of Canada's national sports. The other is La Crosse. Hockey players to research are Bobby Orr, Bobby Hull, Phil and Tony Esposito and the greatest player was the "Rocket" he played for the Montreal Canadiens.

The best Center Ice Checker I have ever seen was Scott Stevens. EVERYONE always got up and cheered as his checks because in many cases the other guy needed help getting up again or went flying. I remember attending on Washington Capitals game at the Capital Center (RIP) and they were playing their rival Philly. Scott center ice checked a Philly player, and I kid you not, that player went flying a good SIX feet in the air flipping over and slamming onto the ice. The entire arena jumped up and cheered. That was a beautiful sight to see.

hey from Canada . I remember when hockey players had no helmets or faceshields. most the players had no front teeth and many face scars. Do remember 1 player having his throat slashed with a blade . They have cleaned it up lots in the past 30 yrs . helmets, face shields, mouth guards and fighting has been fround on also . What a game from early 70's to see what hockey use to be . Greetings from Canada. I married a Kiwi, (she's been here 22 years now.) I play recreationally 80+ games per year (not during Covid though.) I'm a goalie and my wife could only handle watching me play once... never again. She couldn't stand watching pucks being shot at me. I've never been hurt though. I play "beer league" hockey which means it not such a high level that you can't have some beers after the game, and there's no hitting allowed, (there's plenty of bumping though.) The big hits you saw in that video happen only occasionally. In a typical game there is lots of hitting but mostly not as brutal as the ones in this video. Fighting is a part of the game but it is penalized. You might get one fight per game if you're lucky these days. There used to be a lot of "staged" fights between the two "goons" or tough guys on each team, but it's back to being more spontaneous between two guys who have gotten under each other's skin. If you want to get a feel for the intensity of the playoffs, there's a montage put together by the Canadian broadcaster of the games that captures it pretty well. @@shenran9164 Chances of that happening anymore are slim to none. The worst you'll get is little bits of safety glass in your lap. Nowadays the glass shatters into small dull rock type things, if it shatters at all. And it's most likely going to have to come from a shot that found a corner of the pane where tempered glass has its weak spots. Brute force hits aren't going to break it unless it's been used for a long time and slowly weakened. I've broken one pane in my life. I was at an open hockey session and my shot hit the crossbar and then the very top edge of the glass. Shattered but stayed together.

I grew up in the south so didn’t know much about hockey. Then I moved to Michigan and got totally sucked in to the Detroit Red Wings. My son is still a fan even though we live in Colorado now.

If you guys wanna see some hard hits I highly recommend a Scott Stevens compilation. He had a reputation for being one of the most feared hitters. Even shortening careers because of his hits.
Pretty sure he is safe bet for top spot in most feared category. Lindros was a big dude to flatten like Steven's did. And he probably ended more careers than anyone. When headhunting was an artform.

We have a saying in the U.S., probably Canada too, "went to a fight and a hockey game broke out".
Funny story…so, I grew up in rural northern Oklahoma. On the southern Great Plains. Far from any ice rinks. Lol. We couldn’t get cable when I was a kid, so we had a giant old C-band satellite dish to get pay channels outside of what our antenna could bring in over-the-air. This allowed me to be able to pick up CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) stations coming out of Canada and watch the old-school Molson Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts. Which is roughly the Canadian equivalent of Monday Night Football or Sunday Night Football here in the States. Big-time TV sports. Hockey is not a very popular sport in the southern United States, so it opened up a whole new world to me. I used to love it. Still watch a fair amount of hockey to this day.

I remember playing hockey as a kid, they enforced us to where neck gaurds to prevent our necks from being slit. Very glad I never saw that happen in person but it has happened in the NHL before

4:02 Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals (known to many fans as the "Great 8") is a tough cookie. The slap shots from some of the stronger players are a good 160 km/h. The footage of players going in front of the puck to defend the net are really hard to watch sometimes. Hockey is a brutal sport, but an amazing one to watch.
This might be a brutal one to watch, but the amount of courage these players have to keep their goalie from being scored on is immense.

Your New Zealand Family hockey is the best! It is the only sport I watch. I go to our local Hockey team to watch. Our league is a step below professional hockey. We are also the only American team in the Canadian circuit.

An interesting set of videos to watch is a tour of Antelope Valley, The Wave, and Slot Canyon. All in the Northern Arizona area. Beautiful color and twisted rock. Reservations have been up to a year in advance to tour.

You should watch compilations from @CanucksFan27. That "bee sting" hit from P.K. Hello my NZ friends. I am a hockey historian and have played the game for 56 years and played sem-pro in Europe for 3 years and then coached for 22 years. These types of hits are rare. A team can have 4 or 5 of these hits in a week and then go 4 months without another one. On average there is a big hit once every 3 weeks and often, the player throwing the hit can get a suspension. For instance, targeting the head can get you suspended. Anyway, I am Canadian and am not offended by you calling it "american". Let me know if you want anymore input or answer some of your questions. Cheers. PS. I spent 6 months in NZ in 2011 and loved it. I was in Blenheim on the south island for 4 months and then 2 months on the north island in Auckland.

There was a goalie for the St. Louis Blues whose jugular vein was severed during a game. Both teams medical staff came out onto the ice, pushed him down and applied pressure. Had they been even a few seconds later he would have bled out.
When you see how fast they are going. And see how hard they hit, and they do have people they call enforcers who are the bash brother of the NHL , and a lot of them come in the game to fight.
