- "When you've got a keeper like that in your team you can gain extra points. He was an outstanding goalkeeper and was very important to us" (Kevin Ratcliffe about Neville Southall)
Music: Lifelike - So Electric
An absolutely incredible goalkeeper, genuinely one of the greatest ever in my opinion.
F-Blaster thoroughly agree there
I would say that he’s the best I’ve ever seen. I’ve been watching football since 1984 and I’ve never seen a better shot stopper.
No doubt top 5 of all Time greats
@@osmotapioraihala643 Neville Southall
Been watching football since 1970 and he was the best I've ever seen
Needs a legend card on Fifa
Doesn't get the recognition unfortunately. Had Wales produced anywhere near a decent squad for major tournaments, and had English clubs not been banned from European competitions, he'd have had his chance to shine.
Best footwork in the business a true legend and I’m a red. Big nev was world class
In the top 10 goalkeepers of all time and was the best goalie in the world at his peak. A top man as well, with strong values.
Fantastic bloke
Im 65 this year watched football all my life , he is the best goalkeeper I have ever seen, by a mile
He’s from my town I see him regular
Top bloke too by all accounts
Big Nev is easily in the top 10 keepers of all time. He was so athletic, accurate with his distribution.. and probably the best shot stopper I've ever seen. And I'm a Liverpool fan.
I was too young to understand when he was playing. If you had to compare him to a gk now, who would it be?
@@Strikingathlete01you couldn’t
@@Sutty0151 Surely there's a player with at least his style, mate.
@@Strikingathlete01 maybe somewhere out there someone might be but if so I haven’t heard of him or seen him mate big nev is the best I’ve layed eyes on
Never got the true recognition he deserved. In his prime the best ever in my opinion, one of a kind.
I always get goosebumps watching big Nev. In his day, there was nobody better in the world!
Dad and Grandad die hard reds.. but would always say southall was the best kepper they ever seen.. i was born in 79 and growing up as a blue.. Southall was my idol. never got the credit he deserved.. anyone who knew him as a keeper would find it hard to pick any other to replace him.. absolute legend
HE WAS SIMPLY nil satis nisi optimum BETTER THEN ALL THE REST
@@garypring2658Il avait été très bon contre le Brésil (c'est la première fois que je voyais
son nom) et le Bayern.
i rem watching him as a kid and thinking then his reaction times were supernatural, some of his saves are ingrained into my memory, so quick.
That's the exact word...supernatural.
Best British goalie of the last fifty years without a shadow of a doubt. I would also say he's the best top flight goalie of the last fifty years too.If I were to pick a best of British team over the last 40 years, there are two names who I would not have to even think about Neville in goal and Bryan Robson as captain.
Never gets the credit he deserves. One of the greatest keepers in the world!
I always used to be Big Nev when i was in goal as a kid! My mates used to be David Seaman or Peter Schmeichel but Southall was the greatest in my eyes as a young Welshman! Superb goalkeeper
As a Man Utd supporter he’s one of the best goalkeepers I’ve ever seen ! So much respect for Nevill Southall ❤️
Norman Whiteside said it was a great thrill to score past the world's best in the '85 final.
I wasn't born during his playing days. How good is good?
The Best.. he never got to do it in europe on a reg basis... so was not given the stage to show the world.. but anyone who was alive in his time.. will say the same thing.. best keeper of his generation.. i would say one of the best of all time. @@Strikingathlete01
@@Strikingathlete01 Still better than any English goalies in the 90's and early 00's (Seaman, Walker, James, etc.)
Jesus I've got goose pimples watching this machine. ( Is he human) .
Non Mentioned A family man who didn't want to go away from the UK- He is the best goalie ( in 40 years) I have ever seen. And my 85 year old football obsessed father agrees. Shame he wasn't around in Ronaldo era. He is incredibly hypervigilant human
English leagues have had some fantastic keepers and some great characters especially during the seventies & eighties. Big Nev the absolute best. In his prime the best in the world. Not a keeper today fit to hold his gloves.
I'm not a Everton fan but he was the best I have ever seen
Amazing keeper in one of my most favourite teams of the 80s. Read what he is up to now. Just as inspiring.
unknow goalkeeper for almost all southamerica. I have shocked with some of his saves, he really deserb more respect for sure.
In the same way but in reverse, Ubaldo Fillol is very underrated outside of South America and I can guarantee you that he is the best goalkeeper in the entire history of Argentina and the top 5 of all history.
Best goalie, along with Jennings, I've seen, he mustve saved Everton so many points.
earned.
Big Nev and Schmeical the last of the truly great keepers
One of the best keepers of all time
Y Cymro and always played with great sportsmanship and a smile
Welsh AND Evertonian. A win win combination!
Without a doubt, one of the greatest goalkeepers ever. One of my favourites. Unluckily, not too well known outside Great Britain.
That’s because Liverpool got English teams banned from Europe
One of the top 5 ever, and by far the best I’ve ever seen in the flesh. Saw Shilton and Clemence, but Nev was ahead of them by quite a way… great reflexes and held on to so much of what was fired at him or crossed into his box.
I rember watching a game at Goodsion between Everton and Manchester United not long after they had signed Smicheal ....I can remember thinking that Smicheal was the 2nd best keeper I'd ever seen at Goodsion , after Nev .....and still by a mile . That kind of sums up just how good he was .....Bonus points for being able to clearly hear him screaming at his back four over ghe crowd.
Southall definitely one of the all-time goalkeeping greats, up there with Yashin, Banks, Jennings, Zoff, Maier and Schmeichel.
Some of his saves in this clip were phonomenal.
It's such a shame that Wales never made it to a major tournament when he was at his peak, plus that great Everton side only had one season playing in Europe due to ban on English clubs in 1985.
Agree but can't miss Ubaldo Fillol in that list. Just take a look of his saves are insane.
@@Franco.Adrian.Tortora Add Trautmann
Add José Ángel Iribar
A Montage of Big Nev if he played 20 years later would be a template for any keeper. Many of his best performances are not recorded. I saw Shilton Seaman Schmichael Cech in the flesh. All great but Big Nev was slightly better - very slightly. I never saw Dasayev mind
schmeichel vs southall. thats a tough one
@@jackkenefick2696 Neville Southall was much more consistent. Neville didn't blame his defenders for his own mistakes which Peter Schmeichel often did.
Shilton was way overrated
Much better keeper than Dasaev who was a great shot stopper but could be dodgy on crosses
@@baslongstaff1819 Without question. Nev would never have fu//cked up against Maradona for a start.
Remarkable goalkeeper who never gets a mention today...and in UK there are MANY goalkeepers such as Southall
Quite simply the best keeper in the world back in the 80's without question
Even Beckenbauer said so.
Best keeper in the world!!!
🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I agree he was the best in the world 🌎
@@pincopallino. Then who would you have? I'm English yet there is no chance I'm placing Shilton above him, no way.
@@pincopallino. Unless......oh god. Tell me you're not thinking of Bruce Grobbelaar?
Why did I never heard of this goalkeeper ?? He seems to be excellent, even at today's standards ! As a french, we were told that goalkeepers in the Premier League at that time were crap...obviously not ;) Cheers to all football lovers
Before Premier League.
Thing i remember about him was he didnt just pull off save after save he never made errors. Cant ever recall him dropping a cross. One of the best keepers of all time.
So so so so right.
The MOST important thing about a keeper
Legend thanks for those Everton days Nev
For me the most naturally gifted shot stopper I've never seen..doesn't necessarily mean best all round keeper but natural shot stopping ability? Name me someone better ?
That Wales team he played in always had me scratching my head. Himself, Hughes, Rush, Saunders, Ratcliffe ……. never did anything of great note. So much less than the sum of its parts. Fab keeper
Simply the best in the world for me, im yet to see anything better than big Nev.
One of the greatest. Many of those saves would win save of the season nowadays. He caught shots that every top level keeper nowadays would push/punch away. Incredible reactions, covered every part of the goal and brilliant in 1-1 situations apart from against Rushy!!
What an absolute legend! Yes I say that as an Everton fan of 40+ years but having Big Nev in goal was like having an extra player or two on the team because he was so good in goal.I really do like this video and the music is absolutely perfect and has an 80s feel to it too which fits well with the 80s decade when Neville was at his best!
Watched this video three times tonight already
Love the fact that Big Nev would catch the ball a lot - Pickford is a good keeper but he rarely catches the ball from a cross or a shot.
Im a Burnley Fan (Someone has to be LOL)..Ive always thought Big Nev was a great Keeper. The confidence the players must have had with him at the back of your defence..In my opinion he wasn't only one of the best in this Country, but World Class.. Charismatic, commanded the whole area, brave ,great shot-stopper, one of of the safest pair of hands a Keeper could have..I put him up there with Shilton and Jennings..Kevin Ratcliffe has got it bang on.. Thanks Barbosa for this excellent video. Tony.
Thank you very much, Tony!
Your welcome Barbosa..His team mates expected that performance week in week out..35 seconds unbelievable!! 1 minute his team mates smother him. which rarely happened, cos they expected great performances. A total legend, wish we had, had him at Burnley. Love your video's. Have a good week Tony.
well said mate. NSNO
I would, without question, have him in my team rather than Shilton. I would even put him above Jennings
@@spanishpeaches2930 Miles better than Shilton who was massively overrated, hence the reason none of the big clubs touched him
Love this guy was my idol and inspiration and still I reckon this guy was the best keeper I've ever seen
Arguably the best keeper ever.
My favourite goalkeeper.
What gets me is the sheer power he gets on the ball. Shots are absoloutely fizzing into the corner and he still manages to fling them out of the box
and sometimes you even see him make the save as a pass to the nearest defender. Beyond goalkeeping
The greatest goalkeeper ever.
Best keeper I've ever seen still to this day.
Big Nev was bloody brilliant. A true proffesional. As a kid in the 80's i was a keeper in the school team and also in a saturday team. I looked up to Neville, he was fearless. As a young keeper he was the one i loved most. I had a VHS video called "101 Great saves" and i watched it so many times, there was plenty of southhall saves on that video. Actually, i would not be surprised if that video is here on YT.
FWA player of the year in 85....by the players....enough said. Legend.
Errr, the FWA is not voted on by players, but by football writers.
Makes Shilton and Clemence look like laurel and hardy
Absolutely brilliant keeper all time favourite player
Old enough to remember his inauspicious early days, especially the 5-0 drubbing in the Derby I watched from the Main Stand. Arnold came back and was solid but unremarkable. Southall got back in the 1 jersey and made it his own. Fitting swansong to lift the FA Cup after years of service to Everton. Best goalie I saw live.
Are you watching this Jordan Pickford. This is world class goalkeeping from big Neville southhall superb
One of the greatest ever, living in South Africa in a time where we were not allowed to watch this my dad use to take us to watch this 'underground' and this dude was 1 of the greatest keepers ever, GGMU for life but the rivalry between Everton and that other team was great and Southall stood out head and shoulders above the rest
Why is he not in FUT as an Icon?
Enda Farrell He’s in pes.
Enda Farrell init
Because it seems like everything to do with football doesn’t like Everton, which is sad.
I think he definitely should be, but think I know reasons why: Wales sadly never made it to World Cup or European championships when he was playing, and also, that great Everton side were only able to play European football for one season before the ban in 1985. If they had, they would have won European Cup at least once, no question.
That said, he should definitely be in there, he was without doubt one of the all-time goalkeeping greats, but he just never had real opportunity to perform at major international stage through no fault of his own.
I'm a lifelong Liverpool supporter and loved the old rivalry when LFC and Everton were the best 2 team in England. I wish Big Nev had played in our team though! Notice how he wasn't just an incredible shot stopper but more often that saved football stuck to his hands like glue, not like today. And that was in the muddy swamps that football pitches used to be like. Huge respect!
COYB.... I was there, home and away. UTFT
Greatest keeper in the world.
Amazing keeper, saves from some of the best strikers of the era.
What I love about his goalkeeping is that he always tried to catch long and short range shots where possible. No over the top diving for the cameras.
When it looked over the top its coz it had to be to get there
Exactly, so you know when he punched, parried or tipped it was a really decent saved. He trained like an absolute beast too.
How did some of those not go in...🤔
Stunning stuff!
Belive me or not, he's my grandad
Mazaquatic brilliant keeper you must be proud
Having a knighted footballing legend for a grandfather must be pretty damn awesome! ❤
@Prince Rupert reds respect too
I loved this man the best keeper in the world, dont even think there are many that can touch him today, you must be very proud.
He was and still is the best goalkeeper through the 80/90's...
What a keeper he was thee best in his day , excellent goal keeping displays he kept out so many goal opportunities winning Everton the league twice , with great displays of goal keeping .
Footwork and reading of the game made him world class keeper still played in his 40s probably Everton's best player ever
Best keeper I have ever watched !!!!
Spent a lot of my youth behind the goal, gobsmacked at how a big man could
move the way he did. Little known fact, Nev would bike it home after a match on a pedal bike, and that was from Liverpool to Wales.
A shame he never went to an international tournament with Wales. They had some quality players in his day.
If there was ever an all time XI of greatest players who never had chance to play in a major international tournament (i.e World Cup or European Championships) , Southall would be goalkeeper, no question.
It would be some team to choose : Sammi Hyppia, Liam Brady, Ryan Giggs, Kinkladze, George Weah, Jari Litmanen, Ian Rush, George Best....
...and Eric Cantona, Bernd Schuster, Alfredo Di Stefano, Eduard Streltsov, Laszlo Kubala...
Barbosa Fútbol Videos Didn’t Schuster not play in 1980 European championships?
@@velouris76 Schuster was a rebel, hard to manage. Yes, he was an important part of Germany success at Euro 82. But he could have helped Germany to win WC 82 and 86. He refused to play for his own reasons.
What a superb goalkeeper Nev was , you knew you were in safe hands with him in goal. Shame to see him now with alot of added weight.
As a Man Utd fan..he is way way way better than David de Gea. DdG maybe agile shot stopper but he is not great on crosses, not vocal enough and frankly a coward in confronting opponents in physical battles.
Always loved watching big Nev, phenomenal keeper. Came here after reading an article about him this morning. Used to always say that goal scorers get the points, but many points was big Nev worth each season?
Probably the safest pair of hands during the eighties, it didn't matter who blasted
the ball at him, it hardly ever fell from his grasp. I heard his gloves were special
and made by Bostik.
What a keeper! Outstanding in every aspect of his game and a true gentleman.
Everton was the only team I supported when I first watched football as a kid & through my childhood.. glad that I witnessed the golden era of Everton with Southhall, Steven , Stevens , Sharp, Sheedy...
You had the 5 S. I add the 3 P : Pat, Paul and Peter, also the 2 A : Andy and Adrian, and a single D : Derek. You know them, right ?
Same for me but he was the hero I admired most
I used to enjoy turning up early to watch him between the sticks in the warm up.
Best keeper that has ever lived……. Period.
To me every good as clemence and shilton but not talked in the same breath. His reflexes are stunning and made great saves look routine.
The master of his trade.legendary in the true sense.
So here we are at 7:15am on the final day of the 22/23 season and we Everton are to play Bournemouth and must win if we are to avoid relegation AGAIN 2 seasons in a row we are fighting for our lives to stay in the division what we would give to have Neville in goal and Dixie Dean upfront instead we are left with a group of players who are championship fodder! If we are relegated the pain and sorrow will be extreme and our 70+ years in the top flight will be gone and could very well see us in the second division for many years to come.COME ON EVERTON ONE LAST PUSH FOR SURVIVAL …UP THE TOFFEES!
Back in the days when goalkeepers weren't faking it to make it look harder than it actually is.
Who fakes it to make it look harder than it actually is?🤣
@@beetouut466 It's called "TV-Save" where I come from.
@@tntfreddan3138 I havent seen a keeper recently do an over the top save just ro make it look good lol
We live in an era of overwhelming recency bias, whereby, these kids (and lots of grownups, even) from these modern generations only claim the players they have seen play to be the "GOAT" and will argue and belittle you to death if you dare present any other player as a rebuttal. That being said, I'll avoid any subsequent voices of dissent to just comment that, of all the goalkeepers that I have on my list of all-time greats, Bodo Illgner is absolutely one of my favorites of all time. As is the likes of Neville Southall.
One of the best goalkeepers in the world.
£100 million signing in todays money
More double stops than a Jimi Hendrix solo jam.. if big Nev was English we'd have more world cups !
True Football...true men..
One of the GOATs, turned down offers from Real Madrid. Though i think if he went to Real he'd get the recognition he deserves
Quality keeper, in any era
I remember watching this guy towards his last years at Everton, he's one of the reasons I enjoyed playing GK down the park and became a half decent keeper between two "jumpers".
Hes like a fucking cat or something, bignev was something else la. Defo one of my favourite players as a kid and probably one of the best of all time
Excellent goelkepper. 😉🎖️🏆🔥🥇🥇👍
Outstanding goalkeeper 👍
Amazing video as always.
I hope you start uploading more.
Thank you
Best keeper ever period
My boyhood hero. Would anyone else agree with me that Neville Southall and George Best are probably the 2 most gifted players to never play in a World Cup? ...... A non-World Cup "Best Eleven" would make an interesting debate.
Best non-World Cup footballers, very interesting: of course also Di Stefano, Cantona, Weah, Giggs, Brady and many others
He's in the top two with Peter Schmeichel. Peter shades it but Id rather have a chat with Neville
Would be worth 80 million in today's market.
2:25 Unbelieveable.
Not just the saves it's where the ball ends up after it away from danger
If he had played for england national team during 80's instead of shilton then bobby robson's side would defineatly had at least a world cup or euro final ..may be the cup :)...
Stupid comment - ifs, buts, and maybes are pointless in football - well life in general tbh.
If your Auntie had balls she'd be your Uncle.
No... at WC 82, England was unbeaten. But they were toothless in the 2nd group round, causing West Germany to go through.
He was the Lev Yashin of his time...
omg... i don't know for whom to react.. is it for the people who trying some brilliant attempts or for the person who is SAVING those... thanks for the video
