Link to buy these CD Wallets: amzn.to/3rTwoZt
And these are the boxes I've used: amzn.to/3sNgqPO
If you thinking of doing this please make sure that wallets you use are NOT made from PVC as this can lead to disc damage eventually. POLYPROPYLENE is safe.

I have nothing against buying new jewel cases if the previous ones are damaged. I know people like the old smooth sided cases from the 1980s though. I don't really care as long as the discs are safe.
And I " upgraded" all those Beatles remasters from a decade back as well as the Beatles Capital albums sets by putting them safely into shiny new CD jewel cases.
also I just hate more than one CD in a case so if I get a double set I will put them into separate cases.

@@phillipanderson7398 Yes, I agree with you.
Did you put the Beatles remaster discs in new cases because the original jewel cases are damaged? I hope so, otherwise there's no point.
Regarding placing two or more discs in the cases, there are double or multi disc jewel cases available in the market which will suit your needs.

@@janath9118 The Beatles remaster discs did not come in jewel cases. They were in glossy cardboard digi-paks, I put the remastered discs ( and any albums that come in mini LP cardboard covers like the Beatles Capital Albums sets) into new jewel cases I bought at the local Officeworks store.
As for the mutli disc jewel cases I was saying that I don't like them. I always prefer single disc jewel cases. The only exception is " fat boy" multi jewel cases where I am ok with these cases that hold two discs and in some cases three or four discs.

@Andrew Dixon I, too, have recently gone this route for both my CDs and DVDs. I have no regrets. It actually makes me appreciate my collection a bit more. I have about 1500 CDs and I used an intermediate solution: I placed in the thin sleeves only front cover and CD. I left back cover in the jewel case, and stored all jewel cases in boxes in the attic. That way, each CD still has his original jewel case, in case I want to recompose it, or sell it. Jewel cases have changed over the years, some have stickers particular to the CDs, so I like to be able to match CDs and jewel cases, just in case. Anyway, storage saving is about a factor of 4!

    • @janath9118
      @janath9118 2 года назад +3

If you are keeping the back covers of CD's stored seperately with the jewel cases, how are you supposed to read or refer the song lists and other important details when playing those CD's? That's absurd. There's no meaning to whatever you did. If the point here is to save the space, you can leave out the jewel cases but it's necessary to keep at least both front and back covers together.

  • @rle440

I did this several years ago and I regretted it not long afterwards. I’ve bought many jewel cases and replacement CDs over the last couple of years to undo my mistake. I think that many people would like your method for storage purposes and if they aren’t attached to the original style packaging.

  • @CBT5777

The jewel case is a part of history. It was what we got our cds in. If you want to be true to your collection, keep them in jewel cases. You wouldn't treat your vinyl any different. Keep your media true to the way they were originally released. Thats my opinion.

  • @SeventhMooStudio

I went this same route at the beginning of last year. The amount of space it saved was amazing, but, in the end, I thought it looked too messy and not all of the spines were easily readable. Plus, I still had my digi-paks in the alphabetical mix every so often. After about four months, I went back to jewel cases. I just really like the look and (somewhat) uniformity of those plastic cases.

All my movies took up more than an entire rack but now they're down to just a few plastic bins on the shelf. One thing I did was to make some alphabetical index cards so I just look for the tab sticking out to find what I'm looking for quicker. I may just have to consider this for my CDs now as well.

There is a slightly different version of the sleeves you have which require the spine to be folded inward as opposed to outward. They are made by 3L and available on Amazon. I’ve done it, saves a ton of space. I still keep my favourite albums in jewel cases. So I have a mix of sleeves and jewel stored in separate shelving. There is also a feeling of replicating a vinyl collection with those sleeves which is weirdly satisfying, and it often brings to life the artwork after years of living behind scratched, brittle, often broken jewel cases. In fact the only advantage of a jewel case is the visibility of the spine.

I would never ever get rid of my Jewel Cases. No way. I put them in resealable PVC sleeves to keep them in the best possible condition and to protect them from dust, fingerprints etc. If a Jewel Case has scratches etc., I replace it. For me, it`s part of the package.

I can understand the idea of it from a space saving perspective, but doing away with the jewel cases takes away that physical protection for the CD and cheapens the whole thing in my opinion. I'd never get rid of my jewel cases. In particular some of the ones from early 80's releases with the opaque edges are collectors items. They are hard to come by and the ones I own are my most treasured.

I started a similar thing a few years ago for space saving reasons with CDs that I’m less attached to (I’m not really one for selling on my music). My original intent was for it to be a temporary solution in that if I ever moved to somewhere with more room I would revert back to cases. I did have that “will I regret it” but happy enough considering I’ve only done it with a certain percentage of the collection (I reckon 40%, 220 CDs)
One exception is my sleeves only hold the CD/booklet so I have to store the back inlets in one of those accordion folders. So, glad you found sleeves which take all the paperwork. Someone above mentioned a “shoebox” solution: I use a “Really Useful Box” (look up the 6.5 litre version) which typically holds 36 CDs. I managed to fit 130 albums into one box with plenty of room to spare. It could probably take 170-180 if pushed. I find by having them in this box, it recreates that feeling of flicking from front to back

I had 3 options: 1) Stop collecting, sell part of the collection or replace the jewelcases. In the beginning it was hard but I got used to it pretty quickly. Last year I had to move to a smaller apartment and I was glad I done it. Now I have a 6000 cd collection in 3 shelves so I can double it with my 3 empty shelves.

In the 90s I swapped some 2-CD fat boxes with slim 2-CD cases that are sized like the regular jewel cases. But I changed my mind about that years ago, I put those double albums back into CD fat boxes to have them just the way they were originally released. In fact I actually prefer fat boxes for double albums (for example for the 1993 Beatles Red & Blue Album, the 1987 White Album etc.) For me, CDs with jewel cases are like books on the shelf, I love to look at the complete collection, being able to spot and find everything at once and to see the collection grow. I don`t want to flip through them like index cards in a box or CDs in a CD pocket album.

I've seen comments from other CD collectors that claim they want to preserve the original jewel case as-is for collector value moving forward. One guy claiming scuffs and scratches on the OEM jewel case, even if an industry standard case with no special markings or colors, would degrade the value of a collectible CD.
I say just replace a damaged standard case with another. Don't know how anyone would be able to tell the difference, again assuming no special non standard molded in markings or colors.
IMO, standard unmarked stock jewel cases, either black/gray tray or clear tray, shouldn't improve the value of a typical single or double CD. The long term value is in the physical disc, front book and tray insert, and O-ring or other non-standard-jewel-case packaging.
The jewel case *may* have longer term value if it has non standard markings (besides the standard Compact Disc logo), printed or molded in.
For example, some CD's come with transparent but color tinted jewel cases (Mickey Hart CD's), or custom colored trays that hold the CD REM MOnster = orange), or the music label logo molded into the back tray of the case (I have some with Warner logo molded into jewel case back). I keep these either in tact, or if I repackage the CD to save space, put the jewel case away in a storage box in an attic/garage where it will be dry at least, though temps and humidity may be an issue.

I have a collection of more than 5000 Compact Discs but I do not like the idea of removing the jewel cases of the CD's. Although it's a practical way to save storage space, it is not a wise idea. The main purpose of the jewel cases is to keep the CD's inside them to protect them from dust, dirt or any other substance, and to protect them from any scratches or shocks. If the jewel cases are removed the storage space can be saved but it will compromise or lose the protection of the valuable CD's. If the CD's are kept this way inside the thin polythene cases, the CD's can easily get soiled or scratched by fingers when taking them out or replacing them back, and this cannot be avoided. The value of the album artworks will also lose if the jewel cases are removed. So its always vital to keep the CD's in their properly designed jewel cases due to these sentimental reasons.
So I will not recommend this method of storing CD's to anybody else if they want to preserve their disc collection well. But there is only one option left, if somebody is running out of space to store CD's the proper way, they can adopt this method only to keep their less favoured or mediocre CD's.

It's very nice to see that you too are doing just the same thing with your CD collection as what I've already been doing for years! with my own CD collection! because in that way you really save a lot of space! although those plastic sleeves that you bought are a little bit too expensive in your place! since in my place which is in Mexico City you could get 100 pack of those plastc sleeves for a little as less than just $2 US dollars in the legal market! and that cost could even go down to just $1 US dollar! on the street markets that don't pay taxes!

No no no and no! I understand though. I live in a small one room apartment with the ongoing issue of fighting for room/space . I have CD 💿 wallets filled with CDs 💿; however, the CDs 💿 are from cardboard digisleeve cases, to protect the CDs from scratching. But I still have the cases. I did the similar thing but with DVD/Blu-ray movies/ TV shows. Disposed the cases. I deeply regret it. I love the appearance of having a collection of original material. Although it takes up room. Keep the jewel cases!

I think it's a great solution. Sometimes with Jewel Cases it's difficult to remove/insert a booklet causing fraying/creasing etc. If you drop one on a hard surface there go the lugs! Someone suggested the Mini Japanese "LP's" which are great but expensive, also not sure if their catalogue is that broad. I'll be following suit for space reasons and no more broken scratched Jewell Cases.

I've done this about 20 years ago when I had to shift house. I'm saving a lot of space but hygiene is important, i.e, clean discs and inserts. I've decided to put the flap at the bottom so dust doesn't settle where there's an opening. I do regret getting rid of some special jewel cases though, for example, Madonna's Bedtime Stories, as it was part of the album design. Something to keep in mind :)

I was a just as apprehensive when I decided to go down this route, but it was the best thing I have ever done, I only have 150 CD's (so far) and I used the offerings from 3L, I purchased the sleeves, a pack of inner sleeves (really soft), and a couple of storage boxes which seemed a little cheaper than Amazon when I purchased them. They have great customer service. which is easily contactable, Danish in origin and supplied in the UK from Oxfordshire. They may turn out at times to be a little dearer than Amazon, but the ability to talk to a human being at times is worth it. No I'm not connected with the company, I offer it as an alternative to the Amazon Juggernaut.
Anyhow that aside the space saved is worth it, I've indexed the boxes and finding what I want is so easy, I love the way they look like Mini LP's. Like yourself I have cardboard sleeves, and even they fit in the pouches just great, the Inner's I have will take 2 CD's and it still fits in the outer sleeve. I have a few triple albums, and box sets I've left them as is. As usual there are always the Albums that are produced that will benefit from leaving as is. The point is the only thing we are discarding is the jewel case, and allowing more space to dedicated to the collection.

That’s a terrible idea Andrew. Apart from devaluing the CDs and making them harder to find by not revealing the spines anymore, you have to ask yourself is the space worth more than your collection itself? I think not, the answer is: find more space or sell the CDs you don’t listen to anymore!

Hi Andrew, I have considered something similar myself but have always steered away from it by and large. Whilst I hold no sentimental attachment to the cases themselves necessarily, I do feel I would miss being able to see my whole collection at a glance and making listening choices from that. I do however have a large cd wallet holder where I place older issues of albums that I have since duplicated, keeping the covers and booklets too - this created quite a bit of space and didn’t bother me at all. I have a couple of hundred cd's stacked in this way. The only problem I encountered with plastic CD sleeves is that some stick to the CD and might partly tear off the printed label. But as long as you make sure you put the cd itself between the booklet/front cover and the back-cover, you'll be just fine. (For safety reasons you can put the cd in a paper sleeve and put that into your plastic sleeve, but that's some extra money and time...;) )
It's a bit more harder to find a cd, but you can grab a bunch of them and swipe through that quite easily. But it's a great way of saving space (and for dvd's/blu rays even more).
