😂 Portuguese have a saying "When the benefits are too big, people shouldn't trust" ....I understood the meaning of that after living in the country a couple of years. As for safe, that lies in the fact most things don't make the news ...just last week they found parts of a man's body chopped up in the trash in Lapa Neighbourhood - the chic Lisbon neighbourhood.....let your mind wonder what goes on elsewhere then.
Save your money and your effort.
Portugal is wonderful for vacations and that's it.

Expat of 13 years in Thailand here.
You absolutely can get permanent residency in Thailand. :)
The main way to do it, aside from marrying a Thai, is to be 'hired' by a thai company that specializes in this kind of thing. There are a few here including Iglu and Shelter. You pay them to their offshore bank account and they pay you your thai salary minus fees. If you do this for 3 years straight with a minimum salary requirement then you're eligible to apply for PR. It's granted based on a points system but is fairly easy to get. You need to renew it yearly so you have to be in Thailand at least one day per year or you will lose it. After 5 years of being a permanent resident you can apply for citizenship. It's based on essentially the same points system but is much stricter and you need to speak read and write Thai fluently.
Overall it's a hassle, it'll cost you about $15k - $30k when all is said and done. But if you plan to make Thailand home base as many have then it might be worth playing that long game.
As Rafael pointed out, Malaysia is not nearly as liveable as Thailand, nor is any other country that I've been to. Not even close.

It is easier to naturalize as a Thai citizen if you are married to a Thai national, but I know at least one dual American and Thai citizen who is a n RUclips that is an attorney in the US who works with a Thai immigration law firm advising clients in Thailand about US immigration and helping his Thai associates help English speaking clients with Thai immigration and naturalization issues. I have seen a few other Western RUclipsrs who have naturalized in Thailand, so it is possible to obtain Thai citizenship.
