Love Matt, but now that Meta is sponsoring I’m sure he won’t correct the misnomer sadly, so here’s my regular correction, llama is NOT open source. It does NOT match the requirements to be open source. I wish we would accurately report.
Thank you for this information - I had no idea it wasn’t truly open source.
To be fair, almost all of the licenses on "open-source" models have stipulations on their use. However, please correct me if I am wrong but, 1. unlike "ClosedAI", we have access to the source code and in may be modified and fine tuned 2. Almost every "open-source" model out there does not really meet the complete definition of open-source. The main restriction I am aware of is the Llama 1 did not allow commercial use yet, Llama 2 had a more permissive license that allowed commercial use up to a certain number of customer base and then their is a fee. Take this in contrast to Google who has a more restrictive license I believe than Meta on their "open-source". Finally look at the Llama models and compare them to Chat-GPT 4 and beyond, relatively speaking, the Meta model also can be ran completely local. So, no. the Meta model does not cross off every requirement of the open source definition. However, imagine where we would be stuck if we didn't have semi-open-source models and were stuck with just the strictly closed source models?
