I have to say that Scott is one of the few people I have seen who, when it comes to suggesting pens, does NOT throw pigma microns at one's face immediately. Not that I am complaining. 8 years later: It depends on how "heavy" your hand is and how abrasive your paper / substrate is. Copic fineliner on PET drafting film will wear out very quickly, while Faber Castells or pigmented Eddings (yes, these do exist in some markets will hold up much better). Pigmented PILOTs (blue body) are long-lasting and quite easy to find in most regions of the world and my standard pen for about 20 years now (working on layout and copier paper).
The best, by my own opinion wouldn't be none. There are many unpractical books, and those that are practical have different approaches in some techniques and perspective problems. Also not all of them go through the same topics. It's better if you see different perspective drawing books and not conforming with a single one if you want to have a full comprehension on perspective. My personal favorites are perspective science: theory and application by dhirgham murran. Perspective for architects from georg schaarwachter, perspective drawing: step by step by michael helms (this ones are a bit advanced for the newcomer, I recommend in this case the books from joseph d amelio, Ernest norling and philip j. lawson first). Still this are for practical methodology and proper results. How to draw from Scott Robertson ends up being the right learning tool to fast execute convincing and accurate perspective drawings. When the results, while not being as rigorous as doing measures and technical constructions, are just as effective in creating a believable image (this achieved with mental and eye training, or with some visual and image aid), is more convenient in order to save time and gain more mental drawing skills.

That goes for both technically produced perspective (which was the drafters way of portraying proyects of buildings, machines and in cases paintings as those of Keith Ferris on aviation art) and loose freehand perspective. The approach from the first has faded away by the arrival of CAD and computer graphics, and It had been struggling even since photography technology was developing. BUT it remains being the analogous way of achieving precise 3D representations, Ive to add its use was mostly in cases of just conceived proyects that had yet to transcend into reality (but still needed a compelling visual representation, being used oftenly on the field of technical illustration for manuals, blueprints, etc) I spent 2 years to definitively grasp Just linear perspective, as curvilinear perspective is a complete new level on execution and correctness.

I was wondering how to draw ellipses correctly WITH some fundamentals (I guess this word can be the wrong one, but I didn't find another) and I have searched all over the internet for that. When I saw this, it seemed so simple and obvious that I became ashamed of myself... hahahahaha... I think that a good teacher make every knowledge simple to be understood. Great work! Congrats! Scott Robertson My big question is about moving the paper to draw your straight lines or your ellipses. It makes great sense to do this so that you don't have to learn to draw from these infinite vectors. But, what about when you can't turn your canvas? Say on an easel or a Wacom tablet. What do you do then? Maybe they just don't show it in videos but, when I watch someone doing a digital drawing on youtube I don't see them rotating the image on screen. And, it seems like it would be very difficult to turn a tablet. So do these rules only apply to small canvases? My other question, that no one mentions, in the beginner's guide videos I've looked at, is when to use your shoulder/elbow to draw and when/if to use your wrist or fingers. From comments I've seen it seems people advocate shoulder and elbow for bigger work and wrist/fingers for very small things. Do you follow this philosophy?
There's one technique I always go back to in these situations. Start with a box, that will contain the ellipse. Think about where the minor and major axis' will be. That will roughly be a + shape that intersects the middle of your box but don't draw them lines. You can mark in the points, as that's where your ellipse will touch the box. Instead, draw an X shape, intersecting all corners of the box. Now your box is divided into triangular (uneven) quarters. Whereby the top and bottom one are symmetrical and the left and right ones are symmetrical. So if it's a wide ellipse, the top and bottom with be smooth sweeping curves, the left and right divisions will contain the more angled bend. It's hard to explain without an image. You could literally explain this with one image lol and it's still a guess-work based formula but pretty accurate.

Love the book. As a person who is new to drawing in perspective I find this book very informative which is helping me immensely to get started with perspective freehand skills. I noticed that most all your starting freehand designs are with a pen and paper. Do you ever start with a wacom pad? I have some difficulties with the wacom to screen disconnect. I am sure it would improve with time and experience, but do you have any good tips for drawing digital via a wacom? btw I am also watching a video by one of your students, John Park, which is also very helpful. He certainly gives you a lot of love.
Hi Scott, I just have a question about the Major axis of the ellipse....when you are drawing a smaller ellipse inside a larger ellipse on the same plane, for example the tracks of a vinyl record, I know all the ellipses share the same Minor axis, but do they share the same Major axis?
Yes they would if they were on a perfectly flat plane. The major axis will not help you place the ellipse in the end though so it doesn't really matter. Get the minor axis right and the degree and that's all you need.

I think my challenge is how to make a series of concentric ellipses. For instance, try to draw a car wheel. There's tire, wheel, hubs, etc. I can draw one nice ellipse, but draw a set of them is hard. Freehand can not get them all in the same perspective and concentric. Any tips? Thanks
Do you slide the underside of the palm of your hand over the paper? Or is it a complete hover? So no contact with the paper? I'm having difficulty getting smooth ellipses.
Probably resting my palm on the page when I can, but not for the larger ellipses. Also you need to be careful not to smudge your drawings it you do touch the page a lot with your palm. Keep at it, they get easier, don't be afraid to tighten them up with eclipse guides.
Hi, Sir. I'm learning the skills with "how to draw". When I watch your video, you always draw shapes and lines perfectly. Therefore, I practice freehand drawing hardly. I had a problem. I can't draw a perfect cylinder. Especially large cylinder. The line wasn't straight enough. The ellipses weren't perfect. Is the problem just about more practices to improve? When I draw an ellipse, does it allow lots of strokes to overlap? Or I should practice more to accomplish an ellipse just in one stroke? or It's not necessary? Thank you so much.
+sisqosnew It's definitely a better idea to practice drawing curves/ellipses in one stroke, using many small strokes won't get as accurate or as clean of a line as one well placed stroke will, and it pretty much defeats the purpose of learning how to control your hand/strokes (basically what this video is about). And about not being able to draw straight lines, that's something that just takes a lot of practice to get right :)
+Kuvari Still, I don't think you can get to that accurate "one stroke" without first building the ellipse muscle memory it requires. And to build that muscle memory, you must draw many strokes on top of the other for many many hours, so you can build fluency and confidence. After that, I think is relatively easy to achieve that "one stroke". So I disagree, I don't think is a good advice to tell beginners to go on and practice "one stroke" ellipses. That comes way later.
Artists tell you in these kind of exercises that you should ghost the line first, that is, without touching the paper you should go through the motion several times and once you're confident enough you're doing it correctly, you let the pen touch the paper to make the line. I think it's good advice telling students to try it in one line because your mistakes will be more obvious and you can now be conscious of the mistake you just made, so you keep that mistake in mind every time you make another attempt and so forth. Also everyone makes mistakes and even Scott doesn't make 100% perfect lines. He even says he didn't warm up. Don't be so hard on yourself.

Just got this book. But i don't have an iPad. Are all of the videos uploaded here? I've only found a couple. Just finished up Chapter 3 where I was mirroring planes in perspective. When I was in art school we had maybe one project on perspective, nothing like this. Great stuff.
Hi, thanks for the video. Do you recommend always to use your arm for rotation? what about small drawings "doodles"? I normally use my finders with a bit of wrist movement. Is that a bad technique? (I think it offers more precision than moving the whole arm for such a small ellipse and it avoids rotating paper to match your arm's minor axis reference, using the index finger instead). thank you

but Scott, is this the only kind of elipse that I will encounter. sometimes there is perspective playing a role too . for example: a cylinder place in a 3/4 position and balanced on a stick(whatevs). I hope you get me. if so please answer.

These videos are very helpful so if I get the book I'd like to be able to access that content, and I don't use mobile devices (perhaps that is seen as eccentric these days but I just don't like those tiny screens and endless status updates).

Yes. We had the perspective shadow constructions at first in this book but when explaining them we quickly found that we wanted to add a lot more about the values in the shadows as well so we pulled that chapter and we're putting it in the How to Render book.
Scott Robertson I saw on amazon there was a How To Design book by you, first it said limited availability now i cant find it. was it a mistake on their part posting it early cause its still in the works or is it out there? and also in your book there isn't much on doing shadows, is that one of the parts in the up coming How to render book? and do you have any recommended books with good reference images (mostly preferring environments)? Scott Robertson Ok! Good to know thanks for your time. Im now going through the book thoroughly since im done with school for now. in perspectives, the visual ray method is amazing. i actually am doing perspective on paper again (Still got to make my grids). I have always done most of my perspective on digital using a trick in photoshop using the polygon tool.
In my opinion, only if you are having trouble seeing the lines. I tend to draw as light as possible to keep the drawing clean and allow myself to "explore" a bit before committing to the darker lines at the end.
I don't know if perhaps I'm just trying too hard, but my ellipses are always pointier on the left and rounder on the right, and I can't seem to fix that flaw.
One thing that might help is trying to purposely draw the opposite. Meaning try to draw the ellipse pointier on right and rounder on the left, then when you miss you might actually be better off. Short of that I would just clean up your ellipses with ellipse guides.
Thank you for the advice, I think it's helping, it feels like the more I force the opposite, the more my ellipse conforms to something between the two when I relax on the forcing - if that makes any sense. I will try to keep at it.

Why not just use a template to draw an ellipse? Life is short and there are lots of things worth learning, so why is it critically important to be able to draw ellipses free-hand. Not trying to be a smart ass, but its important to explain why its important to master this skill. My ellipse template sit right next to my pencils and eraser.
***** I do use ellipse templates for correcting and cleaning up my freehand ones. I fond though that using them for the initial sketch is slower and cumbersome. They are great though for step 2 in the creation of a more refined sketch.

+Norman Klein personally I've found constantly practicing various shapes, especially the ellipse, has helped improve my overall sketching accuracy. Keep meaning to get a guide but there are so many I just try to make do with my flexible french curve

Love the book. As a person who is new to drawing in perspective I find this book very informative which is helping me immensely to get started with perspective freehand skills.
I noticed that most all your starting freehand designs are with a pen and paper. Do you ever start with a wacom pad? I have some difficulties with the wacom to screen disconnect. I am sure it would improve with time and experience, but do you have any good tips for drawing digital via a wacom?
btw I am also watching a video by one of your students, John Park, which is also very helpful. He certainly gives you a lot of love.

Hi Scott, I just have a question about the Major axis of the ellipse....when you are drawing a smaller ellipse inside a larger ellipse on the same plane, for example the tracks of a vinyl record, I know all the ellipses share the same Minor axis, but do they share the same Major axis?
Yes they would if they were on a perfectly flat plane. The major axis will not help you place the ellipse in the end though so it doesn't really matter. Get the minor axis right and the degree and that's all you need.

I think my challenge is how to make a series of concentric ellipses. For instance, try to draw a car wheel. There's tire, wheel, hubs, etc. I can draw one nice ellipse, but draw a set of them is hard. Freehand can not get them all in the same perspective and concentric. Any tips? Thanks

Do you slide the underside of the palm of your hand over the paper? Or is it a complete hover? So no contact with the paper? I'm having difficulty getting smooth ellipses.
Probably resting my palm on the page when I can, but not for the larger ellipses. Also you need to be careful not to smudge your drawings it you do touch the page a lot with your palm. Keep at it, they get easier, don't be afraid to tighten them up with eclipse guides.
Hi, Sir. I'm learning the skills with "how to draw". When I watch your video, you always draw shapes and lines perfectly. Therefore, I practice freehand drawing hardly. I had a problem. I can't draw a perfect cylinder. Especially large cylinder. The line wasn't straight enough. The ellipses weren't perfect. Is the problem just about more practices to improve?
When I draw an ellipse, does it allow lots of strokes to overlap?
Or I should practice more to accomplish an ellipse just in one stroke? or It's not necessary?

+sisqosnew It's definitely a better idea to practice drawing curves/ellipses in one stroke, using many small strokes won't get as accurate or as clean of a line as one well placed stroke will, and it pretty much defeats the purpose of learning how to control your hand/strokes (basically what this video is about). And about not being able to draw straight lines, that's something that just takes a lot of practice to get right :)

+Kuvari Still, I don't think you can get to that accurate "one stroke" without first building the ellipse muscle memory it requires. And to build that muscle memory, you must draw many strokes on top of the other for many many hours, so you can build fluency and confidence. After that, I think is relatively easy to achieve that "one stroke". So I disagree, I don't think is a good advice to tell beginners to go on and practice "one stroke" ellipses. That comes way later.
Artists tell you in these kind of exercises that you should ghost the line first, that is, without touching the paper you should go through the motion several times and once you're confident enough you're doing it correctly, you let the pen touch the paper to make the line.
I think it's good advice telling students to try it in one line because your mistakes will be more obvious and you can now be conscious of the mistake you just made, so you keep that mistake in mind every time you make another attempt and so forth.
Also everyone makes mistakes and even Scott doesn't make 100% perfect lines. He even says he didn't warm up. Don't be so hard on yourself.
Hello Sir Scott, As you mentioned your next book will be "How To Render", what can a beginner expect to learn from this book especially if he/she is a beginner and would like to improve skill of rendering to use it on vehicles or industrial or product design or even interior design? As rendering industrial products (especially cars & other vehicles is complex and difficult).
Everything you mentioned hopefully. Like How to Draw it will start out simple and by the end be more complex covering a very wide range of materials.

Just got this book. But i don't have an iPad. Are all of the videos uploaded here? I've only found a couple. Just finished up Chapter 3 where I was mirroring planes in perspective. When I was in art school we had maybe one project on perspective, nothing like this. Great stuff.

Do you recommend always to use your arm for rotation? what about small drawings "doodles"? I normally use my finders with a bit of wrist movement. Is that a bad technique? (I think it offers more precision than moving the whole arm for such a small ellipse and it avoids rotating paper to match your arm's minor axis reference, using the index finger instead).

+Nekbeth There are no rules. Whatever works well and gives you good results. For sure the smaller the sketch the less I draw from my shoulder.

but Scott, is this the only kind of elipse that I will encounter. sometimes there is perspective playing a role too . for example: a cylinder place in a 3/4 position and balanced on a stick(whatevs). I hope you get me. if so please answer.

I have been drawing free hand for like 40 years.. people machines.. landscapes.. kinda burned out.. have tons of work done.. I want that waccom tablet.. the pencil process is what i'm burned out on.. and the endless steps.. ugk..
I have a question, Scott, if I don't have a smartphone or tablet compatible with the free software, will I be able to access the video links on each page? These videos are very helpful so if I get the book I'd like to be able to access that content, and I don't use mobile devices (perhaps that is seen as eccentric these days but I just don't like those tiny screens and endless status updates).

Yes. We had the perspective shadow constructions at first in this book but when explaining them we quickly found that we wanted to add a lot more about the values in the shadows as well so we pulled that chapter and we're putting it in the How to Render book.

I saw on amazon there was a How To Design book by you, first it said limited availability now i cant find it. was it a mistake on their part posting it early cause its still in the works or is it out there? and also in your book there isn't much on doing shadows, is that one of the parts in the up coming How to render book? and do you have any recommended books with good reference images (mostly preferring environments)? Thanks for your teachings!
***** Shadow constructions are going into How to Render. How to Design is still in the works, that older version was postponed due to my crazy schedule and no design book has been published yet.

Ok! Good to know thanks for your time. Im now going through the book thoroughly since im done with school for now. in perspectives, the visual ray method is amazing. i actually am doing perspective on paper again (Still got to make my grids). I have always done most of my perspective on digital using a trick in photoshop using the polygon tool.

Is there any merit in doing drawing exercises with heavier pencils/ pens?
In my opinion, only if you are having trouble seeing the lines. I tend to draw as light as possible to keep the drawing clean and allow myself to "explore" a bit before committing to the darker lines at the end.
What did you use to draw in this video Scott?
I don't know if perhaps I'm just trying too hard, but my ellipses are always pointier on the left and rounder on the right, and I can't seem to fix that flaw.
One thing that might help is trying to purposely draw the opposite. Meaning try to draw the ellipse pointier on right and rounder on the left, then when you miss you might actually be better off. Short of that I would just clean up your ellipses with ellipse guides.
Thank you for the advice, I think it's helping, it feels like the more I force the opposite, the more my ellipse conforms to something between the two when I relax on the forcing - if that makes any sense. I will try to keep at it.

Why not just use a template to draw an ellipse? Life is short and there are lots of things worth learning, so why is it critically important to be able to draw ellipses free-hand. Not trying to be a smart ass, but its important to explain why its important to master this skill. My ellipse template sit right next to my pencils and eraser.
***** I do use ellipse templates for correcting and cleaning up my freehand ones. I fond though that using them for the initial sketch is slower and cumbersome. They are great though for step 2 in the creation of a more refined sketch.

+Norman Klein personally I've found constantly practicing various shapes, especially the ellipse, has helped improve my overall sketching accuracy. Keep meaning to get a guide but there are so many I just try to make do with my flexible french curve
