Excellent gospel play! ONE OF THE BEST I'VE SEEN SO FAR! The plot was not meandering or going off on unrelated tangents. The motivations and interactions were interesting and recognizably human. Also, I have to congratulate you on breaking out of "the box." Too many gospel plays are all written to play out in someone's living room. That same tired couch, dinette and kitchen theme from every gospel play. Thank you for having the sense, the creativity, and the courage to place the emphasis on the STORY not the set-building. Nobody is going to miss a living room set if the story is well told and takes you places. Also, it seems like I heard some originally written music for this piece? Well done!! Critiques? The sound was not bad but could be better. But that is a money issue. A better system and mics will deliver a better quality of sound, but this want't too bad. Lighting was also good because it was selective and defined smaller areas of the stage. I would say, perhaps add what lighting designers call "practicals." (Meaning lamps and lights you might find in a house, business or on the street) A lamp on a desk in her green room. A working standing lamp (battery op.) in their living room. A working streetlamp in the park scene etc. Also the blocking of actor's movements during songs could be improved. The action should not mostly stop so that a song can happen. Try to continue the action and storytelling through the song rather than seeing it as a break from the rest of the play or one person following the other around obviously singing at them. Last thing - I know that most gospel playwrights tend to see the the performance of their play (especially in a real theater) as the end of the journey for a production. The climax. I don't know how many times this play was put before an audience, but once or twice would not be uncommon. But in the wide world of play development, this would have just been the first step before re-writes, improvements, bigger and better staging, etc would be added before the show went up again somewhere. No show can reach its potential at its first limited showing. I believe that this play is really worth developing in order to get better and better. BEST of luck!
Wow thank you for your feedback! It was both insightful and encouraging! This was my very first big production and funds were limited lol but we did the best we could. I've had a few more shows since then and with each one things get a little better. 😊 Please follow me on social media: Facebook: Dianna Lovejoy stage play productions for upcoming shows!! Thanks again and God bless 🙏

God has a blessing for you in this book! It was written by Vanessa Lynn, a black, female, playwright. This is the ONLY real resource that I could find talking *specifically* about urban gospel plays. A real "how-to" book that I think you will find both interesting and instructive. Please, please, please, get this book for yourself! You will thank me, I promise you! Best of luck!!!
