At least with Bill Murray his voice does have a bit of a Garfield tone to it that fits the character, Chris Pratt's voice on the other hand...is just Chris Pratt, nothing Garfield about it at all.

To be fair, even the Bill Murray movies did that. Not to the extreme as this film, but in the first movie, Garfield had to journey to the big city in order to get Odie back home.

    • @ariwl1

Yep. I just don't think Garfield works in these long stories because he's not the kind of character you look to have any sort of arc or growth. That's just not what people find appealing about the character. In the original Garfield cartoons, you could dump him in all kinds of nutty situations and it'd work fine because the whole thing would be over in 5-6 minutes and it was about telling jokes, not taking him on some kind of journey.

They could just stop trying to make a movie about a comic strip character who appears in "comics" that are literally 3-6 boxes in length and don't often have a lot of dialog and, really doesn't have a "story". Garfield and Friends worked because it was an hour long Saturday morning cartoon that was broken up into 10-15 minute shorts at the most, none of which were continuations of each other.

I think in the right creative hands, it could work. Maybe taking the elements that made the TV specials so entertaining and endearing and try combining them into one, feature-length continuous narrative.
I read that Disney nearly made a Garfield animated film back in the late ‘80s. The whole script was completed and was ready to hit production… till one of the executives reportedly got cold feet, thinking the film was too dark and scary for a Garfield story. It ended up being published by Jim Davis later on, independent from Disney.

Also the tv specials were pretty good and Garfield and Friends was ok. Now there isnt any sense of continuity and most of the times they dont use the secondary characters. I havent wacthed the new tv shows and it seems that they use Arlene or Nermal there but for example I think they dont use Jon's family anymore. In most of the television specials he treated Odie as a friend. And he does abuse of Odie here at least in the first act. And Garfield was kind of grumpy during most of the movie. But what felt off to me is that they set up the whole thing about him being lazy and a house cat and his father being a street cat...but then what happens is mostly Garfield being kind of a loser or dumb or getting hurt all the time. Its not him being lazy or not knowing about the street life, its just making him kind of a loser for not reason. Even Odie outsmarts and rolls his eyes at him and Odie may not be as dumb as Garfield thinks he is sometimes but its certainly not very smart. Here hes kind of cool and a genius. I actually think he was less likeable than his old idiot but faithful and loyable personality.

Guys, I love ya, but I feel like y’all kinda misunderstood Garfield as a character. The whole internet I believe has for quite sometime.
Being cynical, lazy, eating lasagna, etc. are all more so his hobbies and things he enjoys but they’re not who he is as a character.
Across all the various comics, shows and specials it’s been shown there’s a bit more depth to the character and franchise that people give it credit for.
Garfield can be energetic, he can willingly be active if he chooses to be (he’ll pull pranks on Jon, fuck around with the mailman, and even have quite the imagination where he’ll pretend he’s a superhero by the name of The Caped Avenger or something like else) and YES he can be extremely sentimental and caring.
Hell, the first Garfield special that was ever made has a climax where Garfield tries to break Odie out of the pound because he actually misses him. Not only does he fail to break him out and ends up getting himself caught, he’s told by one of the cats in the pound that they’re gonna EUTHANIZE Odie the next day and there’s nothing he can do about it.
Upon hearing that news you know what he does? He tries to comfort Odie the best that he can and spends the rest of the night looking out through the window of the pound thinking about the time they’ve spent together as a kitten and puppy up until that point while a sad song about not wanting to say goodbye plays.
And I’m not even gonna bring that brief existential horror series of comics Jim Davis did with Garfield in the 80’s during the Halloween season where he flat out says that Garfield’s biggest fear is having no one around at all.
And on the topic of the ridiculousness of the story? While a whole heist film starring the character seems like a strange plot for Garfield, he’s been in weirder stories that have put him even more out of his element.
He’s met aliens, ghost pirates and GOD. This is relatively tamed for him. The franchise walks more along the lines of Looney Tunes when how absurd or cartoonish it can get. It’s never been as “down to earth” as people who’ve only read like 10 comics and seen like one special or one tamer episode of the 80’s show assume it is. That’s more like taking the franchise at face value.

You go back around 30 years and a lot of animation and kids cartoons had a nice variety of jokes, lessons, and general content that you could look back on and find a deeper meaning to. Not saying all animated movies have to be that way, but how many of them are like that today? It feels like more and more of them are going for colorfully, whimsical, dumb-down entertainment for the pre-adolescents and calling it a day. That shouldn't be the standard.
