  • This week we had a great interview with Roger Sadowsky! Treavor Healy, owner of Healy Guitars and one of Roger's former employees, guest-hosted for us to ask the questions we didn't know we had. In this clip, Roger talks about how he got started putting preamps in basses and how it would lead to him becoming one of the most acclaimed bass-builders on the planet.

Agree on the importance of natural resonance and the wood used. No single material responds 100% identically across all frequencies, so every choice made is a trade-off. If wood didn't matter we'd see way more composite materials in guitars.
I kind of hate the trend of onboard electronics, because companies will put bad EQ and color over great pickups (looking at you, Ibanez). I hear more of the natural resonance aspect with passive pickups, and more dynamics, but if that stuff doesn't matter much to you, or bad trade-offs were made for the sound you need, there's value to a preamp. Would still get a separate multiband EQ over the onboard preamp, any day.
    Interesting discussion 👍

I will save this and post every time someone says that Roger Sadowsky installed a Sadowsky preamp in Marcus Miller’s bass.

Yeah. Ummm....wasn't the Marcus Fender preamp that Roger installed made by Bartolini??????

@@dfybyn the first was by Stars Guitars. The second he installed was a Bartolini.

I know how Roger can be. I came into this video expecting him to talk about how boosting bass and treble makes a certain curve and that's desirable for bass, etc lol. Thats ok though
