Been using the similar MP600 daily for about 6 months now after carrying Leatherman for years. I have been completely converted. These Gerbers are tough af and they get the job done. Meanwhile my Wave is laying around at home with broken tools on it. Haven't touched it in months and do not miss it.

Which tools broke on the Wave?

@@warweaponx6629 The weird little offset flat driver type thing snapped off at the hinge. It's a good tool overall and they all have their flaws, but I do love the Gerber. Just got the Diesel for Christmas!

@@brooksgarage3623 Yeah I’ve had my Diesel for years it’ll serve you well. Have a few Wave’s too but haven’t really used them much. I wanted a Skeletool do you have any experience with those? I’m hearing some people have snapped the pliers so that’s not good.

I have the Skeletool CX. The blade is nice, and it feels good; more like a knife than a multi tool. They did swap it out for me because the pliers broke. Even if the jaws don't break, the hinge will collapse with pressure. It's very light duty. I wouldn't even think about carrying it at work. It seems to be designed as something light and comfortable to carry on the weekend or for office types to hang in the pocket of their Dockers.

Had one growing up so there’s some sentimentality. Not getting one but watching this because of it.

In my civilian life, I carry a Wave. In my State Guard world, I've carried a Diesel for many years. On the whole, I prefer the Wave, but the Gerber has taken a lot of abuse and keeps on ticking. I've really got no complaints about it.

Hello ^^ Thank you for introducing the multi-tool of memories ~! It's a multi-tool with various functions. It's my favorite product with a pair of scissors and a wood saw. But I can't replace the dedicated Bit ADAPTER.

You might want to do a bit of Research but a few years back it was brought to Gerbers attention that there were Issues with the Plierhead that You noticed on the Review. The Pliers are sourced from Tiawan while the Sawblade and Sheath come from China. It was discovered that the Dies being Used were Worn Out and subsequently replaced and the Problem disappeared..The Balance of this Tool is Manufactured and Assembled in Portland Oregon

I bought one of these Diesels brandy new for like $120 without doing much research.. just wanted something new.
It sucked. I have a leatherman tool and is solid and works great and is super old. This felt cheap and the closer you look the more flaws that shouldn’t have made it through QC are there. The steel is so low grade they refuse to say what it even is.. I suspect 5cr.
Leatherman regardless of what year or model you buy will be well made and solid and be up front about the steels used in the tools. Knowing the steel is important to me, it tells me how hard I can use a tool, the type and grit of edge I want on the blade.. how it will perform in extreme temperatures on both ends, etc.
Leathermans heat treated 420HC they use on most of the tools is great stuff. On my 1995 it takes a razors edge and polished to a shine. It won’t rust or wear down at all and it’s like 30 years old. The one issue i had was using the flat head screwdriver on a stick screw I did slightly bend it. Used another MT to straiten it back out but I was using it wayyy to hard, lesson learned.
Anyways though, the Diesel was so low quality all around I would bother sharpening. I ended up giving to an old friend who was moving and lacked tools lol.

All my Leatherman multi-tools are one-hand openers, except the Micra because of the spring for the scissors which works against the opening action.
I have the same preference for non-OTF multi-tools. I find it a little strange that you say the "weight on the Gerber is good, just __ ounces. That's because they have to make the tools so short in order to have the OTF feature and therefore they use significantly less steel. My first important evaluation of a new (to me) multi comes when I pick it up and sense the heft. If they don't feel like they are almost solid steel Iknow the odds are that they will suffer in comparison to the standard Leatherman configuration and will have to have impressive unique features to win me over.

That is an outstanding point. I think that’s one of the reasons I like Surge so much. The weight of a multi tool doesn’t bother me like it does other people.

I had one, until I lost it 6 months later. I bought a cheap one and broke it, but that one and it did good for the money I'd buy another one if I ran across it. The blades are short if I remember right

That’s a good question. I’m not very familiar with law-enforcement belt sizes. It seems to me that they’re going to be quite a bit wider. Let me try to do some research on that and get back with you.
