I was able to build a thin mask but not achieve the tight surface. My middle-school students will have the option of paper mache` this session. One student will be building the body of Dumbledore's phoenix, Fawkes. I have bee studying your techniques to support his project. As an art teacher I have the best homework in the World! Jonni Thanks for this version of the recipe. My first attempt using cup measurements was very wet and sticky. Glad to know it’s not just me that had difficulty getting the mix right. I found my joint compound had an oily substance in the compound and when I added baby oil it made it too wet. Think I will leave this next out. Definitely using this recipe next for sure! 🙏🏼

Thank you so much for this video! I saw a lot of videos on making those very nice paper mache antique vintage looking bowls..the famous ones are from restoration hardware. I made one here at home 4 days ago and it’s still not dry coz it’s so thick 🙈 would you mind giving out some tips on how to make one? Thanks a million x 😊❤️
I hadn't seen those bowls so I did a fast Google search, and the ones I found looked like they were made with a thick layer of pulped paper. And yes, it would take a really long time to dry unless you put them in the oven. I found a really good tutorial (which you probably already saw) here: www.ahousewebuilt.com/paper-mache/ You can dry any paper mache in the oven at 250F. If your oven has a fan in it, turn it on. With paper that thick it will still take a long time to dry, but not as long as leaving it out on the counter. Be sure to seal it after it's totally dry (but wait until it's really dry all the way through!!) with a matte acrylic varnish. That will keep it from absorbing moisture from the air. Good luck with it! 😀

How cool is that. I see your using the toilet paper for the clay but I have seen others use cellulose green fiber insulation. What is the difference and why? Are both okay to use for outside props?
I tried the cellulose insulation once, and the brand that was available to me contained a substance that ruined the clay. It turned it into rubbery blogs. Your brand might work OK, though. No paper mache clay is waterproof, though. You can keep them outside for a little while if you use an outdoor varnish, but they'll still soften because the varnish won't keep all the water out. You'll need to bring them back inside and dry them out if you want to use them again next year.

Almost, but not quite. The proportions of glue and joint compound are slightly different, too, and there's a lot less paper in this recipe than in the paper mache clay. That's what makes it smoother.

It will stay fairly dry for a few days, but not permanently. It tends to soften after a few days of rain. For Halloween decorations or a parade float, a good exterior varnish will work - just not for long-term outdoor use.

The air dry clay recipe isn't as sticky, and it's smoother than the original paper mache clay recipe. I find the air dry clay slightly more difficult to use because I like to use very thin layers, but many people prefer it. They're both used over an armature, so it's really up to you which one you like best.
Hey Jonni, I’ve got a old fashioned milk turn which I’m going to cover in the paper Mache clay, then use the same clay in silicon moulds to decorate it, paint and seal! They’ve sorted that problem with the order of your book~ and I’ll be getting it in May, if you friend me then I can show you my results on my Facebook page or on Messenger! I also have a channel on here which I’ll put up as well~ you may want to keep an eye on the progress of it!
stupid question: I am VERY Gluten free for medical reasons, so I don't eat flour - but can one use this as in this recipe (with a mask & gloves on) & not get sick?

I'm here in Los Angeles 2023 and I can't find that Proform joint compound anywhere! 😡 All they have is Dap and USG joint compound so, I'm gonna try the USG.
It will stick to the plaster unless you use a lot of release, and it dries very hard so it would be difficult to get it out of the mold. I recommend using silicone molds instead. However, the texture of this recipe makes it difficult to get a good casting. Why isn't a colander or a mesh strainer used to strain the bulk of the water out of the paper?
I do use one, but I didn't want to go get it when I was making this video. A metal mesh strainer works really well.

Yes, you can keep paper mache clay in a closed container. If you need to save it for more than a day or two, stick it in the refrigerator or freezer.
