Lol I think "stay back" is a reference to his role in the Illiad. Where he and his brother where mostly responsible for things like counter attacking, guarding the ships, and defending retreats. They didn't lead any of the big Greek attacks. But they where still super important to the Greek war effort. I would argue his older brother spent like 60% of the Illiad carrying the Greek Army.

Greater Ajax had some pretty cool duels with Hector and was pretty helpful buuut he also kermited himself because he didn’t win Achilles armor during his funeral games. So he missed the rest of the war because he was angy.
