  • What do the descendants of the victims of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, the Holocaust and the genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda have in common? Studies show many will suffer higher rates of anxiety, depression and PTSD.
We all inherit many things from our families - stories, cheekbones, heirlooms - but there is something else we can inherit, too; the effects of pain and suffering passed down through the ages, otherwise known as generational trauma. So what does this mean for those carrying the weight of history in their genes? And, if trauma is inherited, can Gen Z be the ones to finally break the cycle?
    Presenter: Myriam Francois
    Guests:
Serene Thin Elk - Mental health and addictions therapist
    Zaina Arafat - Writer
Elliot Sang - Content creator, writer and musician

Poverty is also trauma and until that is addressed we will keep on putting the onus of healing generational trauma on the individual while not looking at the societal factors that contribute to it.

If people stop brainwashing their children to hate their neighbours, the children will play happily together, and the violence will stop, but the problem happens when the parents hate their enemies more than they love their children

Sometimes the parents just hate themselves and the children remind them of themselves.

Thank you for another brilliant piece, it makes me very happy to see the younger generation (Gen Z) talk about generational trauma.
In Africa we have a concept of ubuntu which loosely translates to, “People are people because of people”. As society we are all connected in ways we sometimes fail to recognise. Governments have a long history of traumatising their very own people. One simply needs to consult a modern map of the borders of countries. Chances are good that any straight line on a border has divided a village, a community, a culture and along with that traditions and customs.
A talk show such as this is a very good start to raise awareness of our actions. Encouraging people to talk with other people about trauma, be it generational or otherwise.
My sincere hope is that we all become aware of our role, our actions and what we can do to reduce trauma and start the healing process.
    Well done to all involved

What about the descendants of the Arab slave trade. Oh right Arabs castrated male African slaves(70-90 percent died of the procedure or during the transport to the muslim world) and female slaves were brought to harems to be r-ed and sexually abused in harems so no black minorities could emerge.

I learned about dna and only 10% of our dna is physical genetics, and 90% is emotional and behavioural. We are not born as a blank slate we are born pre loaded w reactions and habits that have been passed down through our ancestry. So those who look at this genocide and dont feel moved it is perhaps because their ancestry never had to deal w that

Gen Z didn’t discover the concept of generational trauma. There is documentation of the concept going back over a decade. One of the best authors I’ve read on the topic is Resmaa Menakem who I’m pretty sure isn’t a Gen Z. Gen Z may be talking about it a lot but it’s not like this age group conceptualized. That said, if they are discussing and popularizing it then that’s very good. I hope one day we can get away from all the generational division, it’s artificial and not very helpful.

I notice most American psychological trauma manifest in insults like weak and stupid in America... as their trauma is poverty...which they believe is caused by (insert slurrr- usually drug addiction- but mentallyill is the newest scapegoat)
Then, American ideals manifest as a complete lack of compassion- even for Holocaust - because they don’t understand their own trauma - haven’t even realized they’ve been hit(once heard a AmeriKaren preach positive thinking to a Holocaust survivor)(I saw a cheerleader try to teach a combat veteran about PTSD) (comments like the one above) ...
Americans have no philosophy of interdependence, much less laws against poverty, or protecting women and children from throwing their own children on the streets- it’s always the individual’s responsibility- little girls in America are held more accountable for their own rape than the perp!... it’s the Holocaust survivor’s duty to cheer up and smile about it...the Palestinian duty to suffer in silence-
now, that is happening- now, that is real- but it’s not at all islamaphobia or antisemitism- unless you’re like super old and haven’t been able to make new neurons for decades- then definitely racist-
      but this is not racism
      This is willful ignorance
This is grandstanding and scapegoating- and blissful ignorance to any trauma
