  • Transmission has been whining at me in 3rd gear, so I got around to changing the fluid out to see if that helps. Included my tip for pumping fluid up into fill hole.

I have been advised to use 20W50 (ie engine oil, not transmission oil) for the four speed manual + overdrive).

Was that sludge from the transmission,?

Yes. I didn't look like the transmission fluid had been changed in decades.

Are you sure MT90 is the way to go for this? Doesn’t Volvo just spec straight 30W?

Service manual says SAE 80 is appropriate, but for continuous temps above 30C (87F), SAE 90 is good. Then says 30W is OK if not using gear oil. I never flushed it correctly, so I'll be going back to this and put SAE 80. I get cold mornings year round, so the heavier weight probably isn't right, but manual does say to use gear oil. And honestly considering the sludge I drained before, and the whining, I'm just postponing the inevitable.

@@MakeitOnce makes sense, thank you for the reply! I am going to go the same route that you did, picked up a few quarts of redline to hopefully get the whining noises down. How have your results been?

New fluid lightened the shifting a bit (not sure how to describe it), and gears hold nice and solid (though now my clutch master/slave need to be replaced). Noise is about the same or worse in 3rd, but better in 2nd and gone in 4th. The brass synchro in 3rd seems to the be the one that wears out the most. This seems to support that. Reports are that the whining is low fluid, but, I think its a worn synchro; low fluid would just make the sound more noticeable. After I change fluid out again, I'll see again if anything changes, but I think the damage is done. Synchros are not expensive, but difficult to replace.

What fluid & how much did you use?

I show it in the video. The owners manual lists the weights needed.

Odometer read 4.5k when I drove it home, but it's been rebuilt at least once. My guess is 204k. Working on a walk around vid; there are a couple nice upgrades, but otherwise was very original. Its been raining here, so shooting is paused. Lockdown has prevented me driving it, but will detail the whole car in a vid when the sun comes out again. Hoping end of the week.
