Make it Once

Добавлен 1 окт 2011
Why do some some objects last a long, long time? There is a lot more to classic survivors than good old craftsmanship. Old things that just keep going have intangibles that are hard to see. Old Volvos have many of those hidden qualities.
In my vids, I work on projects trying to figure out why they only needed to be made once; I will restore old workhorses, and fix-up some classics, but mostly its about discovering cool old sh&t. Most of the videos posted here will be records of the first, and often, singular attempt at making/restoring/fixing/maintaining curious artifacts and pieces from my California life.

Could I be a Volvo Nut? Yes. Yes, I probably am.
At a certain point, a person realizes they are spending a lot too much time thinking about Volvos, all Volvos, any Volvos. And at that point, they either accept that they are a Volvo Nut, or they don't...
... but then spend the rest of the day looking for Volvos. :D

Who needs a second throttle butterfly? Volvo 142 Intake Correction
Просмотров 3982 года назад
Due to some creative engineering, Volvo, put a second throttle plate on the intake in order to try to meet emission control standards. They only had it in place for a few years, and it didn't work, so my mission today is to take it out in such a way , that I can reclaim some lost air flow and fuel mixture control.
Making Complicated Paper Gaskets? Laser Cut it!

Old cars need "paper" gaskets, and sometimes they are impossible to find! To solve that problem, first, try not to to start a fire, then make them yourself with a laser cutter! There are dozens of little gaskets and o-rings all over the place on my Volvo B20 and B18 engines, and ordering them can be a pain in the rear, so it's time to take a different approach and start making them.
My 1960's Zenith Strombergs are beautiful; why did Volvo drop them?
Просмотров 2432 года назад
Can I figure out why Volvo dropped these beautiful carbs? The Zennith Strombergs seem to be pretty good performers and very reliable. After taking them apart, I really like the design. Mine were a total mess but still started the car right up after decades of sitting, so they can't be that bad. Back in the day, Volvo only put Strombergs on their cars for 3 years, 1969-1971, before going back to...

Volvo 140 Wheel Studs are not as advertised!
Просмотров 1742 года назад
"Press-in wheel stud" on my old Volvo 140 is a misrepresentation. It's not actually designed to be serviced with a shop press, but it took me a while to figure that out. In fact, I would declare they weren't designed to be serviced at all, because, why would a wheel stud need to be serviced on an old Volvo, anyway? Ripping out a Volvo 240 Head at the Junkyard

After the holidays, I got out of he house and did something a little different. Instead of fixing something on one of my cars, I pulled apart a junkyard motor to grab a future upgrade part for Marty. It was a little sketch, but fun side adventure that hopefully will kick off a fun year of Volvo 140 car mods.

Weber 32/36 proper setup to my B18; years later!
Просмотров 28 тыс.2 года назад
My Volvo B18 engine was rebuilt a few thousand miles before I bought it, but the Weber 32/36 was left in bad shape, and was poorly tuned. "It's running, so how bad could the setup be?" I told myself. Truthfully, I was intimidated to dig into it, but the bad performance, rich conditions, and low fuel economy got me over that fear. This is the third time I've messed with it (after cleaning it, ch...

Sorry, I want to determine the bolt holes to match the bolts of the object being imitated. How to do it, may I know?
If you don't have the original gasket to scan I'd say take a picture of the surface, take a couple measurements and make a rough drawing on top of the picture. Test cut it with paper to check the fit. Then use some little trial and error until it fits right.

there is a coolant petcock on the engine block near the gearbox on the right side of the endine under the manifold. you should open it or remove it from the block and flush it with that off. i promise you will get alot of rust and sediment out that way. did it on mine recently. did several flushes and bits kept coming out.
The doubled gasket would change float drop height and likely affect good driveability...
Carburetors are vented, they will always evaporate after a few weeks.
Great carburetors
Some great videos here. Haven’t gotten through all of them. My initial thought was that the carb needs rebuilding (based on rebuilding lots of them in the 80’s and 90s lol) Did you end up rebuilding it? I just bought a 144s with same set up.
Put a ome size larger idle jet, likely a 65, easy to change, external, only takes a minute and make sure o ring is still there sealing jet holder.
Invest in a good afr gauge , it',ll greatly help with your precise carb tuning
I have been advised to use 20W50 (ie engine oil, not transmission oil) for the four speed manual + overdrive).
HI I see you ordered parts from VP, IM looking and cant find it, Do you have the box or the part number for the master pump?
I have a 1967 volvo amazon and the float tanks just piss out fuel and i can't figure out why do you think you could have any insight on why that is?
In the carb? And with a Weber? Float valve is faulty somehow; not set right, or just not working. Or fuel pump is creating too much pressure for the valve; cars with mechanical pumps can only deal with a few PSI, newer pumps can generate way more than needed causing leaks. Take the output tube off the pump stick a funnel in it and pour some fuel into it and see if it still leaks... if not its the pump pressure, if so, then work your way down the line to where the fuel is coming out and you got the source of the problem.
for the rear seats is their an actually mount on in the trunk to actually mount the spindal?
The 3 bolt points as far as I can tell are in the C pillar, in the rail just behind the door, and under the seat on the seat frame. Some people build something to mount something in the trunk, but the car originally wasn't designed to have anything mounted in the trunk.
Love that ride
My dad had a car exactly like this when I was 4 years old in the 1960s. I remember sitting in the back with the same view watching my dad drive with the exact same steering wheel
these Volvo were fun to drive even if not truly powerful cars they were true cars like every car should be built
Just caught this video . What you didn't cover was when fitting the pump back in did you press the top fitting rubber rings (on the top of the pump)into the cylinder head, did you need to clamp it? Also did you use any waterproof lithium grease on the seal? I ask because i'm about to do the same job.
Why not install the original proper SU carbs. ?
Short answer is that I don't have the original set. Car came with this setup. My guess is whoever did it couldn't find the separate intake manifold when they swapped in the sport exhaust and manifold (Probably needed due to rust since this car was near the beach for a long time). On paper the weber can tune for more fuel, which usually means more power, but in this car, not so much; so at the end of it all, whoever did it, was going for the typical exhaust upgrade, and didn't know what the trade off was. I did pick up a replacement pair, but I don't know the condition, nor do I have all the parts to do it. Its not a simple swap since I would need to buy a new linkage and set it all up, etc. Once Marty is driving well I can take on more with Newton. I want to keep one of the two running, and this sort of job would probably take me quite a while with my current schedule. Maybe one day :)
@@MakeitOnce Bag the Weber.
I do same process. Tip: burn inside cuts before outside edge. On complicated ones, I just use lightburn to vector trace, drawing a line to the end of each curve and pulling the line center to fit. Super fast.
Yup and yup :) At this point I'm good enough with the pen tool, that I'd do it that way in most cases. I think I just showed it this way for ease of entry sort of example.
Is the thin hose in the middle air or fuel?
It's a vacuum line to the distributor. Fuel is the bigger tube on the front side.
Carb cheater!
I don't think you should pump the gas pedal that much with the choke all the way out as there comes so much fuel that it kills everything!!! Try with the choke out, but not pumping the pedal, as the choke is there to give the engine all the fuel it needs!!!
This video was the start of a long process of figuring out the problem (You gotta keep watching all the videos about the carb). What I discovered since then, is that the Weber Carbs have an open vent port from the bowl to the engine compartment, so between driving, the gas in the bowl evaporates within a day or less on a warm day. I had put in a K&N air filter which made it even worse. When I would go to start up the car after a day, there was no fuel in the bowl, and I indeed had a starved condition. Pumping the pedal wasn't doing anything until the bowl filled up. I also installed a lesser fuel pump, so it took a few seconds to build up a little head pressure to get gas into the bowl. I needed to crank it a few seconds, then wait for the fuel to travel up to the bowl for about 20 seconds, then I crank again and it starts. Now, that's my process and works every time. Additionally, in later videos, I show how the carb wasn't tuned right, the choke cable was bent, and the choke butterfly was loose and never sealed with choke pulled. I fixed all that, so now when I pull the choke it actually closes off, and once I wait a few seconds for some fuel to get to the bowl, it starts without any pedal pumping, or fiddling. If I really wanted to make this work with the weber, I would install a rare Weber cold air intake that has a louver built in, so when the engine isn't running no air gets in or out of the carb. That would in theory keep the gas from evaporating, and regulate air flow and temp, so the mix would actually be tunable. Unrestricted air flow in these engines doesn't seem to work well at low RPM. The Weber just isn't designed for this car, and none of it is well suited for warm California air.
@@MakeitOnce thanks!!!👍👍👍
Thank you for posting this. '66 owner here as well and was apprehensive about how tricky those rear windows would be. The seals are spendy, but this gives me confidence to go for it. Again, thank you!
Glad it helped.
i have a 122s volvo ,changed all the HT leads ,cap, condenser points and gapped everything as per spec it barely runs feels like the leads are all backward but they are in correct manner any ideas ?
Not to be destructive, but as simple as this one is, it takes a minute max, to cut by hand.
Cutting by hand isn't exact and that's a fact jack
And I challenge you to make one in a minute.
Thanks for posting this! My 122S didn't come with any, so I had no reference. I had been installing these all wrong (putting in on the headlight ring first and not the trim ring. I just need to figure out which side is up when I fit it to the ring now.
Thank you for taking the time to do the video!
Misfire not a fuel problem
Thanks for taking the time to post
Did you figure out how to fix the corner where you couldn't get it into the channel?
I gently pried it with a screw driver, then smashed the seal in place. Not the best, but that day was frustrating. If I had known how much rain Califa would be getting this year, I would have doubled back and fit all the seals a bit better (and finished the trunk and quarters). The test will be when I can get in there during dry weather and see if anything leaked. Thanks for the interest.
Doors, windows, and trunk seal are my next undertaking.
If it sat with ethanoyl gasoline in bowl may turn into jelly. Awesome car
What I have found, at least here in typically dry Califa (not this year, though!!!!) it actually evaporates into a powdery caked residue within a couple days. The "bowl" of the Weber isn't sealed/baffled at all, and with a K&N the gas just disappears. The jelly thing must be a pre-ethanol thing, cause I've never seen it on either Newton or Marty, and they both have sat with gas for long periods of time. Still a bad residue that needs cleaning cause it binds the moving parts even worse, but not a sticky mess. :)
Noise could be ECU.....under right front seat....hard to tell from video
I never did find out. David Bello did a video series on this car when he came to get it, but didn't get in to the details. It's all fixed up and driving around in SoCal which is cool.
I had four.....running a volvo shop in San Francisco.....three 73s and one 74.....great cars
This one ended up down south via David Bello in the hands of a older Volvo nut who restored it completely. Great story.

What fluid & how much did you use?
I show it in the video. The owners manual lists the weights needed.
New radiator (copper) is over $600.00 and only weighs half as much as an original...
Yes, I will be investing in one, when I get back to the engine. Might also go to an electric fan, depending on the cooling needs when I get the good bits in place. I kinda think of this as a later piece to decide based on need.
I had a weber 32 dir on my b14 engine. Many of the issues you describe I had as well. I always thought at first that it was a vacuum leak, the jets, bad gaskets and etc. Then I just started to adjust the carb as I forgot to do it when I had it running the first time. Fixed every issue. Shaking, bad performance, ran too rich and would die when it was warm, and bad fuel economy. All I can tell you is that the 32 dir is incredibly sensitive to vibrations, and if you've got bad engine mounts you want to keep an eye on the carb.
I have good mounts. I'm starting to speculate that the bowl shape isn't well suited to this side mount setup. There is a lot of rocking motion when on the side of the engine instead of on top. Instead of just vibration, it seems to move a lot. A lot of people think the big problem is cause of the bends in the intake, uneven heating, and air flow, but seeing it wiggle around, I can only imagine the gas sloshing around the relatively flat "bowl" has a big impact.
@@MakeitOnce that might actually be true. One common issue on the b14 engine was that carb would actually shake loose and you had to retighten it every now and then.
I’ve had this same problem! Comes out of adjustment every few months and runs poor. Ordered new mounts as they are clearly gone then saw your comment so will be changing them tomorrow then tuning 👍🏼
Nice knife. I have the 48A which has a narrower blade. Have had it since the mid 60's.
I dont even have that stupid mount. pain in ass to figure something out
A classic job nicely filmed. I hope the push rod adjustment is good. There should be just a fraction of play at the actuating arm and the pushrod or you are likely to get clutch slip. Unhook the spring from the arm to make the check easier. Yes I realise this was done some months ago!.
Do not remember the ignition timing must bee rigt too, tdc like the dwell., good sparkplugg,
