Thank You Gary, Thank You Phil at Shady Acres Woodshop.... Gary I had no idea what your plans were for this piece of Olive wood and it was so much fun watching your turning. All the while trying to figure out "what was Gary going to make?" Always enjoy & look forward to your adventures. HA, Gary, at 6:39 you stopped to make some coffee & I also stopped to some MORE coffee, OH YEA!!!! .. Gary that Olive wood sure comes alive with finish!!! .. I like the glass insert but I also like the looks of the piece with that rounded top. .. Beautiful turning this morning Gary and until next time..........TM
Thanks so much TM. I have to admit for almost a year I was not sure what I was going to make out of it. I know I did not want to ruin it after almost doing just that. I decide which end I I wanted to keep and just went with that. It was sure a lot of fun to do. Take care my friend, Gary
Good afternoon, Gary. I did like your video. Olive wood is a gorgeous wood to work with. Excellent job with the vase and the design change. You and Phil have been two of my favorite woodturners. All the best to you.
Excellent instructional sense, Gary! Your descriptive powers are vivid followed by clear modeling of the technique. After watching many turning videos, I'm persuaded that few (probably none) turners are more effective. You definitely are my "go to" turning mentor.
It does not get much better than that, Gary. That is a stupendous looking piece of Olive wood! I love that inclusion that you left intact. It really is a game changer for that piece. Great video, my friend. Really enjoyed this one. Thanks for sharing! All the best, …..Gord
Thank you very much Gord. Hard to mess up Olive wood but I tried a year ago. I was going to make a globe out of it but decided that was not a good idea. Sure happy I figured out a way to save it. Take care my friend, Gary
Thank you very much Wes! I still have one very nice piece that I have been saving. I see it sitting there and have not forgot about it. Just waiting for the right time. Take care, Gary
Olive wood is on my list to turn. I have a good sized piece from Jerusalem. I have been saving it for something special. This turning is gorgeous! That would be a great piece done with silk flowers too.
Thank you so much Todd. I am sure my wife will find some very nice flowers to put in it. As it was these were the last four still growing. Wow my dream is to get a nice piece from Jerusalem. Thanks for watching, Gary
That is so beautiful. My possibly new favorite wood is olive wood. I like the laser work. I have loved cherry wood best for years. Olive wood is climbing up past everything else.
Beautiful vase! I like the shape so much better after the design change...more elegant and graceful. Good call there! Just spray paint that plastic bottle black and it's a perfect insert. Always a pleasure to watch you work.
Thank you Leigh. We have lots of spice bottles and I save them when empty just for uses like this. Some are glass and some plastic. Happy you enjoyed the video, Gary
Olive is one of my favorite woods to look at. But hard and brittle. I don't turn. But have used it. It also responds very well to oil finishes. This piece is lovely, brings out your eye for form as well as the wood's grain and features.
That Olive was in good hands with you at the gouge, Gary! Very nice design, especially taking into account the bark inclusions and natural areas. Those were a must save for sure! It was fun to hear the excitement in your voice as you revealed the beautiful grain this piece had to offer. Then when you applied the sanding sealer, oh my! Just an excellent turning and video and, oh yeah, great use of the laser, too! Very cool! Great job, my friend, keep'em coming! 😊 Phil
Thanks Phil I like it a lot. Especially the bark inclusions. But I treasure the day you gave me this beautiful piece of wood. Thanks again my friend, Gary
Beautiful vase, that olive wood sure is lovely! Your laser did a great job with your name and the other engravings you put on the bottom! Well done and thanks! Cheers Al
Thank you Denise, Olive wood is spectacular looking for sure. It was a wonderful surprise to get the Olive that Phil gave me. And I still have one whole piece and some smaller ones I cut from the piece I made this one from. Thanks for watching, Gary
That is the first of your videos I have watched and like you I am a lover of olive wood especially when it has lots of natural defects.Nice finished piece 👏👌 thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much Peter and I appreciate you watching. I do have a few other videos where I turned Olive from this same batch. Thanks for watching, Gary
...this is one gorgeous piece...very well done! Olive wood is one of my favorite woods, second only to Hawaiian Koa...curly Koa especially...but the grain and features in this piece are just beautiful!!!...👍
Thank you very much. I have 2 nice pieces of Koa and one is curly. The are both boards but I will do something with them. A friend had some sent to me from Hawaii and I did make two segmented turnings out of some of it. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Ken. It was a tough call as the glass I did have was too tall and I did not want that for sure. But I think you are right if it was the right glass it might look good looking through the window. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you very much. I was not happy with myself when I choose not to use it for what I had planned and just waiting for the right thing to make. I know I wanted to keep a lot of those features. I am happy with how it turned out. Thanks for watching, Gary
Hi Gary, how are you, it was good to see you again, take care and stay safe, I hope you and your family have a really good merry Christmas and a really truly wonderful new year x
Thank you Maria. I have another piece where there will be a lot of nature left in it. Not sure how much it will be liked but it will be interesting. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Huw. It as very generous of Phil to give me the Olive Wood. The LaserPecker 2 was so easy to setup and engrave the bottom I just had to do it. Take care my friend, Gary

That's great, Gary. Olive wood is so beautiful and when you put the finish on, the grain really pops. I remember when Phil had you in his shop (his special guest). Bill
Thank you Bill. Yes Olive is one of the nicest for sure. And my wife really loves Olive wood as well. That was a very special day up there at Shady Acres. Thanks for watching, Gary
Love the natural look. It could not be matched by a painting artist. You use a Forstner bit to bore holes. Would it not be faster and cheaper to use a spade bit? Have a great day?
Thank you very much. I think the fact the spade bit only has to cutting edges it would not work so well. Not only not with the cutting but it would be very jerky when each blade hit the wood. Thanks for watching, Gary
You sir, are an artist! When you started the turning and decided to leave the bark inclusion intact, I wondered why. I didn't think it would look good. But you had the vision to see the final vessel and I'm glad you did. That feature makes the piece POP!! Thanks so much for sharing. That was a great performance, Gary. Simply making great calls at the right times. But, I was thinking, sometimes turning is a bit like fishing. You can prepare everything in your control, but not always know what's under the surface. In this case it was even more beautiful figure. I really appreciate how great both finish areas look, the majority turned and the live edges. Reminds me of an inversion of Phil's, whose often have more live edge. And about him and all of you RUclipsr friends, you make this feel more connected as a community when you mention each other and share materials or ideas in your videos. So, thanks for that. :)
Thank you very much Jay. As a fisherman I like your comparison. I have spent hours on the river not knowing if there was anything in the water or hiding behind a rock. Salmon and steelhead are good for that. Like wood turning those hidden things are a real joy when they happen. Thanks for watching, Gary
Outstanding! Olivewood is some of the most beautiful in the world, and you coaxed this small piece to its full potential. Thanks for saving the bark inclusions which add so much character!
You and Phil saved this and let this wonderful tree live on!
Thank you Michael. It would be a shame to have seen this wood get burned. But I am sure a lot of it does end up as firewood.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
