It's a shame you aren't closer to Baxter's garage in Georgia, I know you are happy with Dave but I can tell you you wouldn't have .007" crank runout in an engine with 140 hp coming out of Baxter's , that's for sure. Hopefully that crank is welded and balanced because with that much horsepower you'll be grenading it again in no time if it isn't. Can't wait to see how it comes out, should be a beast.
You have your bike already torn down. If Dave is not capable of zeroing out & welding your crank to no tolerance, send it out to someone who knows about Harley engine building performance, S&S, Revolution, etc. Any reputable Harley engine builder knows that .006 to .012 run out is too much tolerance for any high performance build. I guess what I'm saying is Do It Right the First Time.
You can ride all day, no matter the air temperature, as long as you are constantly moving. People ride air-cooled bikes in the desert all year round. Looking forward to see what becomes of this build.
It’s a little ironic, we’re discussing scorched cylinder walls on a high horsepower air cooled motor, while there is a high horsepower water cooled bike sitting in the background. Literally staring at radiator from the headlight stretching all the way to the ground.
Did the builders not have possible overheating in mind to let you know you need to add some type of cooling system for such things as high traffic areas? like most motorcycle owners especially NYC type traffic.
I would highly recommend a dark horse crank and timkin bearing conversion. I’m afraid if you don’t, you’ll have major issues with the motor. Talk to Dan or Adam at Zipper’s and they’ll probably recommend it as well.
Not only the love Jugs I would place a larger oil cooler with a Thundermax oil cooler fan Keeping the Oil cool is the key to high temps and I would consider Oil change to AMSOIL too
One of the things i like about you is you appear to be Honest and Realistic, many a high performance harley owner will tell me how they smoked an R1 or a Busa, and you clearly like to have fun but your honest, BUT that being said the fact that you built a monster motor is more than likely the reason it got hot enough to blow the rings, the Bigger people keep building harley's the Hotter they get and for the track it's not a problem, every couple runs down the Strip and the motor gets rebuilt, and so many street riders build race harley's and wonder why they don't go 100k miles, why there was No Warranty on bikes over the Jims 120 when i was a manager in the TC88 Era, clearly you know how to go fast with the Duc lol
silverback will need to be called KING KONG with those plans! for now since the oil is sauce we can call it the BIG RAGU 🤣. Big things ahead brother. vader is awesome!!!!! that sport glide is snazzy too! 😎
John, You have one chance to build this correctly. Do not put that much power on your stock crank. Dark Horse crank, line bore the cases, and build the perfect engine. Some have mentioned Kevin Baxter who I follow closely. That is who will be building my engine in another 15,000 miles. Zippers obviously know their stuff and your man Dan sounds like he has you covered.
Definitely add the Love jugs and run Amsoil along with the oil cooler you're adding. Hope you get her back soon and I really hope youre safe and your family and friends are safe from the storm that just passed through.
I guess you'll have to buy a convertible if you can't ride your motorcycle in the SUMMER TIME! Go back to stage II and ride all day and night no matter what the temp is outside.
The exact same thing happened to my 2019 Road Glide that had the Zipper's 128 Sleeper Kit in it. So I went with the ZIppers 128 Muscle with the stage 4 heads and 550 Cam. The thing is a monster now. I am getting 150hp/150tq.
As said prior, I would not do any big inch build with out a complete Darkhorse bottom end.Had them do mine on a build in like early 17 ran that motor for 18000 miles no issues. They do complete builds and are pro builders.I was excited about doing a 124 crate motor thinking that this would eliminate the Crank run out.Spoke to John who told be if you want buy the motor but send it here first.I asked he said nothing was fixed I have a shop full of them! Kept my numbers matching new DH block and traded it in 2020 with 42 k on the OD and got top dollar. For this discussion I would NOT rebore those jugs everything fresh and new. Also a Fueling oil pump, cam chest,These big inch builds are a hassle. stage 2 is all I need. Warranty smooth and quiet.I love drag racing look in the trailers that rack of spare motors is there for a reason .Good Luck
My '20 SGS build [retaining HD warranty and EPA (& California) complaint], I did the SE 114-to-117 Stage 4 kit with SE high-flow exhaust (cats in mufflers), Thundermax Fan added to OE oil cooler (ECM enabled by HD dealer), added the HD rear cylinder fan (auto temp control) and ventilated the crankcase with a Fueling billet oil dip stick; Tuning is the HD SE Tuners (2), utilizing wideband 18mm O2 sensors. I have a Trask Transmission Cover to vent the crankcase which I'll be installing on my '21 CVO SG. If I lived outside of Ca., I would have done a 114-to-128 Kit -or-the S&S 131 Stroker Kit (4.250" bore x 4.625" stroke) and probably went with the S&S 540 Torque Cam (a 590 Power Cam also available from S&S). As I believe that you can not over ventilate an air/oil cooled engine, thinking about adding a top end ventilation (to prevent any oily mist from being drawn back into the engine via the Air Cleaner). An Oil Temperature Gauge for monitoring the oil temperature in real time?
Man, that sucks, hoping for a good outcome with minimal damage....I had some heat issues climbing Mnt. Washington, I shut it down a couple of times when it hit 300, I was running my FP3 at the time so I was watching the temps, 🤞🏻
Sorry to hear you blew your motor John. But it was great meeting you that night. I have the Love Jugs on my Street Glide. They make a difference in traffic.
John, I know that you are bummed out that Silverback is down but let me tell you bro that you have an awesome attitude about it. Things happen that we sometimes don't anticipate and that is part of life. We live and learn from our mistakes. Dave at JD cycleworks, is the miracle worker and I'm sure Silverback will come back better and stronger than before just like the six million dollar man. Hope you get Silverback back soon and I hope to ride with you and the fellas soon 😊
Sorry to here about your motor problems. Been there and done that. I would recommend doing a Darkhorse crank while it’s tore down. I didn’t the first time and twisted the crank and destroyed the entire motor. Good luck.
Just like my old 2009 build. Fried my rings. Was a 103. Then. Put stock 96 cylinders back onfor the summer. And sent my cylinders to hillside cycle bord out to 107 And the heat caused one lifter roller to spall a couple small pieces off added jagg oil cooler with fan after that. Very surprised how often the fan ran especially around town. Oil temp stayed about 205 all the time even in heavy traffic. Had I kept the bike. I would also added love jug mighty mites. Still trying to figure out what I'll do on my 2021 CVO water cooled heads on it. But still think more cooling wouldn't hurt
7/1000's run out is not acceptable ... S&S requires 5 or less ... I know some people stick with the stock cam cover with a screaming eagle pump but I wonder if the extra oil flow from an S&S or Fueling oil pump would help with oil cooled heads along with a fan.
I run Amsoil in all three holes on my bike and have the fan assisted oil cooler. I am not sure how it would hold to to 2 hours stop and go traffic but I have more confidence in Amsoil taking the heat. Love Jugs would help for sure if you can handle the look. I agree with everyone on the crank run out I would do a bottom up build with a Dark Horse crank. That's what Zippers did with Traveling Talls last 124 upgrade.
7k is pretty high for crank took mine out at 3k runout put a welded crank in not sure what oil pump and cam plate you are running but I have a fueling one and max runout on it is less then 5k
Question: How much, if any of this issue, is covered by Zippers warranty? Could get expensive to have a big build meltdown. Not sure who's to blame, if they didn't demand the 128 kit have to have Luv Jugs, or similar fan cooling. You seem to speak as if you're eating all this, but not talking about cost of failure at such low miles, and a new rebuild for the average consumer. Breaking the bank. My condolences to Silverback 1.0
I always enjoy watching your videos I hope you get silverback running better than ever very soon so you can make your schedule trips ride safe and enjoy
So sorry to hear that it was a worst case scenario. My smoking issues ended up being clogged crankcase breather bolts. I must have gotten some anti seize on them when I installed the Highflow air cleaner. Looking forward to you getting Silverback up and running again. Maybe you can have a Silverback welcome back ride to the bikes and breakfast. I'd consider riding to Lodi and join you and the Jersey crew. That would be "Epic" and could make for some good content! Sometime in November I'm sure. Ride safe ride often and keep motovlogging!! Glen
I don’t know john I live in Brooklyn there is never any traffic 😂 I think you wanted to build something new for the new year 😂😂😂. Joking brother definitely looking forward to the new build and hopefully get to run into before the end of riding season
That's a bummer, sorry to hear, im sure it will be stronger, faster when reworked. As far as oil, I would suggest go with an old skool MC oil, something with high zinc/phosphorus, zzdp, these oil will cling and hold up in high heat. Check out Pen Grade 1. Try welding on zinc platted steel, it won't. Just my 2 cents. Good luck to ya and keep up the great job.
You will be the first one to get it actually installed….because I already bought and paid for that kit with the stage 4 heads and full kit from Zipper’s….my appointment at Dave’s is January 24th….that was his earliest appointment for regular guys😂😂😂…the numbers they said was 160-170 torque and 162 hp
Sorry John. I wonder what if you had a twin cooled engine. I know they cool only around the exhaust valves but it might have been helpful. Nevertheless, you needed an excuse for muscle build, here you have it 😎
One of the Sturgis videos Shows Adam Adam starting a touring Harley .basically he starts in the morning and lets it idle all day with Amsoil and a set of. Lug Jugs.
Yes I watched his video aswell. That has got me considering the same set up. Just not sure about warranty running a non Harley-Davidson oil. @amsoiladam
So I have an exact issue with my S&S 128 build on my 2019 road glide special. Cylinder walls scored after 2600 miles. Replacing with new 128 kit. I am also getting my heads redone since they had to tear it all the way down. I live in Arizona where its always over 110 degrees and I have the thundermax oil cooler fan. Wonder if it is an S&S issue or wrong ring specs provided. Good luck, I am interested how your's gets figured out.......I feel your pain...
your bike is bad ass and sounds like you about to make it even better.. Good luck with that bro and check out Amsoil adam on you tube. it sounds like you need a set of he's love jugs and some AMS Oil and your bike won't over heat no matter where you ride or how you ride.

Agree! .002 or lower from Kevin Baxter. Amzoil is a great oil. I’ll let there specs speak for it selves.
KB is the shiznit
Kevin is my guy too.
I use amsoil in my 2017 RGS used it in all m bikes will not brake down at high temperature
You kidding
The six million dollar man was my favorite show back in the 70's. Can't wait to see her john, peace brother..

Just curious, did it still have the rear cylinder deactivation to help with heat issues?
I googled “love jugs”. I’m not sure how they would work to help cool your bike, but looking forward to seeing them on your channel!

I hated going through the GWB, that sucks man but glad there wasn't even more damage than there was
I dunno... sounds like it was a genius plan to get a massive upgrade past the wife... much respect

Twin Cams and M8s were designed to be left stock.
Harley wants you to trade them in for the latest, biggest, new "improved" models.

Its these painful lessons that really stick. Good on ya for sharing so others have a heads up!
Love jugs are a game changer! (.Y.)
Oh man, I’m sorry to hear about the damage but I can’t wait to see the upgrades.
It will be back. Stronger. More protected. That being said. I don't ride in temps above 80 degrees. But that's just me.
Really? Hahahah
Good Luck On the New Build, Like I always say one door slams another one opens. Hope to met you soon.
Good luck, excited to see the new build completed!
At least you know the damage and you can move forward from there. Good luck with the new build.
Man, that sucks, hoping for a good outcome with minimal damage....I had some heat issues climbing Mnt. Washington, I shut it down a couple of times when it hit 300, I was running my FP3 at the time so I was watching the temps, 🤞🏻
Good ol’ sky screamer lady…. Every time I see her my heart smiles.
Turning the beast into a monster hellcat cruiser.
Good luck, looking forward to that rebuild.
Wonder if it has anything to do with the Zipper’s cylinder walls being significantly slimmer then the others on the market. 😱
Sorry to hear you blew your motor John. But it was great meeting you that night. I have the Love Jugs on my Street Glide. They make a difference in traffic.

Thanks for the update. You can rename Silverback to Steve Austin! He’s going to be better than ever, Muscle 128, WOW!
Big John You have the right attitude. Just what my golf game needs🤔
Ultracool. makes a dual fan that bolts to the oil cooler. I have a S&S 124" and I installed it when I did the motor.
So sorry to hear that it was a worst case scenario. My smoking issues ended up being clogged crankcase breather bolts. Very sad new. Hope you’ll be back on the road as soon as possible, your videos are great! Hail from Italy.
You definitely need that oil and engine cooler system. Oil cooler and love jugs double fan.
I don’t know john I live in Brooklyn there is never any traffic 😂 I think you wanted to build something new for the new year 😂😂😂. Joking brother definitely looking forward to the new build and hopefully get to run into before the end of riding season
I’m going to be at the tail of the dragon in a week. Any suggestions on what routes I should focus on?
Good luck on the rebuild on Silverback John.
Love Jugs work like a champ... I highly recommend them.

REALLY GOOD LUCK..Fan going to solve ur problem...funny shit...
Seeing lots of flooding in NJ from Ida. Your family ok? How about Sandy? Hope all is well.
Do the Dark Horse Crank. Loose the counterbalancer. It will suit your riding style.
Would the motor in the stock configuration have had the same issue?
No
Sorry John. I wonder what if you had a twin cooled engine. I know they cool only around the exhaust valves but it might have been helpful. Nevertheless, you needed an excuse for muscle build, here you have it 😎

Best of luck. It's going to be a beast.
Hey John, I'm telling u run those love jugs on there. I run them on my bike. All NYPD bikes come with them now.
Was the problem the stock engine or because it was bored out. I'm asking because I'm thinking of buying a road glide
Good job explaining.
You have a s&S cam plate max runout is 5 1/2 thousand on that plate need to look into redoing your bottom end.
Look at I think the Jim’s fan,it looks like the horn and I think the horn is built in
You coming down to Gastonia or are you shipping it all???
glad i do my own engines lot cheaper that way but i dont tour on big inch motors either
Use Amsoil
Curious, was it Valveline Mineral or synthetic oil?
Did you mention oil!!! Sorry to hear that John.
Love jugs are supposed to cure all that??
Do you have a stock cam plate in there ?
your bike is bad ass and sounds like you about to make it even better.. Good luck with that bro and check out Amsoil adam on you tube. it sounds like you need a set of he's love jugs and some AMS Oil and your bike won't over heat no matter where you ride or how you ride.
Going to a bigger displacement on a Harley engine is a waste of money considering your sportbike has more top end speed, better handling and costs less.
OH YEAHHH. THE 6 MILLION DOLLAR RG.
2:46 diagnoses
Bionic Man boy you crazy lmao😆🤣😂...
Hell I would go ahead & do a Dark horse crank With timken bearing conv. & that silver bitch would be bullet proof & a ROCKET!
Nice moves, saweeeet bikes
AMSOIL 20 - 50 and oil cooler. No jugs fans.. waste of money... You can't beat AMSOIL SYNTHETIC!!!!!!
it's a 100 plus all summer here.
Haha! I watched that show every week back in the day!
May 15th?
It's all good!
And use amsoil....
Bragging rights come at a cost...
At a certain point it becomes 10k for every second you want to drop off your ET... good luck with what your looking to do...
My question is how much can your lower end cases withstand being they're stock HD parts... before they detonate...?
That still comes on tv
You need love judges to keep 😎 cooler
Make it bigger👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Just slap a turbo or supercharger on it for 5gs for over 200HP and call it good…. You could even throw the original pistons and cylinders back on.
Parade mode
So that means your changing Silverback’s name to Steve Austin ?
😂
Bionic Silverback 👍🏼
That totally sux! If it’s torn down just do the crank. True and weld and timken bearing conversion or a dark horse. Then you can do an S&S or Feuling pump and plate. No fans or oil cooler needed. Just saying…
Amsoil.
@Jeff Laura Smart man
Good thing you didn’t do that burnout.
@@CYCLEFANATIX Might as well get the 131 crate motor now...
