I lost some nice ammonites to pyrite flaking and a bunch of my recent Isle of Wight fossils like an amazing eye of wood to pyrite disease. And as you said even after applying Paraloid a day later it was back.
I have several pyrite Cephalopods from NY from the Devonian Period infested with this form of oxidation. Dorfan toy model Railroad die cast zink train engine bodies have a form of deterioration similar to this form of slow oxidation that will ultimately reduce the toy to crumbling powder. It's called Zink Pest to toy train hobby enthusiasts. I have one Dorfan train set that I keep, and I must keep it in a low humidity environment. As for my fossils, I usually coat them in Paleobond 100 to stop pyrite fossils from disintegration.

I’ve lost some excellent specimens to it.
