    This is a perfect tutorial, I just fried my Rockford Fosgate Amp this weekend after blasting my subs for too long. I took it apart and their wasn't too much left of the heatsink compound. The 4 mosfet power transistors are defiantly fried, I'll use your skillet technique to remove them. Thanks for posting this, gives me some confidence that i can actually fix the amp.

    And that's the joy of fixing it. Awesome repair. You had no idea that these RF amps are very popular, even a little 'old school' car audio starting to become more popular. You did notice the quality of the equipment at the end of the video.

    I will say i have not seen any amps with "transistor blocks" before and i have been repairing amps for quite some time. Excellent work by the way.

    Nice fix, Rockford Fosgates are good amps. I'm glad there are folks out there who choose to fix broken electronics vs just throwing it in the landfill. I'm the same way.

    Beautiful amp, and great work getting her going again. In case you haven't already found out, the bolt ears on each side are for plates/wings that cover the wiring for a clean install. Would love having this amp. Again, Great Job! Can't beat old school Fosgate.

    Great video! I have been into car stereo since 1990. I own 5 of these old school Rockford Fosgate Punch amps and still use them all daily in my vehicles. I also own a newer Class D Rockford. They have always been the top end! SQ is always second to none

    Thanks for making this video. I just bought the same type of amp and one of the Mosfets was completely destroyed. It is a punch 150@2. I also have punch 120@2 and a punch 360@II. These are awesome amps. I'm not an electrician by any means, but I think I'm going to try to replace the Mosfet myself. Thanks again.

    You are correct those tabs are for mounting plastic endcaps to hide all the speaker/power connectors. Those were probably one of the last series of amps to be manufactured by Fosgate in the U.S. once Bestbuy got their little gruby hands on Fosgate it was all over.

    I have one of these too that I got going today, i had to replace all transistors, but anyway it worked perfectly for several hours and then the left channel blew up while I was jamming out. And it turns out there's a really advanced problem with the driver circuit for the left channel, its not something I can repair since it requires SMD soldering which I'm unable to do. So now I have a single channel Rockford fosgate amp :) It still has enough power even with only one good channel. I tried swapping the FETs again, but it instantly blew them again. So I'm calling that amp my "singlerockfos amp". XD just thought I would share that with ya :)

    those amps were really good back in the day. they would pound any sub you put on them. rockford always underrated their amps. these and older fockford amps. newer amps suck imo,well except for the high dollar amps.

  • @kskate91
    @kskate91 12 лет назад

    I've repaired a lot of these on my own. What I use is a small butane torch works great on soldering and desoldering the MOSFETs. What you there is a easy fix. The 4 MTP50N06Vs you can replace with IRFZ44 or IRF3205, and if your using 3205 change the gate resistors to 47 ohms the originals are to high. And make sure the drivers are producing the 5 - 4 ~ volts to drive the ps fets.

    You know, I was fortunate to be exposed to really fine audiophile equipment at an fairly early age and I can tell you that once you've heard that level of audio reproduction, you know when you hear it again. I just did, that amp was great.. kudos on those bench speakers too.

    Those 8" Eminence drivers and Philips domes just keep impressing me! They're so clear and work so well together! I'm quite shocked by the bass also, it's quite deep considering I think they're the Beta 8 drivers. If they're Beta 8 they should go down to 80 Hz or so. Your electronic skills are superb! You're making me want to learn more and more about this stuff! I have a battered up PA amp here that I need to fix and I'm so stuck :(

    As it's a Punch 360aII it's the Best Buy version, the ones sold by authorised RF dealers are Punch 360a2. It's only giving 45 watts to each of your speakers as they are 8 ohm. The amp is bridgeable for 360w RMS on a 4 ohm sub.

    • @kskate91
      @kskate91 8 лет назад +2

      Just got one of these. It uses the same board as, punch 360.2, 400S, 450S, 451S, punch 401S all similar boards. Good amps will power most subs

    I'm really happy for you man. I had the smoke incident happen to my car stereo due to grounding short, so I know exactly how it feels when you fix something that's otherwise just scrap plastic and parts. I'll try troubleshooting that board next year (2017). Wish me luck.

    Being the party that's attacked in a flame war is no joy. I understood what you said; and I do wish I had gotten an in person listen to the amp in a properly set up room with speakers optimally placed and working perfectly. It's not a perfect world. I won't say that amp is the finest I've ever heard, but I'd probably have the same opinion of it if it WERE in the perfect listening room. You perhaps have the more nuanced ear, a true audiophile. I must be content with my amateur status ; D

    I have a band you might enjoy, they were the first to record directly to digital with minimal use of overdubs and the majority of their music was performed, recorded and mixed "live" to the recorder. They are an audiophiles dream. If you like new experiences they are that. With a dynamic range like nothing I have ever heard since. The name of the Band is Flim & the BB's. They are all consummate musicians. A good example of their music is Tricycle, a version of it on RUclips to give you an idea

  • @Maxxarcade
    @Maxxarcade  12 лет назад +1

    Sometimes you can use slightly higher rated transistors, but they would need to have very similar characteristics and conduction curves to work properly. It depends on the preamp/driver stage design in the amp.
    With this one, the original parts were obsolete, so I had to use a different brand with the same ratings.

    you could use that plate to heat it up to the solders melting point and you can then just pick the parts off and then clean up the pads . after that you can apply solider past to the parts for the new mosfets, and put it in and oven just a little over the solders melting point and it will melt the solder and it will not harm the mosfets. or use a het gun to do it also and with the pan you can use it as your preheater when placing the parts also both ways will work.

    Those are some of the best amps ever made, pre China. 90's for that one. Typically the heat sync compound dries out over 20 years and that's what fries the fets, otherwise they rarely burn out.

  • @Maxxarcade
    @Maxxarcade  12 лет назад

    No, car amps are sensitive because they always have their gain way up. The volume is normally controlled by the car stereo.
    In this case it was loud because I'm using an M-Audio Delta 44 sound card, which has a pretty high output signal compared to most consumer line level stuff.

  • @flash001USA
    @flash001USA 10 лет назад +4

    Nice repair. I quit working on stuff like this 20 years ago because these amps are all junk and once they blow they really aren't worth repairing if you do electronic repair for a living but you're doing this just for your own pleasure so that I can understand. A good thing to always do before you hook speakers up is to measure both outputs for any DC voltage because with a split supply you can have good output transistors but have a faulty OP amp that is either blown or leaking a DC voltage to the final stages. If you have a scope, look for any high frequency oscillations on the output too. I've seen amps burn themselves up along with the tweeters with the silent killer oscillations outside the audio range.

    Not the cleanest listening experience with YT; YT is MOSTLY crap audio and surely multiple conversions have left their mark. But it's refreshing for me to hear something that is obviously producing quality sound. It's purely subjective, but then using FFT analysis or even A-weighted sound pressure isn't going to tell the whole story, and only the human ear can tell whether or not a passage of audio sounds right. I'm sorry if it offends you that I think that amp/speakers combo sounds great.

    I have the model 551s, I started de-soldering the mosfets on the right side where black soot had collected on the metal casing, i diode tested the 2 IRF3205 and got good readings, just over 0.5V on both of them, so im a little confused where the soot came from. There is only one transistor that i can barely see the numbers and has some melted solder on it, it is on the upper left side 2nd from the top, IRF3540 i think. the 4 IRF3205 all had melted solder on their heat sinks.

    Well I have been using the amplifier but I've noticed some problems with it. It's a Phonic MAR 2, quite a cheap amp, only like 230W RMS per channel @ 4 ohms. But it was used in a nightclub for many years. When powering on everything is fine. But I've noticed if you don't let the amp warm up a little and you just crank it, it distorts, even if it's not clipping. In addition, when the amps cold and you power it off, it makes the right speakers bang, but when been on for a while it's fine?
