“Becoming Abolitionists”: Derecka Purnell on Why Police Reform Is Not Enough to Protect Black Lives

- Derecka Purnell draws from her experience as a human rights lawyer in her new book, published this month, “Becoming Abolitionists: Police, Protests, and the Pursuit of Freedom,” to argue that police reform is an inadequate compromise to calls for abolition. Since the murders of George Floyd in Minneapolis and Breonna Taylor in Louisville in 2020, many states have passed laws aimed at reforming police, but congressional talks at the federal level have broken down. Purnell reflects upon her personal journey as a Black woman who believed in police reform before pivoting to abolition, saying, “I became a part of social movements who pushed me to think more critically … about building a world without violence and how to reduce our reliance on police.”

I used to advocate for reform...back in 2016..but these past few years have shown us that we cannot fix a rotten institution.

Yes. I’m my opinion we need to advocate for a more holistic approach. One that allows and give the chance to offenders rehabilitate and see the other side of the story.
For those who unfortunately can’t rehabilitate due to serious cognitive issues ( serial killers, sociopaths, and so on) then those are the ones that should be institutionalized and also offered a more individualized services.

@@jrshield7793 I don't think we'd "lose her to politics" because, look at the vast majority of people in politics. They have been in the game for generations, they have not been elected by the people, they have been elected by each other through funding (advertisements of their campaigns etc) and because people do not have the time nor political education adequate to properly participate in local governments (which is by no means an accident; there's a reason that a bunch of law school consists of literally just learning how to read the damn papers).
That being said, I don't think she should become a politician unless she wants to. I think she's contributed more than enough already through her advocacy through her book and these interviews, and I think it's our turn now, as the people who live in the United States, to pick up the slack now and to begin participating in our local governments (if possible) to carry on her work. She is no more capable of dissolving this horrific institution by herself as _any_ of us would be acting alone as individuals. Despite what media tries to convince us, there is no such thing as a solitary leader. The only worthwhile change that comes about comes about with the support of the people ✊🏼✊🏼

I must read the book. I'm eager to see if more ideas and details it provides will contribute to the transformation of the presumed, ancient model in the US, of gun-carrying "force" of police officers, into more useful, more safe, more economically viable, more uplifting and supporting of communities.
It seems reasonable to expect that real data from insurance policy writers (sometimes just wealthy individual investors), real data from community treasurers, lawyers, and real surveys in live testimonies from spouses and families of current/past model police, that the risks and the labor can be reasonably re-planned, re-distributed, to reduce physical harm, continue to protect people and property (with more reasonable balance of risks to each) and with more cost-effective basis to community results desired.
With so much more inexpensive technologies for remote viewing, remote monitoring, and multiple channels of communication, pursuits of idiots on roads/highways/freeway can be done without additional risk to local drivers and property, reduced use gunpowder-using weapons/rifles and unsafe, unreliable pistols can be held for back-up use, with more calm, specially trained/practiced officers (or just use of more remote, armed vehicles/drones). Everybody involved can benefit and be happier, and safer than we are now - IF we use open trial measures of changes, with fair, reliable, accounting and monitoring, and see the shifting, changing roles/jobs/duties/unions/pay basis and proportion of measures of success (rather than the stupid statistic desired by "law & order" political candidates of "number of cops on the job". The definition and meaning of "policing" can be better, public safety officers with distinct, specified roles, none of which requires patterns of results of community harm, abuse, or even default systemic bias. Or an armed aggressive driver? And those who are not successfully to be rehabilitated then what do we do with them? Good question: stolen items. My guitar was stolen. They sell it at pawn shops with police cameras recording each exchange. Yet 1500-1700 of these exchanges occur each month with no arrests and no return of goods. Do the math…the thieves know the cops and have a deal. I tested this hypothesis on a thieves ring in my town- Irish Catholic orphan kids. The Irish cops responded to my report of loss in minutes. They knew this gang, talk to them 4 times a week outside my door.

Her answer about what we should do about serious crimes like rape and murder was completely unsatisfactory. As much as I would like policing and its funding severely slashed, we will always need a small amount of cops and jails. An 80-90% reduction is a fairer goal than complete abolition and it doesn't give the same sound bite to the right.
We need to build another system approach. Based on cognitive neuroscience people that perpetuate violent acts come from very deep troubling family dynamics and many have chemical imbalances which made them prone to violence and other types of acts.
We can modify the system and build one in which these people have access to mental health treatments and other resources available to either rehabilitate or manage it. Not everyone can be rehabilitated but at least we can give the opportunity to those that can to see life from another perspective and change their cognitive dissonance and integrate better in our society.
