NYC Subway: (N) Trains Terminating at Queensboro Plaza

  • Today we are at Queensboro Plaza in Long Island City (Queens) on a Saturday afternoon.
    Because of construction, there was no (N) train service between Manhattan and Queensboro Plaza. Therefore, (N) trains from Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard terminated at Queensboro Plaza on the lower level platform.
    Besides terminating (N) trains, this film also shows some (7) trains on both the lower and upper levels of this fascinating elevated subway station.
    Enjoy!
    Filmed on 4 April, 2015.

    Fun fact:the (7) train is the only train in the whole NYCT system with 11 car sets all other trains have 10 or less

    The platforms that the N and W trains now use were once used by Second Avenue elevated trains which crossed the East River on the Queensboro Bridge before service ended in 1942. In October 1949 the former BMT half of the station was abandoned and the tracks rerouted so that BMT trains served Astoria and IRT trains from Times Square served the Flushing line. The old platforms and elevated structure were torn down in the early 1960s. There is a double crossover on the upper level east of the station which is the only track connection from the 7 line to the rest of the subway system. Work trains and trains in transit to Coney Island or 207th St. shops for repairs use this connection.

    • @TheRailLeaguer
      @TheRailLeaguer 5 лет назад +2

      murray1575 That crossover is also used to transfer equipment onto and off the 7 line, like in 2002, when the R62As were transferred onto the 7 line to retire the Redbird cars, and just recently when the R62As were transferred off the 7 line for CBTC installation.

    ad 骆伟焜: Don't worry, your English is excellent. It's true that the last shot of the film shows a particularly slow moving train. I believe the reason is that its tail is still moving through the tight curve that comes right after the station. The usual travel speeds are somewhat higher. I don't live in a suburb, but I'd imagine that it can take quite some time to reach downtown. The infrastructure here is very old and under heavy stress (the subway runs 24 hours a day), so trains usually don't go as fast as they could be.

      Why did MTA make the queensboro plaza station share the IRT With the BMT?

    • @SimonS44
      @SimonS44 8 лет назад

      +Mintu Chowdhury The station was built when the MTA did not exist yet. It was just the indepented, private companies of IRT and BMT. The station was built like that, because in the beginning IRT trains also ran to Ditmars Blvd and BMT trains also ran to Flushing, later this was abandoned, but it would have been dumb to rebuild Queensboro Plaza station

    • @professorhineschoice

      Close... the gaps are too big for IRT trains at BMT stations.

    • @JonathanChan212
      @JonathanChan212 5 лет назад

      Well, think about BMT trains at the IRT stations will look like. The IND/BMT trains are 10 feet wide, and the IRT trains are 8 feet wide. So if you put them on the IRT platforms , I think the paltform is broken. But if you are doing the opposite, then the gap is a little bit far. And also the length of the trains. IND/BMT trains, too long at the IRT platforms; IRT trains, too short at the IND/BMT platforms. So let's say they are going back to their original lines.

    I don't think I'd ever be able to ride on the NYC subway. From what I see, there is a map available for the trains, but they rarely stick to it; also the local-express part confuses me a lot. Why would a train skip stations, when *do* they skip stations; it just seems so difficult to find my way around!

    • @Luftschlange
      @Luftschlange  8 лет назад +2

      +TheBandicootCrash Seriously? 5 million people manage to find their ways around every day. Don't worry :-)

    • @TheBandicootCrash
      @TheBandicootCrash 8 лет назад

      +Luftschlange i dont know... I guess it's because it's much different from what I have in my country because NYC is so dynamic. Over here there's 15 fixed routes and that's it! Haha

    • @Luftschlange
      @Luftschlange  8 лет назад +3

      +TheBandicootCrash Well, routes are fixed in NYC too. Only for construction there may be alterations. Most of the time services run according to the displayed map.

    • @TheBandicootCrash
      @TheBandicootCrash 8 лет назад

      +Luftschlange really? Perhaps I got some various videos I watched confused; but what does it mean when a train is a local, but runs, say, Bronx express? And such?

    • @bormisha
      @bormisha 8 лет назад +2

      It's actually very simple. Some trains skip stations because it allows a faster travel. It is known in advance which trains are express and which are local. Say, lines 4, 5 and 6 in Manhattan have the same ("green") route. Of them, 4 and 5 are always express whereas 6 is always local. So if you have to travel a long way across Manhattan and you are approaching a platform, you'd rather take 4 or 5 train because it's faster.
      Usually there are 4 tracks along each line, of them two are for the local trains that stop at all stations and another two tracks are for the express trains. Those stations where the express trains stop have 4 platforms whereas local stations have only 2 platforms, letting the express trains pass at high speed without having a danger to hurt anyone.

    • @SOSOwner

      And those old R32/R46 trains have to run to the Rockaways since the MTA doesn't want the newer trains to be damaged by the sea air. That's why you only see R160's and R179's going to Lefferts Blvd.
