Keep them sound effects coming. I had a good laugh watching this when the sound effects were on. Regarding this scope, I actually have one of these here. I would be lost without it. I used it to troubleshoot a car cassette player one day. Found the trouble very quickly.

That is not a bad scope, considering the price. I have one and it performs well above 100MHz. I have tested with my RF signal generator at 110MHz sinusoidal and it triggers the wave without issues and at 78mV RMS amplitude, around 30% down of what the generator is supplying.
The bandwidth should be measured in sinewave, not squarewave, but you know this. I just mention it because some people believe that if a scope can not show a "perfect" square wave at 20MHz, then it is limited to around that "frequency", and this is plain wrong.
A square wave is composed of a large series of sinusoidal waves, and when a scope manufacturer states that a bandwidth value is 100MHz, they are referring to a sinusoidal wave, not a square wave, and this has nothing to do with the brand of the scope.

They go up to the sepcified bandwidth no problems. Accuracy is not like your Tektronix, but for a cheap scope they work well. Even being cheap, you get your monies worth with these. There is are other versions in different bandwidths, and they seem to meet the specs. They are about half the price now compared to the price when this video was made 4 years ago

I just got the 4 channel version of this scope which is the SDS1104 since you replied that Owon scopes are pretty decent in another video, and I gotta thank you cause the scope really is pretty damn good for the price and it was even $100 cheaper than the Rigol 1054Z. Amazing how crisp and bright the screen is on the Owon (doesn't really come across on video) and it works really well and I love that it doesn't have any obnoxious fans humming in the background
Considering they are using near identical model names to the Siglent scopes it was a bit of a red flag to me initially but clearly Owon makes decent stuff, absolutely a phenomenal 4 channel scope for the price and I'm surprised there isn't more coverage on them cause I could definitely see it being a Rigol killer and the 1054Z has been on the market for maybe a bit too long anyway

Hello, thankful for the review. I was quite happy about the layout and working of the unit until... you opened it up. It looks way too cheap to function reliably when measuring reliability and service life is concerned.
Perhaps I am wrong but even the power supply section looks quite dreadful. Did it make it to the second year?
I am on the market for a scope and I don't really know if I'll throw my money on something like this or the copy from Hanmatek. I am certainly a beginner but once I begin I make frequent use of my tools and I feel like buying this it might last me a couple of years without component failure before I'll have to buy something more decent, something that I should have bought in the first place to have the peace of mind of more robust measurements and prolonged service life.

Hello! I'm still searching for the model I want to buy. But I guess that this OWON is better than that low budget FNIRSI, isn't it? At least it's powered by a PSU, not from an external "phone charger". And they've put metal thread insertions in the case instead of a raw plastic. I've seen how you've broke that case in another review.
Yeah, the cageless PSU looks aweful... But at least they've put radiators on the processing units. Hantek doesn't do that :D And their similar model(s) is more expensive.
My main concern... Do I need a function generator if I'll be working with small BJT transistors?
Also the main thing I want to know: how good is this (SDS1102) scope measuring DC voltages below 1v? Another review (with comparison) did show that Hantek and FNIRSI are in "anywhere than the actual value" range in terms of low DC measuring.

One dozen cheap scopes < one good scope. I have a Rigol MSO1104Z with all options. It does a lot very well, but falls short for serious SPI or I2C troubleshooting. Falls short on Math functions too. And there are a few things that my ancient Hitachi V-1050F still does better such as X-Y timebase. Knowing what I know now, I would have saved up for the MSO5104 with all options at twice the price. Thanks for the review.

For square waves (and high frequencies) you need a 50 ohm termination at the scope input, otherwise, like you said, the coax becomes resonant and looks like ringing. btw, risetime should be 0.35 / freq response of the scope (and probe with the probe usually increasing total bandwidth). Also make sure you turn off the 20MHz BW limit.

I would definitely like to see more shielding inside that thing, it looks to be begging for some noisy interference if it was on my bench. Great video Paul (even with the sound effects).

I bought this scope new a few days ago. Looks good so far, but the top function button is shorter than the others and is about one or two millimetres shorter than the rest and feels way less tactile (you can't feel any feedback on pressing it). I think this is a fault in the production, because when I opened it up to check if it's stuck, it seemed all fine apart from the difference in height for that single button on that rubber sheet. But because of the way how it's made, I think mine is just one of many with this issue. Can anyone else confirm that?

It's very good for the price and that can always be put forth to justify missing features but while it does many things one wouldn't expect for the price, I know the lack of a single shot (and maybe, an external trigger input) would bug me after a while. Sometimes, you just want a quick look at a digital line, maybe to eliminate any analogue interactions (dwelling in the noise margin, slew-limited transitions, etc.) or need to actually read the initial bitstream on boot-up or whatever and having the scope already on the bench as one of the default instruments makes that a quick check function without resorting to logic analysers, etc. Thanks for your practical review.

I have to see the video in pauses paul because my eyes are terrible and require a new pair of lenses + filter for UV. So far so good, but thats a really nice compact scope, it will leave the bench with extra space or carrrying around for external service. At 7:00 there is a M symbol when you select Probe ou MeasureCurr, Does it means it has extra options by pressing one button called Menu or M? ( Edit it appear when it has a numerical value or the extra manual that has to be manually changed by knob , thats a feature for indication). Screen looks crisp

Do you get usable fast/hardware serial decode etc on any of these cheap scopes? Probe attenuation would be completely useless for me on this scope as it doesn't have 50x and 500x as needed by my differential probes.

    • @phillipbartlett1819

But your missing the point of your probes cost more than the scope. Most people don't need that ability. But I looked hard at owon and bought Rigol when I got my new scope. Sometimes a little more money is well spent.

@@phillipbartlett1819 True. I originally used a Rigol but I found the Serial decode to be annoyingly slow so upgraded to a Keysight. These cheap scopes do leave me wondering if they're useful even for beginners however as they lack many features beginners need. You purchased that from eBay, the electronic wrecking yard and you didn’t get a scope that was mullested as far as you can tell, wow that’s pretty impresive, buyer beware on purchasing anything from eBay, especially electronics, holy crap, the force was with you, wow.👍

So no external Trigger Input option? What about a more complex signal, like a Video signal or a Serial data signal say 9600Bd? Can it trigger on some data lines out of an old computer. What a bout a AM or FM IF /RF signals. Can I trigger on a Video TV line. I think any scoop to day can handle a square wave, So what are the real limits. Even the simple Voltcraft 20MHz 2Ch analog scoop of 30yrs old has a trigger input . Also no X-Y option? SO if this has NO trigger input is a peace of expensive toy.

So, do I hear a retraction on that "Cheap Chinese" comment?
    I've got the SDS7102V. It's pretty nice.

You counted the boot time too slowly... Was more like 20-21 seconds... (Not that it matters much)

You really just need to tell everyone which scope to buy at each price point. Just tell me what to ask for for Christmas. Actually, come to think of it, I just did the KOTY (Kit of the Year) awards... You should totally do the SOTY scope of the year with superlatives at each category.

Hey don't feel bad. My ex told me that letting me go for a drunk was the worst thing she ever did. But now iam just 300 bucks shy of getting the oscilloscope I want. So you win some and you loose more.!

    Hi
I am a loyal viewer of your channel. Love the video's. Please don't use the sound effects. And maybe change the 70's p0rn jingle at the end? I always hum 'oh yeah baby feels so fine' at it...

Hello guys. I have to choose between Hantek DSO5102P or OWON SDS1102. I really like the small windows with measurements in OWON than this in Hantek. But Hantek have larger memory record - 40k vs 10k in OWON. Which one will be better?

Does Owon actually make that oscilloscope or is it made by one of China's so-called "White label manufacturers?" That identical scope, right down to the style of the knobs is sold under many different brand names, but it's obvious they come from the same factory.

Some day I'll Own a real scope. This would fit the bill. Not like a Tektronix under the hood, eaaaa? I leave those protective films on as long as I can.

That's what I'm talking about right there. Now everything piece of equipment feels like an empty shell that is designed so it makes repair/modification more difficult. While it may be okay for consumer products, it shouldn't be for a technician or engineer.
At least for my taste, the actual trend is and feels awful, making products look portable even when they're not.

I just don't understand why they can't ditch the crappy internal PSU and instead drive the unit from an external powerbrick.
That way the scope could be just an inch thick. Rear housing in stamped aluminum, and Bob's your uncle...
Nice price, but looks real cheap inside. Manufactured 2 years ago also.
Was hoping this would be a new model, but maybe not so much?
Interesting video anyway, thank you very much.
Soundeffects? No, stop doing them! You got that? Stop doing them! You got that? Stop doing them! You got... Oh never mind.

This tear down is hilarious, even in 2024. You're the only one with a tear down. I was wondering if I could add more RAM or memory or a EPROM chip or something. I guess not.
How did it pass FCC inspection? Thanks for the zoom in on the board.

About the being-maried-stuff: It's better to have an electric guitar or other loud electrical device. She screams for you, instead of at you. And the laws of mother nature are always the same, every day. Your love for electronics will never be in vain. :)

Nah, Dooooooiiiiiiiinnnnnngggg was a much better sound effect. I would assume that scope is non-repairable unless sent back to Owon.
Nice. Have a great weekend Paul.
