I can’t speak for all states but in Ohio you need to pass a written test for a permit, and then you have 6 months to practice and pass the test before you must test for the permit again and start the process over. Most people take a motorcycle safety course that teaches one to ride properly and usually includes a test at the end which rewards a voucher. You can then turn in that voucher at your local BMV for your full motorcycle endorsement.

We grew up riding, most of us have carbed bikes, and the dmv doesn't give you time to warm your bike up. They only do the course in early spring. Or you gotta pay the harley dealership 400 something bucks for a summer course. Most of us just bought a bike, got some traffic cones, asked a local church or grocery store and taught oitselves based off the manuals and videos. It was a rough first year but we're all fine and can ride circles around most riders. In my state the cops have been pretty chill about it. I've been honest and explained that the timing and they're limited schedule has prevented me but they can see right there I've registered the bike year after year and keep insurance and have no tickets for riding.

I rode 125, 250, 465 cross when I was a teenager. Also lots of farm country trails through the woods, jumping, wheelies down dirt roads, runs through slate quarries, etc.
Decades passed without riding. The best thing I did was take a beginner road class when I got a Harley. I could handle the bike fine but the close quarters turning, and simply understanding a different level of awareness was significantly helpful. Plus you learn from solid direction and observing others because it’s good to see well executed technique and bad - you see the consequences of doing something wrong in real time.
Now I want to get into track and I’m almost 60. Starting all over again with a Triumph Daytona.

Take your msf folks! It’s wild to me that folks are on a bike on the road and not know how the clutch works properly. But even if you stumble/have the homies show you what’s what, the msf will solidify skills and help ya to be more safety minded because if someone doesn’t know the mechanics and relationships between the clutch, throttle, engine and braking, then I can guarantee they don’t have the slightest inkling of what to do in an emergency. It’s great to have supportive friends/community. But it’s even better to learn some things before the “learning through experience happens” keep the rubber down and ride safe!
