From 2000 to 2010 we always seen davenport , capriati , henin , clijsters , hingis , sharapova , mauresmo , pierce , myskina , kuznetsova , dementieva , seles , Williams sisters , jankovic in the quarters of grandslam
This was such a great time in women's tennis. Legendary players in every quarters of grand slams. Now anybody in the top 50 can make it cause consistency is just not there.
It was a great time to attend the USopen. Hingis, Davenport, Williams sisters, Seles, Jcap, Clisters, Justine, anyone in quarterfinals could win the tournament.
God Almighty. At this point, the women should just not use seeds. Serena is the ONLY one who is consistently deep in majors. Naomi comes a fair, but not especially close, second.
The consistency is not there because the top 20 or so players are all good.

A player outside the top 50 can win a GS or Premier Mandatory tournament out of nowhere, be vaulted into the top 20, and then not even reach the QF of any event for a year, and still stay in the top 20 simply because their points from that one tournament haven't dropped off yet. That's not a good player. That player just had a good week.
This is what actual depth on tour looked like. The top 10 consistently getting to the latter stages of events, and playing each other multiple times, which built rivalries. Serena and Lindsey would meet in the USO 4 straight times from 1999-2002 in the QF or better. And if a player wanted to break into the top 10, they had to go through the players ahead of them. They didn't benefit from draws being blown open because a high seed lost.
Davenport was my Favourite player such a talent! Shame she didn't win more slams!
The sound of the ball popping off Lindsay's Raquet is crazy!! Such precision and accuracy on all of her shots. Miss these days.

I wasn't even born in 2000 when this tournament was held but I'm 18 now and Serena it still playing! It's such a pleasure to live with the geniuses like her at the same epoch. Thanks, Serena, for my happy childhood despite the fact I'm Sharapova's fan.

back then as you can tell if you listen: not even the commentators were ready for a person of color to establish a place at the table of tennis... She and her sister have dominated the game since then opening the doors for many , albeit some not appreciative of their sacrifice. She is now on the back end of her illustrious career and we will never see another like her in our lifetime. Long live the queen.

I loved watching both these players on TV when I was a kid.
For someone who wasn’t the best mover, it says a lot about Lindsay’s game that she won 3 majors. She could really bludgeon the ball.
Serena had an insane level of athleticism when she was this age.
And that look after she wins her serve game and walks back to the chair. She meant business. Killer instinct, laser serve, massive power, fearlessness.

@@georgemarquis9767 Yeah, just like Venus in the early 2,000’s. Serena didn’t put the time in to stay fit later in her career at all. She just tried to muscle and scream her way through matches and it was really ugly.
Imagine the player Davenport would have been if she was more mobile, that with her clean tennis strokes already- deadly
If Lindsay moved as well as say Capriati/Hingis - not even Williams level movement, she would have been #1 and could have easily won 15 slams. Her ball striking capability is insane.

@@tremaine861 She's my favorite female tennis player, and there are so many Grand Slams if she really believed in herself she really should have won ('99 Australian Open, '05 Australian Open, '06 Australian Open, '04 Wimbledon, '05 Wimbledon, '00 US Open, '04 US Open and '05 US Open)
Even after she lost weight which gained her about a half step and improved her game it always amazed me how good she was considering her lack of foot speed. Sometimes while watching her sprint for a ball I would think that she wasn't only the slowest woman in the professional game she must me one of the slowest to ever play professionally. Her court positioning must have been first class to optimize her chances of getting to balls.
@@bluengrey1 It certainly looked like that but she can't have been as slow as she looked. Or her shots must have been even better than they looked.
The end of the second set was high quality and exciting. But the last match I rewatched, Venus vs Graf 99 was at a much much overall higher quality level. Still worth to watch to get reminded what monster strokes Davenport posessed. When she was on and firing her movement didn't matter as much and her strokes made her number 1 and a multiple slam winner. Serena really proved the world what you could do with almost as good shots and much much much better movement in the years to come.

It’s ridiculous how Davenport only has 3 slams, when Kerber has 3, Osaka has 4 and Barty and Muguruza have 2.
THREE doesn't seem like many, for a player of her calibre. But of course when she turned pro, she was dealing with Graf, and then, immediately afterwards, the Williams sisters at their peak. Tough competition for anyone!
@@bramlintrent1145 Lindsay is the cleanest most technically sound ball striker of all time on the WTA. The reason she does not have more slams is because her movement and speed was inferior to the other top players. The second reason is she had the greatest of all time Serena in her prime.
@@christianWilliams-pc4jn She also had a super duper tough era overall. Peak Graf when she was starting out as well as Seles, Sanchez Vicario, Pierce, Novotna. Then the tougher ever period in womens tennis from 98-2007 with Serena, Venus, Henin, Clijsters, Hingis, Sharapova, Mauresmo, Pierce, a slew of top Russians, Capriati, just an insane field.
@@rogerleblond499 yes the Golden days of tennis. That's the era I grew up with Davenport, Serena and Venus, Henin, Clijsters, Sharapova, Dementieva, Pierce, Capriati.. It was always them in the semis and the finals. Nowadays anybody could be in the final it's not what it used to be it makes me sad I miss those days.
Why? Osaka has better serve can hit as hard and moves better. Kerber will expose davenports movement. Barty better all around player. Only suspect is muguruza.

I miss the days when the WTA consistently had the same players making the quarters and semis of each slam.
And people claim today's game has depth. Couldn't be further from the truth. Depth was what we saw during this period of the late-90s through early 2000s. The top players consistently made it to the business end of tournaments. And the same player didn't win every time, but you knew an established, accomplished player would win.
That isn't parity though.
In 1999 Serena took Lindsay out as defending champion and then Lindsay returned the favour the following year. Cute!

I don't recognize the voice of the female commentator in this recording, but she's driving me crazy.
I used to watch Lindsay, Michael Chang and Pete Sampras playing Junior tournaments in San Diego California. At the time, it didn't occur to me that any of them would become successful professionals. It took a while for Lindsay to hit her stride, but when she did she added several major titles to her resume. Also, in my humble opinion, she had the best gams in the business!

Yep. I think with Nike she wears what she wants and most of the time it is unflattering stuff. To this day I dont usually why people call her a fashion icon, she looks terrible more often than not
@Merita merita in order for someone to be an icon they have to know how to dress. Sharapova dresses better than Serena. Either Serena's kits are too tight or too baggy. It doesnt look good. There is a difference between that and having fan imitate a player.

It doesnt take a guru to understand basic fashion rules, which Serena breaks all the time. At the AO this year her bra wasnt even her size and her breats were all squashed up.

Deus Ex Machina As a Serena fan,i have to agree with you. Serena doesn’t dress her size and you wonder who was near her and told her it was okay to go out like that. But she’s seen as a fashion icon and enters the very close circle of designers (since she’s friend with Anna wintour and has an entry to every fashion show). Knowing that,she should know better about dressing correctly ☺️

Amazing that Davenport with her limited mobility could stand toe to toe with the GOAT women's tennis player. Her ball striking was so clean, flat and hard! Imagine if Davenport could move like Venus!

Disgusted she let that 04 US Open slide lol. And that 99 Oz illustrated her problem. She played down to her competitors depending on the day. That semifinal loss to Mauresmo NEVER should’ve happened
01 and 05 Aus Open were also winnable. Also 2000 Wimbledon had she not been injured. 2000 US Open. Could go on and on. Even many in 94-97 had she sorted her fitness earlier.

@@tremaine861 Yes. She lost to her at the 2001 US Open (a match Lindsay had changes in, 2002 US Open (a match Lindsay was up 5-2, 40-0 in the second set) and the 2005 Australian Open final where again Lindsay had her chances.
David Forrest 5-2 40-0??? I remember catching highlights of that match and I know they were saying Lindsay was playing well to start out. Had no idea she had such a massive lead in a second set against Serena and went on to lose to her. That explains why she was never able to defeat Serena again, those mental scars had to be deep.

2000 was a strange season for Serena . It was also a year with a lot of injuries .
The commentary was so rude about the Williams family at this time, with constant passive aggressive comments. Hearing it now is jarring.

Correction: Davenport had everything except footspeed. Her footwork is some of the best of all time. W/o it she wouldn't have been able to hit her strokes as cleanly as she does. You think she just stood there waiting for the ball so she could hit it?
@Jasmin Hamid Lindsay knew that she couldn't scramble around the court and it was a literal waste of her energy to try to do so. She calculated that her time would be more efficiently spent hitting rather than running.
@@KH-sn2sjI agree. Her little adjustment steps, as well as her constant split steps between shots are very underrated. Perhaps not best all time - Graf and Seles were also good in that respect.

She also had the most match wins on the WTA Tour, with 63. She finished the year ranked first for the third time in her career. She defeated Venus and Serena Williams for the first time since 2000 (clearly not in good form)

Serena has been the victim of some of the worse officiating ever seen in the sport. All of which occurred after 2000. She has not handled it well at times, but everyone has their limit.
