Danner USMC Hots lasted me 3 intense deployments. I sent them in to be rebuilt for 80 and have used them ever since. I stepped on countless nails on my deployments and the danner have a fiberglass shank the entire foot bed
The combat boots that I was issued in boot camp lasted me all 4 years as a mortarman, in fact, I still have them. They are heavy and pretty hot because they don't have the holes like jungle boots do, but they keep your feet dry and warm in inclement weather. The other thing is I took the insole completely out because it was uncomfortable. Before I went to Okinawa they issued us Danner rat boots. I did not like them, although I seem to be one of the few with that opinion so I ended up hiking mount fuji in my trusty combat boots. In the rear, I wore Bates lites which were nice for day to day activities. Also for what its worth I've never gotten a blister but that could be for any number of reasons.
Turn your issue socks inside out. Have the smooth side against your skin and the fur out. Thank me later. Oakley sucks at everything but sunglasses. Soloman quest boots are great and the old ruck and frame beats the shit issued today. If you have t rucked a 12 miler with the old green jungle boots you haven’t rucked.
I know military can't wear 6" boots. But I've been wearing the 6"Bates zip side composite toe. The only issue is the soles only last a year and not warm in the winter. I have a pair of Chipewass steel toe. They have last over 5 years, water proof and very warm. But Very Heavy!!
In the northeast US, 200 or 400gr thinsulate is just about year round wearable, only the month or two heat waves of summer do you want to switch em out. Bellevilles are 100% bulletproof, 5 years of the hardest wear and tear you could imagine and they look 4 months old, or a month even if you compare how some boots end up looking after a week! Bad boots will hurt your feet and good boots are an essential piece of gear, basically the most important tool you will carry, dont skimp and dont compromise!
Best boots in my opinion for ankle support, comfort and all around use, rucking, running, patrolling, walking around etc are the Garmont T8 NFS which are lighter or Garmony T8 Bifida which are heavier and have a thicker sole and heal and probably better for getting good grip while rucking up steep hills and rough terrain. I used both of them and would switch them out periodically. Never had an issue with either. For some I'd recommend wool if you think you'll be walking through water but you can never go wrong with darn tuff, foxrivers socks. You can find just about anything I've mentioned here at any PX/military exchange store or online
Nick Bare seems like a much better listener... Hate it when people cut people off, steal the talk, and can't just sit and listen. Guy on left looked like he wanted to say only what he wanted the whole time.
My dad has his old boots (given to him in 2003-2004) He WAS in the Army when he got drafted in 1969 but when he went to the Middle East, they gave him these things (he was in the Corps of Engineers when he got them) I can finally wear them comfortably.
There are some decent “combat boots” out there that were mentioned BUT, nothing compares to Salomon Quest 4D Ultra. Hands down best boots for all around use.
A great follow up to the video on rucks. I had always rucked with the horrific hot weather boots back when they were black and we spit shined them. I was happy with the ICBs for normal wear, but the long distance rucks really put them back in pack and not a favorite. So eventually I invested in a pair of Danner boots and they worked pretty well. I mean, heck..I'm a long legger with size 13W feet. Lots of hot spots and stress areas, if you don't have your feet, you don't have the fight. Period! I tried a pair of Oakleys when I got out and realized immediately that someone making up the rules and regs for the infantry obviously doesn't ruck because they were awesome!! I probably would've been a nicer guy in combat, because they really really make that much of a difference! Comfort on pressure points and reducing hot spots and friction totally changes endurance and even mental subconsciousness (through nerve elation, positive circulation and physical comfort). I'm now curious about the Rockys and will try them out next after hearing the discussion here. Good info!
RAT boots, or bates lights, Omni wool socks. With my main pack, assault pack attached to the top of it, and my 240 on me, I’ll usually use RATs because I find them more stable.
IMHO BOOTS: Having spent 6 years in the Corps (1956-61) and 14 in the Army (Ranger in Nam) I still (in 2018) wear boots out of preference. The best I have found are the GSG9 tac boots by Adidas. Used by our Delta (?) and other Spec Opt units. They are wonderful out of the box, no break-in problems although I did have to try a couple of liners to adjust the fit and change out the laces from the cheap cotton to thin para-chord. I also have an opinion about socks but not here and now. Great vid's guy's.
The Garmont T8 is one of the most diverse boots for most situations it's light weight got back support and pretty quick varying but you might want to invest into some DR. SCHOLLS insoles.
Salomon's Forces line has an Army reg compliant boot called "Guardian". I just wish the "Jungle Ultra" has a compliant coloration so you could wear them all day long. I guess if you're high speed enough, you can wear a little something different.
Did the Bataan death march in 2016, heavy team. Met with the remaining survivors of the march and they were super cool. Blew out my acl 18 miles in. I will be back for 2018! Good luck its an awesome experience.
I wish the marine corps had more boot options, but I have the $79 McRae jungle boots, and I have to say they've surpassed the Belleville and the bates lite boots. They broke in perfect and have taken anything from the open ocean, to jwtc in Okinawa. They're 4 years old, have holes in them, but I'm still wearing them.
What I don’t understand and has always made me super skeptical is I can wear cotton socks with running shoes, hike a literal mountain with 40lbs and not have a single issue. I go 3 miles in ANY kind of sock and Army/USMC complaint boot with the same weight and I have blisters and hot spots everywhere. I’m a firm believer it’s all in the design of the footwear. Not the sock or how much ankle support there is. Gone through dozens of different uniform boots and have yet to find one that is worthy of keeping around.
Poly liner/ Wool socks are available weight specific ie light mid heavy speaks to the wool content. Size a 1/2 up for liners and to allow for foot swell.
There's a company called GO RUCK a company that makes rucking gear (go figure) that have a very lightweight Special Ops style boots called MACV-1 that are based off the Vietnam era jungle boots very comfortable and very lightweight
Good evening, I'm a civilian wanting to prepare for joing the army. I've been hitting the gym and keeping a good cardio regiment to stay "prepared" in that aspect but I'm wanting to start road marching to prepare my joints (skinny guy). All I have are work boots. Im probably overthinking it but would you recommend purchasing a pair of boots like the ones you recommended or just using what I have. Thank you for your time.
Buy a shitty pair from Walmart and use those. The boots you get issued are hot garbage. And the rucks aren’t too bad. I’m also on the skinny side and didn’t have trouble with them. It’s all mental imo. Good luck
Nick!!!! Amazing video and extremely helpful. I just shredded about a quarter sized piece of skin off the back of my heal today hiking through the mountains of so cal. Couldn’t understand why... then I remembered you had this video and I watched it. I wasn’t wearing wool socks so my feet were sweating like crazy in the 100 degree heat!!! I just pulled up to REI right now (it’s really close to me) and I’m limping in to buy a couple pairs of wool socks. Thanks again for the video, knowledge and sharing your experiences! Cheers!
Ain't nothing good ole Moleskin want fix! Ohrah ha ha ha Yes my ex-wife sent my gear after years of holding it and all boots, shoes and brass DONE! ha ha ha
I have started wearing my fireboots for everything I got my Nicks fireboots and I love them there heavy lesther boots but but i work wildlands FF and its part of the job to be able to hike in heavy boots
"Chill the fuck out!" Yes sir!! You tell em Nick! Ppl are so damn butthurt when you don't wear what they do. Personally I think Oakleys are shit but if someone loves them I could care less. I've worn out 3 pairs of Oakleys. I'll never buy them again. If they work well for someone that's awesome. Wear what you like. What's good for 1 person is not always good for someone else. It's personal preference.
My unit was supposed to send a few of us to the baton death March a few years ago then the government shut down and we were broke af. Dodged that bullet lol
Went all the way through RS with two pair of the Altama ripple sole jungle boot (was the coolest thing then). Builds character and knowledge of how to deal with fucking hamburger feet. RLTW!
Any suggestions for a civilian mom who’s doing the N F M (18.6 miles) with her active duty son in October? I just started rucking with a 20# weighted vest; I’m looking for a great backpack, boots need to weight at least 3.3#, and I’ll need the right pants / socks. I have 12 weeks to prepare and was thinking of doing a full marathon training to help get the miles in. Any suggestions for me?
Hi Nick! Thanks for this video. Want ask you about size boots. Do you have sneakers NB 574? If so, what size and does it match the size of Rocky boots? Thankful in advance for the answer.
Question. I am about to train for a 19 mile Ruck with 30Lbs. I have the Rocky S2V. Should I be looking at getting the Rocky lightweight you did the Bataan March in ? Or should I be ok with the S2V ? Is the weight and/or stability worth the investment in Rocky lightweight. Im new to rucking and need to make a good time on March. Thanks
i appreciate you comments on socks and wondering how much cushion you like for a couple of days backpacking with 30-50 lbs pack, 10 to 12 miles per day?
Do you guys wear an inner thin sock under the thick socks to reduce friction? Any thoughts on the Army study that said that was the best way to go? Thanks!
Man I have the hardest times with boots lasting especially in the last 3 years, they all just seem to delaminate. I could go into all the details and all the brands but they all have failed sooner then they should. And I'm not deploying very often anymore. Hell I'm almost 60 now half blind and crippled but still hobbling along.
Great Video Nick! Hey so I'm currently in the process of going into the Navy and im trying to better my PFT and was wondering since you have your workout plan if you maybe had any tips for bettering my "Pull Ups"? Also Push Ups I wanna better EVERYTHING really I just don't wanna be that guy in Basic that ruins it for the rest of my class and bc of me everyone has to PT twice or triple the amount of time bc I messed up you know. Thanks in advance and keep the great content coming!!
Has anyone tried Duluth Merino wool socks? I find these socks to be oh so comfy on the the feet, hold up better than anything I can find around my home.
What do y'all think about Nike SFBs? I'm a guardsman and a Nike employee so I get a hefty discount and I was thinking about getting some. I hear they're pretty decent. I've been in 6 years and have only ever worn issued boots so it would be nice to have some better ones.
jason bourne in the training environment I’m in I end up putting about 6 miles a day in them. Took me forever to break them in but they’re a decent, light weight boot
I've had a pair for about two years now. They are decent, just make sure you get the correct sizing. If you are already getting a pretty good discount I would pick them up.
Is it rucking if you're wearing Converse Chuck Taylors in a brightly colored backpacking backpack but still carrying weight and hiking up a mountain long distances?
Hey I️ am headed to mos school and I️ have been wondering in the marine corps are we allowed to wear any boot when we are on deployment or do we have to wear one of the 10 or so boots the marine corps approves
What about the regular issue Speed Lace Combat Boot? I never used anything and never had any problems beyond some expected hot-spots/blistering--I can't count how many guys tried to buy their way out the demands of humping ... and it never worked; they were only out $200 bucks for their efforts. What's the wool content/blend in the standard issue GI issue boot sock?
Nick, I'd love to see some drills for shooting. I mean like stress drills and stuff like that. so hard to find anything online that explains this well and is very informative. thanks for the VIDS brother and keep them coming
I used standard issue boots my whole career and still use them when I ruck as a civilian. Not because I think they’re the best or anything, but they worked and was scared to blow $200 on something that might not.
Danner USMC Hots lasted me 3 intense deployments. I sent them in to be rebuilt for 80 and have used them ever since. I stepped on countless nails on my deployments and the danner have a fiberglass shank the entire foot bed
Have a pair of the old Acadias. Absolute tanks. Heavy as Hell though.
Can confirm
I agree, I had my hots get the ankles tailored by Danner to fit my fucked up ankles.
How do you get more though?
I honestly think people who don't use danners don't use danners because they've never tried them.
T 8 NFS 670 REGULAR Garmonts - w - Fox River fatigue fighter socks. Go a full size up from your regular size.......you'll be glad you did
I rucked when ID cards were still green and digi-cam wasn't even an idea...yes I'm old lol
I rucked when we ate MCIs
Okay boomer

Lol, 12 miles 😂
i been wearing the same pair of oakley light assault 2 boots for 2.5 years and not a single issue.
I've rucked 1200 miles in old green jungle boots..... So I've rucked.

Was issued the Rocky boots and was instantly my favorite. They also make a light model that was good to run in.
Must be nice, I got the shitty Belleville boots

yeah i noticed that definitely annoyed the shit out of me

Fuck yes man. Wearing them now in Afghan. Your the man hoot1141.
How? Are they even in regulation?
What about water proof? Is it water proof
The Rocky made standard issue boots are the most comfortable I've ever worn once they're broken in.
A great follow up to the video on rucks. I had always rucked with the horrific hot weather boots back when they were black and we spit shined them. bacara18 the danners are good. Not Bates or welco.
Bate lights are horrible in everything besides pt lol zero ankle support and grip
Dylan Rutan damn that's impressive thanks for sharing.

Wyatt Montgomery Belleville is higher quality in my opinion. Plus they have more toe room.
Favorite boot of all time is The Asolo Fugitive GTX. Preferred sock in the winter, Smart Wool PH. D. over the calf.
garmonts for life. the boots that are gonna carry me through RASP in July.
Garmonts are the gucci
Best boot: Salomon Quest 4D Forces

Eduardo Cardoso rah
Danners Mojave, marine corps hot weather boots, every day wear...love em!!!
Poly liner/ Wool socks are available weight specific ie light mid heavy speaks to the wool content. Size a 1/2 up for liners and to allow for foot swell.
NAM Jungle boots or Panama sole both my favorites. Spit shined.
My old Rocky S2Vs are shoe glue and the treads only exist on the sides. I still hike with them. Rocky website had a few sizes for $80! Great boots.
Merrell Moab 2's are my guys. All day, every day. With and without a ruck.
Great advice. The right tool for the job.
I liked the R.A.T. boots but i enjoyed the cabadian royers as well but settled on altimas
There's a company called GO RUCK a company that makes rucking gear (go figure) that have a very lightweight Special Ops style boots called MACV-1

Yep!

West Coast favorites Danner, Israeli Boots and Issue Jungle boots with stockings (Pre-Under Armor Marines)under wooly green socks!
Albert McDonald I wore the Israeli boots! They were very un-boot like! I pulled them out of my storage a few years ago and the soles had crumbled.
Ain't nothing good ole Moleskin want fix! Ohrah ha ha ha Yes my ex-wife sent my gear after years of holding it and all boots, shoes and brass DONE! ha ha ha
rocky C4T by far the best footwear ever created
I more like the c7t much better overall. Just a little less support.
Holy hell thanks been looking for something like this happy you finally made a video on this
Good advice on the wool socks I've known about wool socks for years but what about people who are allergic to wool r.stark
+1 on the Darn Tough.
I have started wearing my fireboots for everything I got my Nicks fireboots and I love them there heavy lesther boots but but i work wildlands FF and its part of the job to be able to hike in heavy boots
I've busted so much gear, but it all depends on the task at hand. If it works, it works.
"Chill the fuck out!"
Yes sir!!
Tactical Tuesday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love it one of my favorite series.
Sooo much solid info. Thank you
Rocky's are from just up the road from me wore them for years.
Man, we only had black LPC'S, but in Germany we could buy the Matterhorn cold weather with gortex.
Love my georgia boots with merino wool socks....and dr. scholl's.
My unit was supposed to send a few of us to the baton death March a few years ago then the government shut down and we were broke af. Dodged that bullet lol
Wool - Only fiber to keep you warm when wet. I didn't realize this video is for an absolute AMATEUR!
Went all the way through RS with two pair of the Altama ripple sole jungle boot (was the coolest thing then). Builds character and knowledge of how to deal with fucking hamburger feet. RLTW!
Darn tough wool 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
Just wear crocs. I’m not even kidding.
No shit? I have some crocs. Now you've got me wondering...
I've only 1 thing to say, BAMBOO SOCKS ARE THE BUSINESS!!!
Berry Compliant. That's what we have to have. All US sourced.
Love it guys!!
what were you issued in the British Army?
Holy shit, a semi-famous RUclipsr comments on a video and there's only one reply besides mine? lol Love your stuff mate.
Really surprised Salomon 4d GTX wasn't brought up.
Yeeeee buddy, daddy garand told me about them
As(sho)lo Fugitive GTX hiking boots are where it’s at, the patrician pair worn by everyone in Afghanistan post-2010
they good too, so are merrils, its almost a matter of which brand u like better at that point
They aren't compliant with the uniform policy in either of these branches.
Would you still recommend wearing a dress sock underneath a wool sock as to reduce overall friction?
when you were a raider how much freedom did you have to choose your own gear? I was stuck with jungle boots gortex or deserts.
As a flat footed individual the rocky S2V boots are great
Good stuff can you do a video over general foot care whilst ruck in stuff you do and what works best in that reguards
Danner makes some nice ones in my opinion
Great info guys, question though. Doing the double layer sock set up. What is your opinion on that?
Danner R.A.T boot is super comfortable and durable but heavy and very expensive
But you guys didn't mention how high the boots should be. Should we be rucking in mid length or full length boots?
Fucking awesome! I'm a senior and plan on going into Army Special Forces. Your videos are great, Keep them up!
What insoles would y’all recommend
Nick love
Do you guys wear an inner thin sock under the thick socks to reduce friction? Any thoughts on the Army study that said that was the best way to go? Thanks!
This is excellent
Man I have the hardest times with boots lasting especially in the last 3 years, they all just seem to delaminate. I could go into all the details and all the brands but they all have failed sooner then they should. And I'm not deploying very often anymore. Hell I'm almost 60 now half blind and crippled but still hobbling along.
Great Video Nick! Hey so I'm currently in the process of going into the Navy and im trying to better my PFT and was wondering since you have your workout plan if you maybe had any tips for bettering my "Pull Ups"? The regular Navy does not do pull-ups for PRT/PFA. They do pushups. Only the Navy SEALS and Navy Hospital Corpsmen with the Marines do pull-ups.
How would you rate the Rocky c7t lightweight boots? I am looking at buying a pair right now. I can understand if you haven't wore them before. Thanks.
dumb question but do heavier boots make your legs stronger?
Has anyone tried Duluth Merino wool socks? I find these socks to be oh so comfy on the the feet, hold up better than anything I can find around my home.
What do y'all think about Nike SFBs? I'm a guardsman and a Nike employee so I get a hefty discount and I was thinking about getting some. I hear they're pretty decent. I've been in 6 years and have only ever worn issued boots so it would be nice to have some better ones.
jason bourne commenting just so I can get the response
jason bourne in the training environment I’m in I end up putting about 6 miles a day in them. Took me forever to break them in but they’re a decent, light weight boot
About one month break in and then they're good to go. Super light weight with a decent soul especially if you get the sfb field variant.
I've had a pair for about two years now. They are decent, just make sure you get the correct sizing. If you are already getting a pretty good discount I would pick them up.
Garmont NFS best rucking boots ever
omniwool tactical socks are good as well
Is it rucking if you're wearing Converse Chuck Taylors in a brightly colored backpacking backpack but still carrying weight and hiking up a mountain long distances?
Yes
Hey I️ am headed to mos school and I️ have been wondering in the marine corps are we allowed to wear any boot when we are on deployment or do we have to wear one of the 10 or so boots the marine corps approves
Have you guys tried GORUCK MACV 1 or GORUCK Jedburghs?
Any recommendations for a regular grunt? Since we don't have that many options I'm just curious.
Ariat performance work boots are awesome for everyday wear and their classic leather shit kickers LoL
But for real they're amazing!
I'm a truck driver not military but I have arthritis feet and rockys work.

I used standard issue boots my whole career and still use them when I ruck as a civilian. Not because I think they’re the best or anything, but they worked and was scared to blow $200 on something that might not.
Can you feel the difference with a boot that has a sidezip
Ayyy I wear Rocky's for work. :D
Which rockys!?
Hey man what would be a good boot and sock combo for Kuwait, Iraqi, Afghanistan terrain?
