  • Welcome to Bits & Biology, a channel about board games from the perspective of a biologist gamer. In this video I play a solo game of PARKS followed by a review of the game (multiplayer & solo). Timestamps can be found below in case you want to skip around.
Fair warning - I'm a bit chattier than usual in this video! I have worked in two national parks and visited many of them, which makes for a lot of stories... I also talk a bit about the idea behind national parks and how they got started in the United States.
Let me know you liked the video by giving it a thumbs up!
Have you played PARKS? What do you think of the game? What other games would you like to see on the channel? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

I love hearing about all your travels and all the different National Parks you’ve been to. I had a similar experience at the Grand Canyon. I was about 22 and went there for the 1st time. I vividly remember standing near the edge and how spectacular it was. We decided to hike all the way down 1 day and all the way back up the next day. There was still ice on the upper parts of the trail and we did not have proper gear. I had a really bad cold or flu and remember being absolutely miserable the whole time. The crazy things you do when you are young 🤣😅
I live near Redwood National Park 🌲🌲🌲

I've never been to Redwood National Park, but would love to visit it someday! On the NPS site, I discovered they have RUclips videos where you can manipulate the video to look around the forest - it's amazing! I know nowhere near the majesty of seeing it in person, but pretty cool nonetheless - I hope people will check it out. I don't think I can link to the NPS page, but here's a link to one of the videos on RUclips: ruclips.net/video/T4PIPjptQxs/видео.htmlsi=QD7E7cFrYOfsIRdm
For anybody who wants to find more of these videos, just search RUclips for "Redwoods in 360"
Also, I didn't realize Redwood National Park included beaches - I used to enjoy camping on the Washington coast in Olympic National Park. 🙂

New fan of your channel here. Thank you so much for the playthrough of this one, which I have played several times multiplayer, but never solo. I am going to have to give it a try!
Thanks for the information about the National Parks week too!

My family’s favorite park is the Adirondacks. Not a National Park, but a state park. My dad grew up for a time in the area and my family loves to go up there every year….❤

Wow! I had no idea there was such a large wilderness area in New York state! 6 million acres is almost 3 times the size of Yellowstone! I was near that area many years ago when I attended a conference at Cornell University. We went for a hike on the last day of the conference - it was beautiful (but don't ask me where we went, I don't remember, sorry). Thank you for your comment - I just spent the past 45 minutes looking at beautiful pictures and reading about the history - it's fascinating (but sad about the lakes and the trout). Your dad is lucky to have grown up there. 🙂

@@bitsandbiology I suspect you were viewing the Ithaca Gorges. Yes, a very beautiful area. We are a bit further north - Watertown/Star Lake/Cranberry Lake area (my father actually attended the NYS Ranger School in the area - Wanakena). And yes, that is beautiful too. We have been trying to do our little part to preserve and enhance the natural beauty (i.e., keeping most of our “neck of the woods” wild, planting trees, etc.). One of the reasons I enjoy your channel - combining board games with science/nature! Thanks to you!

I have visited all the urban national parks in and near New York City. I did a day trip to Yellowstone in the late 90s and enjoyed the geysers and Sulphur Springs so much that I made a point of visiting the Sulphur Springs in Pozzuoli, near Naples, when I visited Italy in 2000. Back again, you could walk inside the little caves where the temperature was over 140°F and there were little signs saying keep away but walkways like in Yellowstone, and then a family died when a child got too far into the sulfurous area, and now you cannot visit it any more as far as I know, so I am glad to have gone when I did.

The Sulphur Springs in Pozzuoli is amazing! It looks like somebody picked up parts of Yellowstone and deposited them into a neighborhood! The houses are so close! 😮 It was interesting to read about some of the history of the area. I can imagine how this feature reinforced Roman mythology by presenting a place that one could easily imagine was inhabited by the god of fire! And I think it's fascinating how geothermal places such as this are universally (as far as I can tell) regarded as places to go to combat health complaints. Thanks for sharing!

I just checked out some of the New York City Parks - I didn't realize the city had so many large parks (other than Central Park) where you can feel like you are in the wilderness!

@@bitsandbiology yes the city parks are amazing, and the state parks as well. If you are looking for more of a wilderness experience, I would recommend Greenwood cemetery in Brooklyn, which actively cultivates honeybees and which allows large portions to go unmowed for a season to encourage wildlife. I spent a lot of time there as an ambassador when all the city parks were shut down and people were using this active cemetery as a recreation site so we volunteers made sure that the activities of the neighbors were good with the activities of the mourners. I have seen all kinds of birds there as well as woodchucks and the usual squirrels and chipmunks in urban parks all the time.

Yes, definitely enjoyed your little tidbits about the parks while you played (and appreciate you making edits/additions throughout.). Inspired me to play! (Got lucky with 34 points, as the ranger moved slowly at the beginning). Thanks!

Another National Park my family has visited many times is Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Lassen Volcanic National Park looks amazing! Some parts of it look like they could be in Yellowstone. 😀 I would love to go to the Lassen Dark Sky Festival some year - it looks like a lot of fun! We might have to take a trip to northern California one of these years - it turns out to be just a two day drive from northern Colorado! ☺

Very enjoyable playthrough. Talking while playing is pleasent. I think you did not score your final objetive card, so 2 more points.
