  • The Australian Department of Defence has confirmed that the lead ship of the ANZAC-class frigates of the Royal Australian Navy, the HMAS Anzac (FFH-150), will not be sailing anymore, and despite unofficial, it is technically and effectively like saying the ship is retired from service as of yesterday.
The HMAS Anzac (FFH-150) is 30 years younger than the Philippine Navy's BRP Gregorio del Pilar, has a far better sensor suite and weapon system than even the PN's most modern ship the BRP Jose Rizal as it is equipped with the CEAFAR phased array radar and a towed array sonar, as well as the Mk.41 VLS for Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles, and is far better and larger than any existing or upcoming warship of the Philippine Navy despite its age of 28 years.
The ANZAC-class are younger and more capable than the Pohang-class corvettes that the PN is pursuing from South Korea, and uses diesel engines through CODOG propulsion layout which the Philippine Navy can be happy with.

Good option for Philippine Navy to acquire this capable warship but hopefully all the systems and armaments are not taken out.

    Questions to ask:
    1. If Australian Navy no longer wants to operate it, why would the Philippine Navy want it?
    2. Normally, the navy will retire their ship because it is too expensive to operate. If it is too expensive for the Australian Navy, does the Philippine Navy have enough money to take over and operate it? What's the cost-to-benefit ratio?
    3. Normally the navy will retire their ship because of its lower survivability in current combat scenarios, and buying new ships with better weapons systems will make more sense. How long will these ANZAC-class frigates last in present-day naval battle scenarios?
    4. Australia is a huge land mass, a single island sub-continent while the Philippines is an archipelago with thousands of small islands. Australia has a totally different naval defense doctrine than the Philippines. How would Australian warships fit into the defense doctrine of the Philippine Navy?

Wouldn't be surprised if the australians decide sell this ship at a "relatively low price" and not donate it for free, no one really knows for sure, for now. Though it has aged a bit, it's still modern by any standard, and it could still be very useful for a navy like ours, coz we're in dire need of additional naval assets to augment our "very small surface fleet."
Just to speculate in case they sell it for let's say $ 50 million dollars. Say for example, they remove just the missiles, (anti-air, anti-ship, missiles & others) leaving everything intact, and assuming all equipment on board are still working, would $ 50 million dollars be that expensive? I guess not, i think that would be a "real steal" for that given price. Building a new ship of this size and specs now would easily cost $ 400 million dollars upwards. My view only, don't take it seriously, just speculating here, hope we get this ship.

Even free or the pn will pay but for lower cost it's better to have it than nothing this HMS Anzac will give the pn an additional fire power in the open seas but by the way a big thank to Australia if they will give it to pn.

Nothing is free. There’s training and ongoing logistical support if not also some transfers of technologies to be accounted for.
    Missiles alone are not free.
Regardless, these ships need to join the PN asap. And accept the Pohangs which also needs to be upgraded to carry 4 asm cannisters and install the SPIKE NLOS & FCS.
    GO PN !!
