  • Lünen is located in the centre of North Rhine-Westphalia. The city is part of the Unna district of the county of Arnsberg. Lünen lies in the north-east of the industrial Ruhr region. The River Lippe flows through the town, with the Datteln-Hamm canal to the south of the settlement.
Settlement on the site of Lünen has existed since the beginning of our era. The documented mention of the town (then still called Luinen) dates back to the end of the 9th century. At that time it was a village. At the beginning of 13th century Lünen was walled, and in 1279 was granted city rights. At that time, the village was under the rule of the archbishops of Munster.
From a small agricultural town, Lünen went through active trade and membership in the Hanseatic League and developed into a major industrial area. In 1336, Adolf II, count of Mark (Graf Adolf II von der Mark), for strategic reasons, moved the city from the north bank to the south, and in 1341 granted it city rights. The river Lippe crossing played a major role in Lünen's development, as did the west-easterly routes to Wesel, Kamen, Hamm, Soest and Lippstadt and the north-south route to Cologne from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea via Bremen, Osnabrueck, Munster and Dortmund. The city's customs lists from 1573-74 contain information about the oxen route through Lünen (Dänischen Ochsenweg), along which oxen traders transported beer, wine, grain and cheese, defining the trade of the time. This route is now commemorated by a monument in the centre of Lünen, featuring sculptures of oxen walking through the town square.
In 1609, the city was annexed to the Margraviate of Brandenburg (which later became the Kingdom of Prussia). In the 18th and 19th centuries, Lünen was a small town, but it gained importance as a staging post on the international mail route. The railway and the Datteln-Hamm canal did not pass through the town until the 1920s.

In this town I grew up. I wasn't there for 7years, course all family members are gone. I plane sometimes to go there and visit the places I remember. But not after this video. So sad to here 99%different languages, see only several German people and so many hjabis. So sad. 😢
