Heartbreaking and infuriating. I was in the military until a couple years ago. My decision to leave was a very painful but necessary one, and it was based on the trajectory I saw our military taking (exactly as you described it). Being in law enforcement now I see the same things happening in that field, too. Sometimes it just feels like I was born in the wrong time period, and like I’m not built for our current world. Thanks for the video, it helps others out there who feel the same ways.
I train a couple of LE departments and ya, the guys tell me a lot of the same bullshit is being forced through there as well. Sucks, hoping we turn it around as society soon.

The army (including SOF leadership) always preaches about taking care of your equipment, but they don't practice what they preach by taking care of their most important assett- the people. The crappy thing about SF is after they are used (VN, 1st gulf war, GWOT) they are not treated well or even maintained in a state of readiness- but when Kuwait gets attacked, or a 9-11 happens, or whatever is next- our leadership (mil and civilian) expect us to start right back up like it is all a movie we didn't finish on netflix and they just expect to hit "continue watching". I saw it when I first came in, and saw it again through the 90's under clinton. 9-11 happens, and it becomes suddenly apparent that equipment is outdated and/or broken, people haven't had the ammo and other assets to go to the range, go through SFAUC every year, attend advanced training (or even sustain common skills) so we just jump through our butts and "do it live". You get what you pay for. I left team life in 2008 and retired in 2010. From what I've seen, it seems like my timing was perfect. But people like me had to contend with all this nonsense on the front end.

You hit the nail on the head - I have a USMC cousin who just retired & was at the withdraw, it's galling (but not shocking unfortunately) just how unilateral the decision to up the timetable was. Going forward, it will be interesting to see if the military is capable of adjusting to increase recruitment/retention - like how there was an emphasis on professionalism post-Vietnam. Part of the issue is that children grew up their entire lives seeing a very nebulous concept of war, and our liberal western values simultaneously decry & espouse American Exceptionalism, whereas our enemies have brutally singular messaging, which civilians literally cannot bring themselves to believe is possibly true. Additionally, I believe that No Child Left Behind has had an insidious effect on the thought processes/expectations of authority from the current age group. That, and smartphones fundamentally altering the rate/method at which human thought is expressed (beyond what we are evolutionarily capable of processing). I'm fucking glad I was born in the 80s. But, I have hope that even today, we're only one bad event away from reawakening the sleeping giant.
Awesome perspective. Got a question for you though. How would you compare officer life in sf vs enlisted? Of course enlisted get more time on the ground and range and officers are leading more with more administrative things to do, but what does that relationship look like? Is it really THAT different?
Biggest difference is as an officer you only get 2 years or so team time then it’s all admin. So I guess it’s different in that way but most is the same
I appreciate the honesty. As a new guy going into SF I hope I can help make things better. I cant imagine our country continues down this awful path for that much longer, hoping for more people to step up in our government this decade.

Facts: If you can put up with all the DEI shit, being in Group is the way to go. Corporations are lookin at 18F's, LVL3's, Warrants, anybody with a TS/poly and alot of Echo jobs available right now in the IT/AI satellite space. U can go to the FBI Academy through Group as well as certain people can put a packet in for FTC at the Farm. I got into Georgetown University Masters Program on a Pat Tillman Scholarship because of the Fox course and LVL3. But these young kids comin in the team room as E5's without a combat patch is killin the Regiment. All the experience and leadership in 3rd Group that I came up with are gone. Good luck to these new guys. We paved a long road for you.
I'm at nearly 18yrs, in 1323.....you're %1001 right about everything. I don't feel bad about myself as I do for the new dudes joining. Everyone accross the hall is either getting out or trying to find ways to not get burnt out.....new dudes don't have key leaders to get wisdom from anymore. Anyways, I just subscribed to your page. Good seeing a bother getting after it on here.
I wasn't a cool guy, just regular CAV. The Op tempo, rotations, and "check-the-box" training, was insane and taxing. I had a PSG that had served in multiple combat tours between Iraq and Afghanistan and he was getting thrashed by the daily grind of constant training and classes. The pay isn't enough for the hours and BS. Worst part for retention is you don't see the benefits until you leave. He told me when I was in a few years ago that he had spent more time at work doing BS than he did training up Soldiers for an ongoing war. It's just not worth it, and the Army isn't serious about winning wars. Neither is the government as a whole since we lost in both of our major theaters of operation.
37 year old dude here. I'm in great shape. I say that with confidence, since all I do is train. No kids etc. I've been contemplating joining the guard as an 11b, but I spoke to some dudes who are in my unit here in Michigan, and they say pretty much what you said. They don't train infantry stuff enough. Just BS shit, even though its just a weekend here and there. It boggles my mind why leadership isn't trying to sharpen the blade of their units every chance they get. Makes me not want to go at all. I wonder if I would just feel like a phoney with a blue cord.

I would be interested to hear the difference in perspectives between a new guy in SF versus a guy who’s been in a long time. I would imagine that a guy who joins a group, 18x, does cool training, lives the Green Beret life would feel a lot better about not seeing combat than a guy who’s been getting it for 10 years and suddenly quits cold turkey.
Not true at all, new guys are the most motivated to go see combat. It’s the main thing you’re there for. Not going to combat as a Green Beret is extremely disheartening for guys.

Actually yes. My dad was a GB in Vietnam, during the war and then as we went into peacetime, he has nothing but negative things to say about it then as well. It comes and goes in cycles, hopefully we see it take a positive direction here soon.

Yes, it is an odd dilemma, crappy administration aside, peacetime is the worst thing that can happen to a motivated military. Man, a lot of “training” exercises. I talk to all my buddies who are still in and they all have nothing but negative things to say, so not great at the moment. Hopefully that changes.
Take firearms courses, skydiving classes, survival/camping courses, evasive driving courses, scuba classes if you like the water. All the cool stuff without being owned by the government.

@TKMVillar exactly. I joined the Navy in the mid 2000s despite the fact that I didn't even agree with the Iraq War at that time. I signed up because it was the right thing for me to do, and I never regretted it.
I’m 22, 18X shipping in June. I know there’s a lot of ugly parts of the military, and yeah, my generation hasn’t yielded great warfighters for the most part, but becoming SF is what I want to do. I still feel like I can do the job and that I can be useful in life. If I can help save even one life or positively impact just one person, it will have been worth it.
Honestly I guess I'm the 1% that doesn't want to actually go to war. But I really don't want China fucking with Taiwan (and any other similar situation for that matter, like Russia and Ukraine), setting the precedent that it's alright to deprive countries of inalienable rights, and would rather prefer to be the deterrence, big stick diplomacy. Kind of like the DOL mentality, peace is preferred, but not over liberty; you know give me (and my fellow Earthicans) liberty or give me death... I suspect I'm too idealistic though and I'll have to learn the hard way...

There’s still a lot of positives about it, I’ve got videos about that. But it’s not headed in a great direction, hopefully we see an administration change here next year and we change course back the right way.
No need to feel depressed about it. He's attempting to join the 75th which is still way better than being in the regular Army. I was a regular Army guy on JBLM and trust me 2nd Batt Rangers lived a different life.

As an 05B4S in the 10th SF Grp in the late 60s this is particuarly disturbing. This was pre-SOCOM. The term 'regiment' is new to me.
Same time period as my dad, he was in 46th company. But ya, times have definitely changed.

If we're not conducting combat missions anymore, what specific activities are the guys now getting burnt out from?
We constantly deploy regardless of combat. Working with partnered nations and stuff of that nature. Optempo isnt any lower, just no combat operations.

Use your maturity to your advantage and take care of your body, the q course is a young man’s game, but plenty of older guys make it through.

@TKMVillar exactly. I joined the Navy in the mid 2000s despite the fact that I didn't even agree with the Iraq War at that time. I signed up because it was the right thing for me to do, and I never regretted it.
I’m 22, 18X shipping in June. I know there’s a lot of ugly parts of the military, and yeah, my generation hasn’t yielded great warfighters for the most part, but becoming SF is what I want to do. I still feel like I can do the job and that I can be useful in life. If I can help save even one life or positively impact just one person, it will have been worth it.
It’s not all bad. I’ve got videos detailing all the good parts about it as well.
But isn’t it good, the part of being at peace time? What’s the point of keeping a war forever?
It’s not for regular people to understand, warfighters aren’t regular people.

Honestly I guess I'm the 1% that doesn't want to actually go to war. But I really don't want China fucking with Taiwan (and any other similar situation for that matter, like Russia and Ukraine), setting the precedent that it's alright to deprive countries of inalienable rights, and would rather prefer to be the deterrence, big stick diplomacy. Kind of like the DOL mentality, peace is preferred, but not over liberty; you know give me (and my fellow Earthicans) liberty or give me death...
I suspect I'm too idealistic though and I'll have to learn the hard way...

What the fuck are you talking about there are dozens of books/movies written by seals in every one of those conflicts you claimed “not seals” in.
@@ValhallaVFT I am well aware of the books/films by Seals as I was involved in all of them, I was trying to highlight that they are NOT the only ones! for example what was the film/book the 4th of July about who was it based on? Helicopter pilots, Airforce Pilots, USMC, Rangers, CIA. Infantry, Don’t you have access to internet? Now I’m really gonna mess with your head, being in USA an all, give Tanto or Oz a call ask them who the two Scottish guys were at Benghazi.
@@ValhallaVFT I was trying to highlight that there have been soldiers from other units who have wrote books some made into film easy to find if you have internet. You seem to have an unhealthy fixation about Seals as do many others posting comments based on 2nd 3rd 4th hand opinions with little or no experience of actually taking part on a Seal operation. As someone once said, opinions are like a-holes everybody got one. Did you ever hear of a guy who challenged Chris Kyle to a knife fight? or maybe about the crazy brit guy at JSOC who SHOT one of his own men for being disrespectful?? Guilty on both counts lol. There’s still a lot of positives about it, I’ve got videos about that. But it’s not headed in a great direction, hopefully we see an administration change here next year and we change course back the right way.
No need to feel depressed about it. He's attempting to join the 75th which is still way better than being in the regular Army. I was a regular Army guy on JBLM and trust me 2nd Batt Rangers lived a different life.

Best bet is to go guard SF, get a conditional release to go NG or AD, or go CAG from the reserve.
