Sledge's dad knew how much danger he was in, You could see it in the look he gave approving of Sidney saying what he did

My father in law was with the 1st Marines from Guadalcanal to Okinawa. One day I asked him which battle was the worst and without hesitation he said Peleliu.

The Pacific War was indeed a nasty war, the series doesn’t shy away from showing that. The series captures the conditions that the marines (and the army) had to endure.

I grew up on Peleliu, and I am U.S. military living/stationed in the UK now. Thanks for a great reaction, cheers mate!

Just in case you don’t know. If I called someone a Geordie you you know where they came from. In the US a Hoosier is someone who comes from the Midwest state of Indiana.
Hoosiers is a movie you should watch. The setting is a basketball championship but the story is really about redemption. After you are done with this give it a shot.

So to explain the scene at 22:39
From what sledge wrote (seeing as you’ve finished the series now) the situation is a bit more than what’s shown.
During the evening said marine did start freaking out and causing a major scene like shown.
The medics tried to sedate him with morphine 3 times which is already pushing it for keeping someone alive and healthy but the guy continued on unabated.
Even after a few heavy punches to his jaw in hopes of knocking him out didn’t help either.
As such one of the marines helping was told to grab something to help knock the guy out. Take into consideration tho what we’re watching is a show that already is making the scene and darkness lighter so we can see the character, so take into consideration how dark it was there.
So the marine grabbed the first thing to hand which was his entrenching tool which he intended to smack the guy with the flat face end of.
However, during the struggle, panic and darkness, he came down at the wrong angle with the side and cracked the guys skull killing him.
The guy never meant it at all and even sledge wrote that both guys had actually been really good friends so it screwed with the guy that hit him quite hard.
None of the marines around him judged the guy and they promised never to say who done it outside the unit and that it just happened.
    - a reason why is they believed to new recruits and civilians such a decision can come off as quite poorly and would look down at the guy for just doing what was needed of him.

My dad had an uncle in the Pacific during WWII. He was on many of these islands. He also had two uncles in Europe during the war. The youngest of them never made it home. He was shot down by a sniper. He was only 19 years old

Several sources assert that Leckie suffered a blast concussion: an explosion sends shock waves into the brain, injuring it.

This series was very emotionally draining. More so than Band of Brothers but I guess it really shows the the differences in the types of fighting between the ETO and the Pacific. Both were brutal but the brutality in the Pacific was next level and it was conveyed very effectively.

My favorite episode. They certainly put a lot of their budget into the airfield attack. As you say they ramp up the brutality. Like the medic Roe episode in BoB (also ep.6) it prepares you for the hard hitting next one (a breaking point episode).

Save it. Why do you feel the urge to "shepherd" people trying to do "tabula rasa" reaction videos? Maybe talk to your therapist about your control issues.

Eugene wasn't wrong with that "better him than us" comment. If that guy freaking out would have been allowed to continue he would have let the Japanese know precisely where they were, painting a giant target on their back. It's not a good thing that that Marine ended up dead, but if the guys around him hadn't acted it could have gotten them all killed.

You're only the 2nd of all the reaction videos people I've done that with BTW...are you from the Yorkshire area? Visited there in 2013 and adored that area! ❤

If you can fit it into your schedule, I think you'd enjoy Empire Of The Sun (if I haven't recommended it already 😀).
Steven Spielberg... John Malkovich... and a very early role for a now big actor ;-)

Great video, mate. Once you're done with this series, you might go have a look at what actually went down there back then. Insanity beyond this show's depiction, but it definitely got close. Major barking point in the Marine Corps when I did my tour. Looking forward to the next!
