too bad little too late the land its already contained, i bet if they take samples from the sand that place is so contaminated that there's no way those birds can survive unless they do more than just prohibiting the riding of road vehicles they have to start cleaning.
Here’s the thing. There is almost NEVER unanimous consent in the scientific community. Jen cites reports that say the bird is thriving and that the air pollution ain’t that bad. Well the Coastal Commission is not made up of a bunch of motorcycle and off road rec haters. They weigh the data they are provided and make a decision. The overwhelming data says the bird is threatened (and has come back from being endangered) and that there are significant air quality issues.

Arizona has had many deserts closed down to OHV. Claims were dust, and damage to the desert. Later those same deserts were bulldozed and turned into shopping plazas and neighborhoods. Thanks for making this video! You Rock, I've never been to Pismo, but I hope it stays open. I always feel hopeless on these matters.
Sadly, every off-road trail I travel in Arizona is ridiculously trashed with cheap beer cans, tons of target practice-related garbage, and hazardous waste such as batteries, fluorescent light tubes, and used oil. If an off-road vehicle breaks down, it seems like the protocol is to just leave the chemical-soaked sands and busted vehicle parts too. I pay for several permits annually just to be able to explore my own backyard, but it’s becoming more and more restricted - likely due to all of the trash and abuse from irresponsible off-roading folks. I hate to say it, but if folks were a little less trashy when they went off-roading, then I don’t think the community would have such a problem with locations being shut down. It’s exhausting cleaning up other people’s desert trash, but I always bring and fill up a couple of trash bags just to make myself feel better. Sad to see the condition of our public lands deteriorating so rapidly… these last few years have been noticeably worse and with a few new companies renting OHV vehicles along the I-17, things have especially become trashed all along that highway. 😢

The dunes were shut down completely during the pandemic and - surprise! The amount of dust didn’t change at all. It’s a DUNE because the onshore winds blow across the sand to make those hill-like features.
correction onshore winds blow sand from waters edge, towards inland forming dunes. Offshore winds blow from inland towards the ocean blowing sand into the water. The amount of dust the vehicles make is nothing compared to the amount of dust a heavy onshore wind produces.

I was born and raised here. My dad built dune buggies and I have been going to the dunes since I was about 3. I no longer live there, but my family does. As much as I do not like all the traffic and tourists coming to the area, I know that the area needs it to survive. The dunes change with the wind and when it rains. I do agree that those who come to ride or camp should take care of the area, which it seems they do. Compared to the rest of the coast line of Cali, this isn't a lot. What Cali allows in some areas is far more destructive than what is going on at Oceano dunes.
I'm from Grover City not beach. I live in Santa Barbara 100 miles south, I love that beach for over 50 years I've been watching people enjoying the dunes . A major source of fun is riding on them. For people that didn't have a dune buggy there was Bill Lovernes Spider in Oceano. It was a huge Buggy that took whole Families, clubs, whatever Bill would drive them into our Outback. hah. It was one helluva experience we loved growing up there.
@@wildbillbegleyjr.3523 I remember Bill Loverne. He was a WWII destroyer crewman who wore an earring. I liked how his tires left his logo in the sand. We still have a vacation place at Grover at North 12th St and the frontage road. I skated every Friday and Saturday night at Old Man Forsee's Pismo roller rink in the 70's because it was cheap. I can still picture Bob and Newell surfing at 3AM by the pier. Grover City had the best tasting water until they got uppity and changed to Grover Beach. It costs me over $100 each water bill even though it's shut off and not a drop gets used until we come back every 6 months or so. Now the water tastes like rotten reeds. I drove our Jeep and our dune buggies at Pismo in the mid 1960's before I could even get a driver's license. I will never sell that place as long as I am alive. Dick Smother's of the Smothers Brothers sold my dad his 1966 Travco motorhome in 1968 and it's still behind our place in Grover. I rode the Salt-N-Pepper shaker in the amusement park in the Pismo Pier parking lot in the 1960's. Some drunk dude puked booze stench all over me on that ride. The memories came flooding back.
'the dunes need people to survive'? I have news for all of you : When humans finish making Earth inhospitable for people, EARTH STILL won't "need" us at all.
Well we could if people gad been responsible in the past. Now we're screwed cause the past generations tore the planet apart for money. Now we can't enjoy nature and everything makes us sick. Sucks
Conservation vs preservation. I absolutely agree, needs to be a balance but that balance needs to include actually allowing people to use our wild spaces
The Coastal Commission is a Governor appointed group of environmentalists who are not from the area. As a local who grew up going to the Oceano dunes, it’s been very disappointing seeing the fight to close them.
Its nice to see such a dynamic when it comes to coverage on Rev. Its not just hooning on motorcycles, but also on the culture of riding and what surrounds it. Good work.
Great reporting! Very informative and nicely laid out both sides of the argument. I live 20 minutes form these dunes and it seems that for the most part, the people complaining about the dust are people who moved into this area, not the locals. Shoulda done their research before buying their homes here. Hope the dunes stay open for off-road riders and campers.
Its just a dishonest reason and probably the best the anti dunes could come up with. Some people have said the dust was worse in 2020 when everything as shut down because the dunes riders actually pack the sand making it stay in place better.
I live here too and it's not just the Mesa residents, but the people in Oceano who just don't want the vehicles on "their" beach. I think if an environmental impact report was conducted on their houses, it'd show they are on prime plover nesting ground.
Yup they fence off miles of "our" beach at Morro Bay for much of the year. "Snowy plover". And they have little nazi state workers that "we" pay hiding within to tell you what you can and cannot do
Yep, leave it to the clowns in LA t shut down the beach to make up for their other pollution. They did the same thing up here but for caribou. We had over 20,000 sqmi shut down to any motor vehicle. All for maybe 50 caribous
They did the same stunt up here in Oregon, they closed huge parts of the dunes down cause of the plovers. But, if you walk through those sections there's still no snowy plovers... it's literally all a play on emotion to sway people who don't even ride into making the decision for everyone. Also, the dunes are ALWAYS changing on their own. AND European beach grass is an invasive plant; BTW.

In Livermore California they used green sticker money to "expand" Carnegie off road area. Then claimed it needed to be A "protected area" and closed it down. (It was a old coal/brick mine area, worthless open area).
They didn’t close Carnegie, but stopped them from expanding. Honestly it’s not THAT cool imo, because there isn’t much wildlife and nature…. Which is why it is so silly they blocked the expansion! It's a matter of time; before you see some houses getting built. They closed down many ATV areas in southern California to protect desert animals, and years later, the land that was once protected was replaced with buildings.

The "both agencies declined to provide a comment for this story" says a lot about the people making the decisions. It's the "do as we say and shut up about it" style of governing.
The friends of Oceano dunes won the lawsuit and the courts deemed that the California coastal commission never had the right to close down the dunes so everything is wide open again. As I understand it.
I lived in California for 20 years. Now you can't do anything on a beach. No footballs no frisbees no volleyballs no fires no drinking no smoking no loud noise... Why go???? They're all now open for homeless encampments. And trash....
Excellent job Jen! The Coastal Commission ought to be dissolved. There’s way too much on their plate to actually properly research and make pragmatic decisions. Ask any homeowner, developer, or contractor trying to get things approved within their jurisdiction, it takes a minimum of a year. Too much power centralized in a small group. It’s like a nightmare HOA board in charge of all of CA coastal areas, ridiculous. I hope the lawsuits prevail!

California went from the land of recreational innovation to the land where fun is banned. As a native who left for freer conditions, especially outdoors, in 2009, I still find this sad. The California of On Any Sunday, the genesis of dirt biking's enduring popularity, is dead.
Enough is enough !!!! Support The Friend's of Oceano Dunes. Keep the one last right of camping/riding on the beach. What a beautiful way to spend time with family and friends. And the local businesses trive with the extra patrons. Stop going STUPID people. PLEASE
The bureaucracy and duality of California never ceases to amaze me. It’s just easy to see how environmentalism is so extreme in California, because the state also allows so much extreme environmentally negligent behavior. Like cities in desert regions steeling water from other states and countries so their lawns are green, to just going full throttle off road. It’s the state of mixed messages, bureaucracies, and contradictions.
Sand dunes Facts! Fenced in area in glamis Calif killed all turtles in the preserve area. They realized motorcycles build ruts and berms that help plants get water to roots and create shadows during the day. RVs and campers always dump clean water before leaving dunes for weight saving and that water usually went onto plants. Where the fence was, all life died and it was because of people that enriched the environment and kept it alive. We use to give turtles water through fence but guess it was no help. That area now is called vendor alley where roach coaches line up because of flat ground with no bushes or plant life period. Riding my whole life I’ll tell you all one thing hitting a bush in az is like running into a porcupine. Nothing here doesn’t harm you and stab you with poison. I’ve had whole hand swell from aloe Vera plant in knuckle. So yeah don’t hit or run over plants because even In a sand rail or truck they’ll break through glass and stop a sand rail in its tracks.
Thanks for the info! I live in San Diego and think Off Roading and OHV parks need to remain. We lost several areas on the border due to re-development and housing tracts. Please keep us updated and I will try to help anyway I can and get the word out!
Very well done! Its sad that people want to close down the small area that allows families to pass on camping and riding on the beach in CA. Doesn't surprise me at all. We raised our kids riding there with several trips a year but now that they are older we choose to go elsewhere.

As a native Californian for many, many, decades I am surprised it has remained open this long. Used to ride our dirt bikes next to PCH, racing around the oil rigs. And ride and 4 wheel at Lake Elsinore and the desert. And ride in pie plate races in the desert. A pile of tires would be set a blaze several miles out and its a full on balls out race to the smoke. lol (yeah, not burning tires is good idea) California used to be literally amazing and the best place on the planet. Currently live in the foothills of the Sierras and some good dirt roads still abound for riding. For now...
I wonder if the US Supreme Ct ruling in EPA vs W Virginia will aid against the commission’s ruling? They ruled an unelected committee can’t make a ruling that affects an industry.
I live here in oceano and work out in the dunes doing rentals. I heard that they're wanting to buy a beachfront property to build hotels. That's the main reason.. the rich people line their pockets with more money
Well, what you heard is B.S. Those rumors have circulated for YEARS! I'VE LIVED HERE FOR 26 YEARS AND RODE THOSE DUNES FOR OVER 10 YEARS. l only stopped riding out there because of safety issues with inexperienced riders. There's no way they could sell any of that property for development. That environment is not conducive for any construction as the topography is always changing due to the prevailing winds. Anyone who tells you otherwise is uninformed.
They should make it so only electric off road vehicles are allowed. Fewer people would go and It would quicken the transition to electric without completely eliminating the activity.
Authoritarian Karens will stop at nothing to make everyone else as unhappy as they are. Can’t let them have 1 just 1 4.5 mile section of beach to ride on. Such BS
If this is the case then the coastal commission should outlaw and remove all man made structures within 600 yards of the ocean water line. Including all buisness, housing and return it back to natural habitat all along the coast of California. .
This is a perfect example of private enterprise creating an area of leisure activity and communal gathering while also improving the environment for an endangered species versus the government pretty much ruining every single thing it touches.
This is one of the OHV areas that is supposed to be saved for off-road vehicle use forever according to the promises made when the old green sticker program was started decades ago. In exchange for being taxed for something that used to be free the deal was that money would buy and maintain parks to guarantee there would always be places to ride. Very little new land was ever bought with lots spent on enforcement, fences, signs and RV parking, even a helicopter to chase us. Now the ultimate insult is to close one of the few places we do have. Every place we were kicked out of is now houses shopping centers or mitigation land so they can build elsewhere. They say we hurt nature but it always was filled with life before the bulldozers came. I used to feel bad for riding in illegal areas and quit for years. No more! The treaty is broken.
Big fan of off road access for motorcycles, dune buggies, ATVs, off road vehicles, etc. Not a big fan of the multitudes that come to such areas and leave all sorts of trash, junk, graffiti etc. To those of you who "leave no trace behind," and "pack it in, pack it out," bravo. Keep doing what you're doing. To those who don't, you're the reason these places get closed. Sure it's for the endangered X or Y but when there is cigarette butts, soda cans, plastic utensils, plastic bags, condoms, cups plates, beer cars, etc etc etc, it's just easier to close those areas off than teach you basic human decency. So, congratulations, you played yourselves.
I have lived on the central coast for 31 years now, much of that on the Nipomo Mesa and as always when a beautiful undeveloped area becomes discovered development happens and that’s exactly the case here. Builders from outside of the area saw $$$$ signs , this caused two things to happen, the removal of 1000s of wind breaking eucalyptus trees then the building of well over a thousand million $ homes directly down wind of the Oceano dunes, mostly purchased by people from Orange County and the Bay Area ( they were sold a false Utopia ) after actually living here reality set in ( there’s wind and not a lot of the creature comforts they were used to). A perfect storm for what’s happening now with the dunes. I miss the central coast of 30 years ago but I understand, My wife and I are transplants ourselves but we didn’t want to change our new environment that’s why we left our old one. I don’t miss Calabasas at all.
Thanks to COVID lockdown, there is objective data that clearly shows that air quality was the same or worse while the dunes have been closed to riders. It drives me crazy that they can ignore this information! We've never had a trial-run of the dunes being closed and now we have it! Closing the dunes will not improve the air quality!
Grew up on the central coast and the dunes are a vital part of what makes the central coast the amazing place it is. The commission has already shut down hundreds/thousands of acres of riding here and they still aren’t satisfied. We don’t have many places to ride in general and losing this area would be devastating for the community that thrives on this spot.
Welcome to Germany oh wait... Sorry about that. Over here I really have to leave my country to be allowed to have some off pavement fun. Really sucks. And our neighbours are also starting to put up more and more restrictions.
@@ProdicalMan cause the majority of our population simply hates motorcycles and fun in general. So there is no way for us few riders to have any kind of political influence

All the business owners in the area should get together and sue the city for future loss of revenue. The dunes bring in about $280M a year for local businesses and that should be enough to win the lawsuit. I've been riding those dunes for almost thirty years and it will be such a loss for the Central Coast.
It wouldn't cross your mind if you understood the situation. The area will remain a state park in perpetuity, just not one in which you can destroy the landscape with motor vehicles. There are a number of other state parks in CA where off road vehicle use will continue. I would anticipate that in the future ICE vehicles may be banned from such areas.
I used to go riding in Avery California before they built housing next to it and then closed the area. I remember some smart ass told me to "take care of our forest". ( I always came back from a ride with cigarette butts and crushed water bottles in my pocket from the hikers). As my wife said " the environmental movement is killing the environment".
In Morro Bay huge snowy plover population and the City wants to build the World's Largest Battery Energy Storage System of Lithium Batteries on the ocean. Where are the environmentalists on that one and California Coastal Commission🤔
Having seen how fellow riders treat off road areas here in MI, it’s probably coming here as well. Have to enjoy them as much as possible before that happens.
I'm old enough to remember when Florida did this. Now we've only got Daytona Beach. All they did was close it off, claim it was conservation. Well, they built condos etc soon there after.
This is a wonderfully researched video and super valid assessments, but as a local born and raised in Oceano, the large tourist crowds camping on the dunes are really what’s killing it. It gets rowdy, alcohol-fueled, and a lot of people who visit don’t care about the dunes or town outside of their use of it. Limiting beach camping but not ohv use would help, bc many like myself are tired of using our days off to help clean up the beaches after busy RV weekends but still wanna take that drive down the beach too…
Yep this is the piece of the puzzle people don't seem to get. It's not the off road part that people don't like. It's how those people act that people don't like.
This was an incredible video and story! Would love to see more content like this from the Revzilla team. Excellent job of telling both sides and the truth of the matter. Bravo Jen and Revzilla!

In the past I needed to work with The Costal Commission. I quickly realized that they only listen to themselves and do what they want. No matter what the facts say.
It's surprising that off-roading there has lasted this long. In most California state parks, you aren't allowed to walk a small dog because it could cause stress to the wildlife or pollution if its waste isn't picked up.
That's pretty rich coming from the state that can't keep shit, piss, needles and drugged up homeless off the streets but they magically seem to go to such lengths in the parks.
Let’s see here. We built houses all out by the dunes in Moro Bay just north of Pismo. We built homes and destroyed the coastline n Shell Beach just north of Pismo and no one complained or money talks and BS walks. All of these places were supposed to have moratoriums because of the lack of water for the last 60 years. Yet, they built! I bet some developer or developers are just waiting to ruin the dunes as well!
This battle is happening all over the US... conservation vs. preservation. Conservation says that by investing in an area we can make it available for public use/benefit without damaging it's value as a natural area/resource, Preservation says that the only way to protect an area is by kicking humans off of it (it seems founded in this odd idea that humans are not a part of the natural world). And for those who aren't offroad vehicle fans, these same things are happening to bikers, hikers and other outdoor sport fans who take advantage of public spaces. If you enjoy an outdoor activity... there's a good chance that somewhere someone is working to limit your ability to enjoy that activity in an area they have decided needs to be "preserved". In case you couldn't tell... I'm a fan of conservation. I support efforts to CONTROL access to overused spaces to keep them healthy, by limiting access if needed. (which is what I'd recommend for this beach if the claimed issues are real)... but knee-jerk preservationist behavior is not in the best interest of the public but often ALSO isn't in the best interest of the area they seek to protect.
Well, humans actually aren't part of the natural world. We rose above that long time ago, in case you missed the last 10,000 years or so. When have you seen a seal use a boat and a net to catch fish? Or lion use a hunting rifle to catch an impala? Wake up son, and stop using stupid arguments. Hell, it's not even an argument, it's just stupid.

I’ve lived here my whole life and ridden there many times. It’s such a great place, and should not be closed. We will all be relegated to dedicated “smaller” and more controlled areas eventually. There is, and must be a way to co-exist with nature. That balance comes in our own stewardship of our accessible public lands. Like it or not, we are all ambassadors of this thing we love so much.
Plenty of public land in CA. I've been riding most of my life and never had issues finding an awesome riding spot within an hour. Lake beds, dunes, forest trails. All public land (our land).
In Portugal you are allowed to ride in the forest with motocross and quads but only the coast guard can ride on the dunes, it is considered protected areas and you get fined if you are caught
Well researched and presented! I have very fond memories of the Pismo dunes- when our kids were small we would drive around with the family SUV with the tailgate open. The kids still remember that. It is one of those things that seems almost too good to be legal. Like motorcycles :-)
If they can close the dunes for the reason of maintaining natural habitat, they can essentially do the same for all offroad locations. So if a community elsewhere decides that offroading does not fit in with their community, they can then use this case as precedent for their own.
There are a numerous of off road recreational areas in CA that are both state owned and privately owned and which will remain available for persons wishing to destroy the landscape with their motor vehicles.
@@avsystem3142 how do you know they’ll remain open if this one won’t? Aren’t our cars also destroying the natural landscape by requiring roads to be built? How about walking on the beach, couldn’t that disturb the surface? How far can they take this…
@@avsystem3142 did you watch this video? What do you think of the evidence presented by the California Department of Conservation that there is more vegetation now than there was in the 1930's? Are you going to start paying instead if OHV activity is banned?

Open your eyes. This is way bigger than the dunes. Do your homework and use your brain. The entire coast will be closed down before 2050. Good luck

IMO anywhere in the US that can't survive without tourism just shouldn't be settled. Let nature use the land more productively.
No ATV's, no hunting, no fishing, no camping and on and on, what's the point of saving nature if you can't spend any time out in it?
Well we could if people gad been responsible in the past. Now we're screwed cause the past generations tore the planet apart for money. Now we can't enjoy nature and everything makes us sick. Sucks
Conservation vs preservation. I absolutely agree, needs to be a balance but that balance needs to include actually allowing people to use our wild spaces
Additionally, those fighting to ban it probably don’t even venture out that far anyway.

The Coastal Commission is a Governor appointed group of environmentalists who are not from the area. As a local who grew up going to the Oceano dunes, it’s been very disappointing seeing the fight to close them.
And yet you keep voting tyranny in.

They did the same stunt up here in Oregon, they closed huge parts of the dunes down cause of the plovers. But, if you walk through those sections there's still no snowy plovers... it's literally all a play on emotion to sway people who don't even ride into making the decision for everyone. To those who don't, you're the reason these places get closed.

AMAZING video- serious VICE vibes! Excellent story telling, journalism, and very compellingly put together with the writing and editing. Awesome work!
I'm old enough to remember when Florida did this. Now we've only got Daytona Beach. All they did was close it off, claim it was conservation. Well, they built condos etc soon there after.
Some California's people have flat out lost their marbles
As a rider in MT I always want to be a steward or the land and not see the ohv community be stereotyped as a destructive group. It starts with us riders to protect these areas for future use. Bravo Jen and Revzilla!
I really like your final thoughts. Be respectful of the places we love to travel.
As a former Californian, I'll let you know that the "environment" has been the excuse to turn many, many open lands into places of complete State control and sometimes they go back into private hands for development.
I live on socal by johnson valley. As an avid hunter and off road enthusiast i'll take all the public lands i can get. There is also too many shitbags leavin trash graffiti and destroying habitat unnecesarily. That being said, i believe you are right. Pismo will be shut down for the sole purpose of beach front property.
@@funshine3571 Law abiding citizens shouldn't suffer for the mistakes of lawbreakers. The policing should be on the beach, fining fools who litter, and using their local revenue to supply garbage service to the area.
I wish northern ca could break away. We have small towns and actually work in the woods and appreciate nature because we live in it. Ca government would ideally like to see people go home, plug their cars in and watch TV until work the next day. That's not living
"Despite all the evidence to the contrary, the California Coastal Commission seems unlikely to reconsider their position" Tyrants are unlikely to change their ways, listen to people, or look at the facts. For them power is more important than facts.
In the past I needed to work with The Costal Commission. I quickly realized that they only listen to themselves and do what they want. No matter what the facts say.
I'm sorry. You got their name wrong. It's the California Coastal Decommissioning Commission.
My parents already tell me there's not much to do as far as fun anymore. Now I'll have to tell my kids there's nothing to do for fun anymore.
@@garrydhintz8017 It's almost as if parks and cities are different places run by different people.
Born and raised in San Luis Obispo County. Love riding and love the dunes. However, the reasons stated in this video for attempting to shut down the dunes although technically true, is just smoke and mirrors compared to the real reasons. It goes much deeper than this.
I'm curious, what are the deeper issues? The arguments presented in the video are the only ones I've heard about.
So many people have died and have been seriously injured on atvs.
@@andrewpirman shut down public roads and ban cars then.
@@armadilllo why are you taking it to the other extreme. That does not help anyone. And I’m not saying, closing the dunes is the answer. All I’m saying is there are a lot of bad accidents.
@@andrewpirman why are you interjecting atv deaths? That isn't helping anyone, we know the risks. My grandfather died falling over in his kitchen.
If it’s fun it’s more than likely illegal in California as this state is all about wreaking havoc with people enjoying their lives. What I hate the most are these unelected tyrannical bureaucrats like the coastal commission that do more harm than good and have way to much control over our lives.
Sure you can continue to co-exist with nature, just not on a motor vehicle 😄It's insane how you are even allowed to ride on the dunes.
@@vgama oh thanks for the permission on how I get to connect with nature. Your comment is trash as per the usual comment section of any post
If the court decides to stop off roading they'll kill that town. So sad a few millionaire Karens are ruining it for everyone.
How far can they take this…
@@alexp6409 Your comment is classic reductio ad absurdum.
@@avsystem3142 did you watch this video? What do you think of the evidence presented by the California Department of Conservation that there is more vegetation now than there was in the 1930's? One would think this leads to the idea that it's more about good stewardship, not removing OHV activity. OHV entrance fees to these parks pays for land management activities. Are you going to start paying instead if OHV activity is banned?
Remember when feinstein shutdown access because of the desert tortoises yrs ago but when a new mall was to be built she had no issues protecting the tortoise! That was awesome! People want just no fun for anyone.
Where are all the orv manufacturers? They let us down all thru the years they need to step up and represent or purchase areas to be used.
When you see the satellite view, the beach is just a speck of the total of the coast, the Plovers have, ALL the rest of the coasts to live in.
But they like this spot. Probably because they like dirt bikes like the rest of us 😅
