I don't know that they are more popular, just more mainstream in the US. In other countries the original tapioca pearls usually be own sugar or honey flavored are still more common. The agar agar ones I've usually seen called popping boba.

UK had the same McDonalds characters and little party-sections, depending on how big the franchise location was, some even had the soft-play areas but that was rare. But the characters (Grimace, Hamburglar, Mayor McCheese, the Fry Kids, that bird etc) were phased out ages ago, like late 90s. Ronald himself hung around a little longer but he's gone too now, and the decor is a lot more sleek and corporate looking. Way, WAY better food quality than the US though, UK McDonalds is actually kinda good. Though the Happy Meal mascots now are some terrifying possessed Happy Meal box things.
I remember when Geoff was coming up with awesome ideas for AH and doing really well. now he is making a failed podcast that few people listen too....R.I.P Geoff!
