Most of the Lover album of devastation covered in glitter. It’s easy to be distracted by the pretty colors and upbeat melodies and miss the devastation. She put a mask on the album just like she put a mask on herself. Also, she has played this acoustic a few times.
what? i only see miss americana athp as something hidden. then we have dbatc (movie inspired) corneliastreet which is only nostalgic as memories often are afterglow which is saying sorry to someone you love. figuring out how to handle arguments without escalating the archer is about not being able to fully trust. devastation by it? i’m not sure as there is hope in the song. help me hold on to you sygb well cancer. she may have masced here a bit, tough not in the song. only keeping the issue more privet where do you see devastation?
So this song is base off the movie someone great, Taylor said watching it she felt like she was a part of the breakup and she couldn’t stop thinking about it! And the movie was written after the writer was going through a breakup and listening to the song Clean by Taylor got her through it and inspired the movie! It’s a bit of tswift inception! 🖤😭 one of my faves for sure!
The version from City Of Paris is great but for me the absolute best is her Tiny Desk concert version. Probably because you can actually hear her clearly without any crowd noise at all but it's still live. It's also close up and you feel like you are in the room with her.
best song on the lover album in my opinion, and probably my favorite taylor bridge of all time! the live from paris and tiny desk version hit different 😭❤️
There’s a running theme through Taylor’s music and I think she does it to throw us off a bit, and we absolutely LOVE it! That theme is using upbeat rhythms in her songs to take these deep, heartbreaking subjects and MASK the sadness using that mechanism. It makes me think about watching Miss Americana and her speaking about being such a people pleaser and how her thoughts and feelings were measured by what OTHER people thought or felt about her or how she should talk/act/be. It’s like everyone expects her to be this positive, smiling person all the time, so she’s gonna be that, but the sadness is still there and she’s basically screaming it, yet no one hears. They see/hear what they want to see/hear from her. The things that make them comfortable and happy. And then, another theme throughout her music is one that actually concerns me for her a bit, and that is her singing so much about turning to alcohol to deal with things that hurt her. It may not be a real life situation; it could be for entertainment purposes, but Taylor is very much a “real-life” writer who expresses herself in a first person, very personal way. This is just my opinion. I’m not diagnosing her. But it would seem to me that someone as genuine as Taylor who is so vulnerable in her writing and takes her work very passionately wouldn’t over and over and over again connect alcohol use with heartbreak and depression if there weren’t something to it. Possibly, just a binge thing? Or maybe an “eff it! Life sucks today today!” kinda thing? Idk…Again, not calling her an alcoholic. I’m just threading these too extremely obvious themes in her music together. Again, it’s one of those things it seems she’s screaming, but no one can or wants to hear.
What I love about this song is that she's talking about how she gets drunk and it's not enough and walks to the traffic lights for answers and they answer "I" "Don't" "Know". One word for each color of a traffic light and she says it with pauses after every word like they're talking back to her as they change colors.
she has performed it on guitar, if you look for the city of lover special here on RUclips, also, if you slow the melody down it sounds like a wedding song, i don't remember the name, but its the exact same chords, she's a genius 💙
First time I heard this song, the background noises were throwing me off. But the lyrics were so good I kept trying and then I just fell in love with it. It’s one of my all time favorite Taylor songs now. Cannot best that bridge!! ❤
please do nectar of the gods by lana del rey- it's one of my favorite songs of all time. a reaction of heroin, change, beautiful people beautiful problems (demo) would also be nice. i loooove you so much💗
This expression was also used in the great book : The 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I feel she took a lot of inspiration from it as well. I really recommend it !
I actually think I wouldn't survive this song if I had to listen to a more "serious" version of it. It's already heavy enough as it is. The pop vibe doesn't always keep me from tearing up when I listen to it because the lyrics are still very powerful and relatable to me. I also think the acoustic version might sound sadder but in this version there's some anger, too? Maybe it's just my imagination but especially during the bridge I always feel like she expresses anger stating all the parts he touched or they shared. We also already got a sad song on this album with "soon you'll get better", don't we? So I feel like Death by a thousadn cuts is somewhere inbetween? It's not full-on sad but also not quite happy. It's sad and low-key angry or passive-aggressive and to me it's more about fighting these feelings? As if she was desperately trying to lighten the mood although she was suffering but sometimes her real feelings seep through? Kinda dark humour vibes maybe?
i literally just posted a story with broken traffic lights and this song and you post this, i feel connected in some astronomical way ☺️♡ (love the video as always)
This is one of my favorite Taylor songs, and it literally has her best bridge of all time! But I absolutely hate the studio version. I always play the live version (they have the live from Paris version on Spotify). It’s acoustic with just the guitar and sounds so much more raw and less upbeat that way. I definitely recommend checking it out. But omg!!! Your book!!! I literally just got home after flying out to where my friend lives and stayed with him for a month, where I tried and failed helping him detox. And it literally broke my heart, but I had to walk away before it literally destroyed me, even though it feels like I left him there to die. And it’s really messing with me. So… your book, is like the most serendipitous thing ever, and needless to say, I instantly pre-ordered! But wow, what a coincidence… 😲🤯
When I hear “ I ask the traffic lights if it’ll be alright they say.. ‘I don’t know’” I picture her watching the lights changing from (I)green to (don’t)yellow to (know)red Like she’s just searching for anything to justify the pain 😢
This is an amazing song one of her more up-beat songs but we all know with Taylor up-beat normally means heart breaking lyrics not going to lie this song hits hard definitely giving masking emotions and when she says "chandelier's still flickering here 'cause i can't pretend it's okay when it's not I relate to that a lot never wanting anyone to see me upset and never telling anyone when something is actually wrong but even though this song hurt's to listen to it somehow makes me feel seen and this song has so much more hurt in it that just destroys me 😥. Also just want to say thank you so much for making this channel and helping me understand lyrics to all of these songs a bit more I love your channel so so much and I really hope that you're doing amazing 💜💜
I think that Death by a Thousand Cuts is a reference from The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo in which, I think that Evelyn was divorcing one of her husbands or was broken up with of her lovers and she felt like the pain which she felt at that time was like, "death by a thousand cuts". This book The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was released in 2017, two years before Lover and personally, that makes sense to me, there are also other references from that book as well and also the song, "The Lucky One".
I recommend you listen to the live from Paris of this song, it makes the whole song different because of a sadder music that fits better and make It depper
you shoul listen to New years day. The song is a piano ballad and it's defenetly less upbeat than her usual. "The closing track on reputation uses a New Year’s party as a metaphor to discuss holding on to people and memories from both good and bad times. Taylor recognizes that when the ‘parties’ in her life are over and the ‘new year’ begins, such memories are all she will have left to hold on to and learn from" -Genius. I wouldn't say the song is super gut wrecking, but it maeks me feel something that no other song on reputation can.
Do cornelia street or clean! Especially clean is super appropriate for the topic of addiction, bc shes talking about being clean from a love that was like a drg
Damn your making me realize at 6:25 that I miss my guy because I just wanna care for him 😫 I wanna hug him and I know deep down he just wants to care and protect me as well
Let me echo the folks telling you to listen Death by a 1000 Cuts (and Cornelia Street) from her Paris concert. It’s a different song. Not really sure why how she let the production distort it so much. I can’t even listen to the Lover version’s of them. They’re exquisite in pure form. (What’s odd is your thumbnail showed before you click on it is from the Paris show.) Here you go: ruclips.net/video/-TJi3ITWV90/видео.htmlsi=1xxjpK9P1YyDJbJ3
I don't there there are any Taylor songs that don't have layers of emotions wrapped in an upbeat music. The lyrics would just click depending on the mood
Don't know if this is the right way to do this but signed up for the highest level membership and really hoping you'll consider reacting Billie Eilish "What Was I Made For?" - and yes I did pre-order your book! I'm hoping it's something I can buy in bulk and give away to my family members since they are a friend of an addict me (but then it's like I"m giving them homework, which feels weird) so I thought about just making it an optional giveaway like buy 50 and give them away on FB, idk, anyway get in touch if you want to connect on this!
Just for more context on the Billie Eilish "What Was I Made For?" request - I think there are just so many reactions online that are so shallow when, and maybe you've had to see the movie, it's a very existential question with a thousand tentacles about how we find meaning.
Hi!! I’ll get on this right away! I loved that song and movie. As for the book, I think it’s totally okay to giveaway bc it isn’t like hard reading, there are drawings and questions, etc. send me an email to discuss mendwithmere@gmail.com

Seeing this after Taylor posts her stages playlist
Devastation covered in glitter 🤌🏼
Her accoustic Live in Paris version of this is gut wrenching. The vocals and the emotions when she's singing is absolutely perfect

She has played it as a surprise song, not sure whether it was a piano or a guitar…but yes, it’s is much more gut-wrenching, especially live
It was by guitar in L.A. on night 3

I can see how it just makes you wonder about the alcohol thing. I feel for her, I feel like it would be so hard if no one is listening.
@@mendwithmere Exactly!
One of my favorite songs of her. Every lyrics is a masterpiece and the bridge is a regilious experience!. Honestly, It's unbeliavebly good.

She does it by guitar in both her Live From Paris show, and during her NPR Tiny Desk performance.
I often think how much more heartbreaking Taylor’s albums would be if she did full acoustic versions of them!
I always thought this song was underrated it’s my favorite Taylor swift song
