I first saw Alien when I was 9 years old, i'm 27 now, and even now I am still completely in awe of the Xenomorph creature. The creature itself is disturbingly beautiful, the way it moves is so graceful for such a large creature.
Regardless of how much effort CGI involves at the end of the day it will never be better than practical effects, they are after all, physically real, and you cant get more real looking than that.
a tall guy wearing a full-body suit designed by H. R. Giger, mechanical devices for the head & mouth close-ups - and it became one of the scariest creatures to be ever seen in a movie. much scarier than the CGI aliens from later movies. thank you Ridley Scott, H. R. Giger & the entire crew for creating such an amazing creature and making such an awesome movie.
So one of the people playing the Alien is a black graphic designer doing Tai Chi and the other one a gymnast who talks politics while wearing the Alien costume and tennis shoes and getting his ass covered with K-Y jelly by a flamboyant dresser called 'Mother'. this will forever change the way i view the movie.
He's right, it is scarier if a monster is very close to looking human, but with definite parts that are horrifyingly wrong. This puts the fearsomeness into that which is otherwise very familiar.
This film was one of the most important moments of my teens...seeing this film made me really interested in films as an art form rather than just an entertainment form :)
good morning, just brought back a memory of me when I went to see this in 1979 in Framingham-Natick, Mass. with my cousin, and how she screamed when Parker knocked Ash's head off with the fire extinguisher (?). I cracked up. lol. great memories of an amazing once-in-a-lifetime movie. Have a great day :)
Because it looks like a shaved chimp. There was preproduction art showing a more Lovecraftian giant sea creature and when I saw that I got great expectations for the film. They all went down the drain in that scene. Thank you very much, Mr. Abrahams...
Saw Alien at the drive-in when I was a teen, scared the crap out of all of us. Best sci-fi monster of its time, no wonder Geiger bagged an Oscar the mad bastard.
@The-Wolf-with-no-name thank you I am so glad I am not the only one that considers both Alien (1979) directed by Ridley Scott and The Thing (1982) directed by John Carpenter are the greatest sci-fi horror movies ever created as well:).
I remeber seeing Alien for the first time and how the creature was like the ultamite boogeyman for me. Seeing how it was created and how it worked is so surreal in my mind ha
H.R. Giger is a very interesting character all by himself. Someone should do a documentary on him. His art transformed the sci-fi genre; look at how many movies have been made based on what he did for the original "Alien." Then there are the many copycat movies and so forth...
That guy who was the body for the Xeno has some long arms! Hes such a legend they said he was studying at uni at the time, geez he should have tried to make money off this, I bet he just thought nothing of it at the time, he probably didnt even know what it was all about.
Back in 1978 when this movie was being film and a year before theatre release. It would of been great to know if the director says,"lunch break everyone,be back on set in an hour",and the actor in the "alien" costume says,"I'm going to McDonald's for burgers& fries you guys want anything?"(now, imagine the customers expression at that restaurant & no trailers of the movie on tv yet).
Unbelieveable. didn't you read the 'making of' book? I'll find you a link. How much sweat do you lose under the hot studio lights when animating your CG beast? How many retakes do you have to make? do you have to deal with skin irritations from your materials? yopu don't have any experience with any of this.
It cannot be said enough how ingenious a move it was on Ridley Scott's part to show as little of the full Alien as possible. The scenes of Bolaji Badejo walking around in the suit really ruin the mystique of the creature.
I have all of these in my "Director's Cut" version of Alien. Really Ridley explained the "DC" label was for marketing and Fox just wanted to put in some deleted scenes for the Alien DC two disc DVD releases. Veronica Cartwright always was in good spirits during these interviews despite the shit they did to her. The chest burster scene is funny because none of the actors, aside from Hurt, knew what was going to happen, so those reactions are their real, on the spot gut reactions.
Ridley Scott said once, he prefers the "sensible" option of real craft instead of CGI because when the actors act and interact with CGI and have been put in to a green or interact with things in various ways, they're basically guessing. So, during post production when the film need to be seamlessly edited together it ends up costing more money going back to correct the mistakes/fault than if you had just started using the physical thing/environment in the first place.
I would have been scared shitless if i was one of the actors. I know it's a guy on a costume, but fuck it, he would scare me shitless. Not to mention the nightmares during the filming.
I'm not attacking Badejo...he did a fine job, but the limitations of what the FX team could do with the suit at the time were apparent from the documentary. Focusing on the head/mouth and never showing the full xenomorph walking in an upright position was ingenious. And unlike with Spielberg's shark ("Bruce") in Jaws, it wasn't because of technical glitches or malfunctions that the Alien didn't appear more; Scott intuitively knew that "less is more" with horror. That's why he's a genius.
I mentioned animation because CGI requires animation, where costumes do not - that makes it a factor that adds to the difficulty of CGI and in my opinion makes it harder than acting in a suit. Now with regards to Jurassic park could you please link a source stating what Stop motion was used in it? because all i can find online are sources stating that it (famously) did NOT use any stop motion.
Well, you know, here on earth, caterpillars grow at about the same speed, lol. Just a few days, and they are things the size of your pinky, when a few days ago you could barely even see them.
No problem, just a suggestion ;) Well, if that was the case I wouldn't have any problem with the film, but it is not the case. That's precisely why I encourage you (or whatever is the correct word in english) to read it. There is no influence, it is a direct copy and paste, even in scenes where it would not make sense, like with the mummy head. In fact, Guillermo del Toro was making an adaptation of "At the mountains..." and had to stop when he learnt about Prometheus. I hope he'll continue it.
Her death scene is very haunting, probably the most haunting of the entire film, because you don't see anything, you just are forced to listen. I was a kid when I saw this. #scarredforlife
Please explain where I can find an example of something that's been done and then get another of the same thing that's had the time wasted to be done again in 3D animation.
Watch The Thing 1982. Then watch The prequel and tell me which one looks more vile and organic. In my opinion cgi should only be used when the object in question is to massive or expensive to build like a transformer or a spaceship like the Prometheus ship in Prometheus. Looks superb.Bits in these sorts of movies that could have been pulled off better with CGI but it should NEVER be overused in a horror movie.
The saddest thing is that they were not using CGI in the 2011 The Thing, it looked beautiful and realistic, until the very last moment, then they decided to replace all with CGI and it looks so fake. They really missed a chance, if you have time look it up, they really did an amazing job.
there is apparently a mystery about the guy playing the alien, bolaji badejo, the fox tried to find him for alien 20th and 30th anniversaries celebrations and he was not found....
Actually, the Movie Idea and the Alien Creature costume design was created in the late 60's but it wasn't until 10 years later that the movie was finally made.....i know that as FACT !
you know i think almost all the shots with the alien extending its tounge could easily have been done by a handheld head with less complicated controls since its so close up
@okuma0kuma Necronom IV isn't xenomorph. It's creature which was basis in Alien's design - in fact, Scott told Giger to create monster based on Necronom.IV. By the way, I was talking about inner mouth, though his head has penis form as well.
No, At the Mountains of Madness was halted due to rating and budget disputes before plot details of Prometheus were beginning to leak out. It's true Del Toro commented on the plot similarites when the film was released, but his film had already been shelved. It's rather irritating when some spout disinformation all over the place. That's the internet for you though.
hope ridley does two more to follow up to the original ' promethius was so far from the 1st alien movie.xenos have to evolve and we need it on lv426. we need to know how the original jockey became a host for the ship to crash on lv426 . plz plz
Nachos XD The SJ was a symbol of an inhuman lovecraftian intelligence from a region so different that it's inhabitants were... just alien to our concepts of morality. A symbol of the oddness of a universe that doesn't care about our beliefs, where humans were ignorant and insignificant; now it's a symbol of humanity and their beliefs (creators) as the center of the universe. I would have liked the new concept if it wasn't just a human god in a Cthulhu suit. Just treason, in my humble oppinion.
If there is anything that comes close to reality, it is fiction. Perhaps the monsters that H.R. Giger saw in his mind were not only restricted to his mind.
It sounds good :) On the other hand, it's a movie not a book, also I like that they didn't just made a copy and a poor prequel of alien with facehuggers instead they try to make the alien universe bigger with a lot of questions which is still actual :) so why not? Anyway, Ideas has their own evolution. One came from another so I don't mind if the story was influenced by some good book :) But I understand your opinion. peace. I'll try to grab the book ;)
It was the first jandra that had union space workers that might have been city workers from New York. It was the first honest idea about how people might be able to work in space. The dark overlay was how the employer, Weyland Yutani might want to obtain the find at whatever the cost, and the story that this level corporate greed might be the most dangerous way to treat an organism like the Alien. The wrong kind of organism could wipe out your whole population in a very horrible way.
There was a lot of hard work and craftsmanship put into this film. That's why I love it so much.
Best monster of all time! The Alien is horrifying, interesting, and beautiful to look at. ALIEN remains my favorite movie of all time.
100% AGREE
Definitely. A movie masterpiece.
i totally agree. Theres no other monster like alien...
the best creature in the history of the cinema
I first saw Alien when I was 9 years old, i'm 27 now, and even now I am still completely in awe of the Xenomorph creature. The creature itself is disturbingly beautiful, the way it moves is so graceful for such a large creature.
yes its gracefully deadly... a good mixture
Please, someone, hit my head so I can forget about Prometheus forever and enjoy this film again.
I love how Ridley is drinking a beer during the interview
It looked like mineral water
Easy to please you are
Best decision was to take his eyes off ALIEN.
It was so much more sinister!
yes with no eyes and seeing everything...
At least we know how it see
Regardless of how much effort CGI involves at the end of the day it will never be better than practical effects, they are after all, physically real, and you cant get more real looking than that.

thank you Ridley Scott, H. R. Giger & the entire crew for creating such an amazing creature and making such an awesome movie.
One of, if not the most terrifying creature/monster/alien from any movie.
10:51
Alien: "oh hey parker are you ok man?"
Haha! I burst out with laughter hearing Veronica Cartwright tell the story of the KY and "Mother". Hilarious!
one of favorite movies of all-time
He's right, it is scarier if a monster is very close to looking human, but with definite parts that are horrifyingly wrong. This puts the fearsomeness into that which is otherwise very familiar.

By quantum mechanics and the many worlds hypothesis - by creating it, we have ensured that the movie Alien is now alive and out there, somewhere.
Without Giger, the Alien artist, and Goldsmith, the sound track composer, the movie Alien would not have been so successful.
I saw it at the Riverside Drive in in Norman Ok in August 1979. Scared me to death.
The greatest Sci-fi horror ever made. Followed closely by John Carpenter's The Thing. A real shame Scott fucked it up his Prometheus and Covenant.
He fucked up when he removed the cocoon sequence. It should have took place before ripley activated the self destruct.
@The-Wolf-with-no-name thank you I am so glad I am not the only one that considers both Alien (1979) directed by Ridley Scott and The Thing (1982) directed by John Carpenter are the greatest sci-fi horror movies ever created as well:).
@WilliamTheUnkownShoutout total bro 🤛
I will never forget jumping 2 feet in the air when it attacked his face! I was 9 years old in 1979...👍👍👍
The "Alien Quadrilogy" is a 10 (!) DVD set... 4 movies, 4 bonus discs (1 for each movie, and 2 supplemental discs.
Wow, look at the detail put into the Alien mouth, face, the muscles, rare to see that kinda effort today, all cgi. Very cool.
again, thank you for uploading this
Best alien creature ever!
Damn that movie scared the shit out of me years ago. Fantastic movie and fantstic people.
I remeber seeing Alien for the first time and how the creature was like the ultamite boogeyman for me. Seeing how it was created and how it worked is so surreal in my mind ha

Gieger is a legend.

'Where the hell are you from anyway, Giger?'
'Ze upper vest side...?!?'
THE BEST MOVIE EVER
Back in 1978 when this movie was being film and a year before theatre release. It would of been great to know if the director says,"lunch break everyone,be back on set in an hour",and the actor in the "alien" costume says,"I'm going to McDonald's for burgers& fries you guys want anything?"(now, imagine the customers expression at that restaurant & no trailers of the movie on tv yet).
that last bit made me LMao - Mother " I'll do it "
That's the most re-played moment for me in this video, the way Veronica tells that story. I still laugh my ass off at it.
ALIEN is probably the best horror movie of all time!
Ridley is the greatest director of all time!
Unbelieveable. didn't you read the 'making of' book? I'll find you a link. How much sweat do you lose under the hot studio lights when animating your CG beast? It cannot be said enough how ingenious a move it was on Ridley Scott's part to show as little of the full Alien as possible.
The scenes of Bolaji Badejo walking around in the suit really ruin the mystique of the creature.
Ridley Scott smokes a cigar and drinks a bottle of beer while talking on the making of videos. Proper bloke.
The lips on that thing are so scary! The way they slowly move up to reveil the teeth...
Actually, the thought of these creatures evolving naturally in space arround us was way more scary. A universe full of unknown nightmares.
Thank You ! Good CGI isn't noticeable at all.,and It would surprise some of these people how much CGI they simply aren't seeing.
And we LOVE him for it. :D
Thanks for these videos !
Wuah, this is Gigers House? Cool Chair.
What is this documentary from... the Alien Quadrilogy or the blu-ray box set? Just wondering if this is available in HD.
that would be so random! I would have loved to see that!
0:30 Chills in spine.....
Geiger was a real genius!!! Alien was mechanically complicated i see
I have all of these in my "Director's Cut" version of Alien. Wow...cool info
It would have been awesome if they had used the translucent skull dome.
I would have been scared shitless if i was one of the actors.
I know it's a guy on a costume, but fuck it, he would scare me shitless.
Not to mention the nightmares during the filming.
Veronica Cartwright was histerical when they shot the chestburster scene...lol !
10:40 Why use KY Jelly, why not white Caro syrup - - seems cheaper and safer to use
I'm not attacking Badejo...he did a fine job, but the limitations of what the FX team could do with the suit at the time were apparent from the documentary.

And unlike with Spielberg's shark ("Bruce") in Jaws, it wasn't because of technical glitches or malfunctions that the Alien didn't appear more; Scott intuitively knew that "less is more" with horror. That's why he's a genius.
Hollywood producers: "We need something absolutely messed up for our movie... SEND IN THE EUROPEANS!"
Whoa the xenomorph is way scarier without the dome
No problem, just a suggestion ;) Well, if that was the case I wouldn't have any problem with the film, but it is not the case. Love watching these featurettes, I still need to get the Alien Blu-Ray collection though. :\
Watch The Thing 1982.

In the bit where the guy with the camera is killed (he is grabbed by the beast), the Cloverfield monster is clearly seen and it disappoints badly...
Thanks ripley8resurrection for uploading these- I really enjoyed viewing them :-)
lol, they lubed up the Alien's head with lube.
Just curious, what didn't you like about Prometheus? (Besides plotholes, they will be answered in the sequel).
Actually, the Movie Idea and the Alien Creature costume design was created in the late 60's but it wasn't until 10 years later that the movie was finally made.....i know that as FACT !
It's weird, moray eels have the jaw inside the jaw like the xenomorph does.
Up till now I never noticed that the Alien had a human skull inside that dome on the front. Quite spooky to think of it that way now.
you know i think almost all the shots with the alien extending its tounge could easily have been done by a handheld head with less complicated controls since its so close up
They wouldn't be around to dislike if they had been.
@okuma0kuma
Necronom IV isn't xenomorph. It's creature which was basis in Alien's design - in fact, Scott told Giger to create monster based on Necronom.IV. By the way, I was talking about inner mouth, though his head has penis form as well.
C-beams glittering in the dark near the Tannhauser gates? What ?..You've never Been? -Bro -you've got to get out more !
Really amazing movie.
i actually liked both AVP and AVPR,the problem is the Alien not being scary anymore as its been done to death...
No, At the Mountains of Madness was halted due to rating and budget disputes before plot details of Prometheus were beginning to leak out. Veronica. I have a feeling you HAVE seen some pretty big tubes of KY jelly.
Y ou would think the would put the full movie out on youtube since it was the 80s jees!
So the alien "design" came from a guys nightmare that was on crack? haha i just love it :)
04:09 looks like the human alien from alien resurrection guess that was their inspiration ?
Nachos XD The SJ was a symbol of an inhuman lovecraftian intelligence from a region so different that it's inhabitants were... just alien to our concepts of morality. What if, just by coincidence, this thing is ACTUALLY alive out there....somewhere...waiting to be discovered by future human explorers 😐
Stop it! I still occasionally have nightmares about this creature. It's been 41 years since I saw this movie and I'm still freaked.
If there is anything that comes close to reality, it is fiction. Perhaps the monsters that H.R. Giger saw in his mind were not only restricted to his mind.
It is from the Alien Quadrilogy box set.
the alien films were way better, but it was nice to see how the xenomorph alien was created, because that is one thing that has always got me stumped
Isn't Prometheus 1 of 3? You got alot more hell to go through yet before you can start the healing process!
@Vladdyboy thank you very much, now i will also have nightmares about a alien on a sving in the park!
This video is as scary as the movie itself!
CGI looks as good as the person gives the effort to make it look.
It sounds good :) On the other hand, it's a movie not a book, also I like that they didn't just made a copy and a poor prequel of alien with facehuggers instead they try to make the alien universe bigger with a lot of questions which is still actual :) so why not? Rubbing and making it glister~ 10:44

Good morning at all::.someone of you didnt see a Mario Bava, sci.fi. movie of 1965 titled, Terrors in the space?
h.r. gigers vision is terrifying and disturbing
