    Only 6 minutes in and I learned something HUGE for me! Leaning forward and creating that even weight distribution on the feet feels so much more powerful! Can't wait to try this my next squat day.

      ​@@KaptainKerl People don't say it nearly as much anymore, but years ago we would hear it all the time. I believe they even have some videos on this very channel dispelling the "heels" myth.

    everyone is complimenting the first part of the vid, but i think that the 2nd part of the vid where Dri Quinn Henoch talk about bracing is golden. the control/activation of glute max and abdominal are frequently neglected, thats why people usually dont do well in that.

      Stupid! Max Aita is a high-bar ATG olympic squatter, Layne is a low-bar powerlifter. Max uses more of his quads, Layne his posterior chain. They are two different technics. Besides that, there comes personal preferences, leverages, biomechanical differences and a lot more factors that define, wich technic is suitible for every individual.

      squat is a complex thing, im a relative novice just trying to figure out some absolutes, then figure out a style to fit my limb leverages, tall long torso.

      boxerfencer Layne has different anatomy. The squat style he is has is completely dependent on his own body, they explain this exact thing in another squat school episode lol

    Also this video has really hit home with me, I barely ever train Deadlift (I actually do it every now and again to just see if I can do it) and can pull 315 for reps whereas I'm actually deloading at the moment at 90kg on high bar. I'm 6'8 and long ass limbs but still a massive difference and when I think about it, I have this tendency to do the "lift the toe up and hips back" by accident in my squat even though I always think tripod foot and teach people that, I just struggle to feel like my toes are planted properly when I actually go to descend. Definitely gonna try the big toe trick!

    New lifter here.
    Meg mentioned that she didn't really know if she was getting it right with Max's q's and maybe it's because of the strength imbalance. It took me awhile to get the "feel" of the technique until I strengthened my quads and found a decent balance on my feet. That and/or she's so used to relying on her back to get into position to lock out.
    I've been squatting as low as possible (lots of front squats), using Max's information for legs and information from Chris Duffin for bracing, for maybe 4 - 6 months now (included in about a year of trying to find the best possible way to fix the adductor/flexor pain I was having while back squatting), and I can definitely feel my quads as well as the difference. Granted, my 5x5 weight right now just hit 200lbs, I feel no pain, my knees feel more comfortable while squatting, and the weight on the bar has been increasing at a good pace now.

    Any future info on whether you're getting a long femur person in? Be interesting to see a high bar placement squat with a long femur!

      One of their lifters, James, has long femurs. Max recently posted/shared a vid of him on instagram. Might wanna check it out for some ideas I guess. Sure did get some for myself as I too have long femurs.

    around 12:00, the tip max is giving about pushing the hand with the knee. Can this tip be useful for coaching a regular squat ? Or it's mostly for belt squats

    Her grip, balance, bar path, and posture looked good. The only issue she seemed to have was the caving in of her knees during ascent on every rep. The cue, "knees out" would easily correct that.

    Excellent tips especially 6:43-7:22 game changer for me as my conven deadlift is very strong as opposed to my high bar squat and so making my back and quads need to work together when getting out of the hole will be something I can work on. Many thanks to Juggernaut for producing "Squat School" series :)

    paralysis by analysis, her squat form was fine, it suits her short torso/long legged frame, pound very heavy leg presses, i know most powerlifters laugh at the leg press but it works for both the squat and deadlift

    Hey chad, I have a question about your book.
    If I do hypertrophy one month, then strength the next month for example.
    Will the volume accumulated in the strength block, need to be higher than the volume accumulated in hypertrophy?

      No it wouldn't. Improvements in strength are driven by increased intensity which will necessitate lower volume to facilitate recovery.

    You know the cue you gave her about pushing weight/centre of gravity infront of shins, does this apply to any squat style? Still trying to improve my high bar even though I'm ridiculously tall and no doubt built better for low bar, I just want bigger quads and use deadlifts/rows/pulls for posterior chain. I know my hips will sit back as my femurs are my longest asset with the 6'8 height and I can't do anything about them, my ankle flexibility is already really good.

    I like the way they teach how to squat. They actually teach you how to perform a technically correct movement, not just pushing more weight for the sake of loading more plates on the bar. Weightlifting style. I don't care if you're a powerlifter. I think that a high bar, olympic style squat will always be the best choice for training purposes, even if in competition you switch to a low bar, hip dominant movement.

      Olympic style squats are good for ... oly lifters. There are high bar squats. And there are oly squats. Which are ham to calves with upright torso and mandatory heel elevations. Hardly ideal for 90% of the general population.

      For what? They have no need to squat upright. Whenever they back squat it should be to develop as many muscles as possible, not exclude major muscle groups.

      Not true. Max Aita is good at with he's doing but he is a weightlifter. It differs so much from a powerlifting-style that it's impossible to change it just before the competition. HIgh bar squat with elevated shoes is just too quad-dominant and low bar so hip-dominant. if you are going to low bar squat at the platform, you should be training like that. I respect Max Aita as an athlete but he's quite arrogant and has made every ordinary gym guy think, that his style is the only style to squat.

    which excercise should i use to alternate with the squat without going down in intensity and at the same time giving the quads a "stimulative rest day"? or shouldn't i stimulate a big muscle at 5*5 three times a week this hard.

    She's low bar squatting, so she's doing it right - with hip drive. I'm pretty sure that the bar is over the center of her feet, otherwise she would fall over backwards. The low bar squat is hip dominant, not quad dominant. Just ask Rip.

      It's a cue some are taught to activate the posterior chain but the most important thing for me is to fill the torso with air and hold the air to help with tightness through the rep

    Would an intermediate lifter with a conventional DL of 545lb and a 455lbs squat be considered to higher back strength than leg strength or would that be fairly even strength for someone at that training level?

      Nate it's hard to say with only the knowledge of the numbers because someone could be very long armed and well suited to deadlift and skew the fact that they're still strong legged.

    If you haven't got large boxes couldn't you use an ironmind hip squat belt instead of the dipping belt. Just that and a bar could do the same job? I really need more leg strength...

    so, in the absence of a way to really do belt squats due to equipment and/or space limitations, what can one do to get the same effect? would goblet squats work? and what weight loading should we use?

      Goblet squats are ok but still involve the back quite a bit. Leg Press or Hack Squat machine are a good option.

    So. My best squat until now is 245kg/540lb ish. Best deadlift 320kg/705lb. My quads are big compared to the rest but I high bar squat. I have squatted alot more volume over the years than I have deadlifted, but still I have this huge difference.
    So should I just squat more? ;)

      320kg Sumo or Conventional? There can be a caveat to our analysis on leg vs back strength, if someone just has particularly good deadlift leverages compared to squat leverages.

      320kg conventional. I could probably pull 300kg semi sumo( Like coan ) in a few sessions if I practiced it.
      I just want to say also, that I am maxing out next week, and my goals are 260kg squat and 340kg deadlift.
      My deadlift has always been alot stronger than my squat. The first time I pulled 300kg I hadn't really deadlifted heavy for 6 months.
      I am not built like most people though, which I think is important to state. Fairly normal proportions but standing 6'7 tall.

    chad whos the most perfectly technically sound squatter u have ever seen. everythings perfect in their squat and there proportions are perfect for squatting. im assuming its probably an oly lifter. and dont give me some bullshit typical "no ones perfect" answer.

    meg seems like a sweet woman. i would've told her to check out STRONGFIRST by pavel tsatsouline for the ultimate barbell sqauts. there is a tutorial video on youtube also.
