Making my own QRP LiFePO4 Power Pack

  • In this episode, I create a smaller 5.8Ah 75wh 12v LiFePO4 battery for my QRP operation. Now that I understand how these batteries work and how to keep them healthy, why get one with unknown parts and limited output current? This little Frankenstein battery of mine is capable of 100A out, and 10A charging current. Technically, the batteries can handle 150A out, but I'm not starting cars with this small pack, just giving it ample room to run radios and other electronics.
    I have always wanted a simple small battery that can run my QRP rig most of the day, but also tell me how much voltage it was currently reading. I incorporated parts in order to have that all at-a-glance in a nice small package. And it's super light, too! Compared to an old 7Ah sealed-lead-acid battery I had, this one is very easy to carry in a pack and power your 12v devices.
    As shown in the video, I don't recommend soldering, but if you must, be sure to apply separate additional FLUX to your batteries in order for the solder to adhere nicer than is shown in my video!

    Did you try using liquid flux on the batteries to enhance the solder adhering to the terminals?
    Curious if that would have helped.

    That’s an awesome setup. Your soldering skills make mine look professional! You need to use flux! You redeemed yourself when you said power poles though!

      Thanks Mike. I knew I needed flux but didn't have any on hand. Should have stopped right there but I figured I'd try since I was already all prepped and into it. It's a fine performer and I know now what to do with the next battery build.
